service and food-processing sectors are becoming more and more impor-tant. Heavy industry, however, still remains predominant with the major players like the Arcelor Mittal Poland Steelworks, the Przyjaźń coking plant, the Bankowa Steelworks, DAMEL and Stalprofil. These well-known brandsconstitute the driving force of the Dą-browa Górnicza economy. Not only are Dąbrowa Górnicza enterprises ac-tive in traditional sectors of economy, but they also invest in state-of-the-art technologies. They have their own la-boratories where research and develop-ment departments improve the quality of their products making them more modern and environment-friendly.

In the last 10 years,, we have seen the development of construction businesses, glass production, the au-tomotive industry, plastics processing or the electronic industry, and- most recently - the electronics industry. As for the company names - Saint Go-bain, URSA, Hobas, Pronox are a few examples. Due to the city location, Dąbrowa Górnicza is an important logistic center. The nearby Sławków Transshipment Terminal makes it po-ssible to transport goods from Asia to Europe via a direct rail connection.

The Gołonóg Hill, with its height of 335 m above sea level, occupies

the area of 6.45 ha and is situated almost exactly in the middle of the Gołonóg district. Formed of shell lime-stone layers, it constitutes an area of outstanding natural beauty as a whole. Since 1994, by virtue of a resolution of the City Council, the hill has been covered by a special protection.

Medieval village

Gołonóg is the largest district of Dąbrowa Górnicza. It occupied

area of 21 square km populated by 50.000 inhabitants. In the 15th mira-culous century, Jan Długosz wrote in his chronicles: in this village there are 11 peasant cornfields, and two small manor houses, from which tithes are paid to the Bishop of Cracow”. Never-theless, the first settlement in Gołonóg would probably date back to the 12th century. As a matter of fact, the very

name of this settlement has also been changing many times. In historical stu-dies, one can come across such names as Goła Noga (Bare Foot) and Gołono-gi (Bare Feet). Legend has it that the names derive from the fact that the vil-lage used to be surrounded with bogs and in order to get there, people had to take their shoes off and they walked the distance barefoot.

Queen Jadwiga’s violets

The name of the Gołonóg Hill Hill is not connected with the legend

of the mysterious hermit only. Vario-us legends associate it with the pious

Gołonóg Hill

The name and history of this hill is connected with a legend. It says that ages ago in the place where

the church is situated today, there was a cave carved in the rock. A barefoot hermit lived there trying to atone for his sins with prayers and an ascetic life. In folk tales, this mysterious man was supposed to be

the former cruel owner of the Będzin castle who did a lot of harm to his people. Now the huge hill is one of

the most favored destinations in Dąbrowa Górnicza.

queen Jadwiga and the local chapel. As the legend tells it, all prayers in the chapel won God’s special favour. When the queen learned about that she and her servants decided to visit the famous place. At the foot of the hill, she took her footwear off and ba-refoot, with no notice of sharp stones, she went up towards the peak. Walking higher and higher she did not hurt her feet; from the stones on which she trod violets sprang miraculously.

St Anthony’s church

There is a church under the invoca-tion of the birth of the Holy Vir-

gin Mary and St. Anthony on the Go-łonóg Hill. Its history dates backto the 17th century. Polychrome decorations

cover the vaults of the three naves and chapels, whilst the outside walls are decorated with Tuscan pilasters. The present interior decor dates back to the late 19th century. In the vicinity, there is an old graveyard established in 1880. Its shape, the arrangement of footpaths, walls and the gate have not changed since the very beginning. A beautiful avenue lined with chest-nut trees leads from the church to the graveyard. Moreover, in the graveyard, there are ancient maples and chestnut trees whose trunks have grown up to 100 or even 200 cm in the diameter. The church and the graveyard belong to the Roman Catholic parish under the invocation of St Anthony. Since 1951, the Franciscan order has been managing the church. It is possible to reach the Hill on foot or to reach it via ul. Kościelna, which originates from al. Józefa Piłsudskiego (J. Piłsudski avenue).

The desert is located in the eastern part of the Silesian Upland. The

20-square- kilometer- area consists of two parts divided by the valley of the Biała Przemsza River. The smaller,nor-thern part can be described as flat and more monotonous in its character. However, the larger, southern part is covered with numerous sand-dunes.

Walking in the sand...

Błędów is the starting point of the PTTK (Polish Tourist Society)

Desert Tourist Trail (Szlak Pustynny), which is 28.5 km long. The yellow--marked route leads from Mount Ja-łowce all the way to Ryczów. We can admire a panorama of the desert from the viewing terrace located on the Dą-brówka Hill. You can reach it taking the black PTTK Guerrilla Tourist Trail (Szlak Partyzancki) through Skałbania - Chechło - Rodaki. There is also a 3--kilometer- didactic path marked with red. It leads from Rudnica (Klucze) through the Błędów Desert to the Biała Przemsza River valley.

The Błędów Desert origins

Nature itself as well as the human factor contributed to the emer-

gence of Błędów Desert. Its history dates back to 2-3 million years ago when the melting ice left the extensive surface of sand and gravel. The global warming which followed covered these lands with forests. In the 13thcentury, together with the development of me-tallurgy in the present Olkusz area, a regular deforestation started; the wood was then used for steel production pro-cesses. Soon afterwards, the thin layer

of soil yielded to loose sands. All these factors contributed to the reemergence of the desert. Starting from the 19th

The Błędów Desert

Legend has it that ages ago the devil became irritated with people who

dared to excavate silver in the Olkusz mines. As a revenge, he decided to fill it in with sea sand. As he was coming back from the coast laden with a large sack, he accidentally hooked it against the to-

wer of the Błędów church and scattered the entire contents all over the Błędów area.

Now, the area of the 14.5 hectares of the devil’s „sloppy work” lies within administrative borders of Dąbrowa Górnicza and, as a part of the Błędów Desert, it constitutes a real attraction for nature and adventure lovers.

century, the area has been referred to as the Błędów Desert.

Desert life

The existing flora has adapted to difficult natural conditions. The-

refore, the examples of the desert life are not numerous. Among the variety of grass kinds you can admire the gray clubawn grass (corynephorus cane-scens), whose roots may be as long as one kilometer. In spring and summer time, you can enjoy the smell of the potentilla, the thyme, the polytri-chum, the stonecrop and the diantus deltoides (maiden pink) in bloom. Many of them are protected species. There are also various insects living in the sand, such as the hymenoptera, antlions or tiger beetles. The woodlark, the tawny pipit and the nightjar are the proud examples of birds. In the

Biała Przemsza River valley, we can come across the beaver and the elk. The ri-ver is inhabited by the trout, the common minnow and a primaeval ver-tebrate – the brook lamprey.

Wavy lake

No more than several years ago, you could experience the fata

morgana phenomenon of in the de-sert. In the Kosmos magazine from 1924, there is an article by Professor

Kazimierz Piecha with an account of his trip to the desert on 18 May, 1924: “The morning of that summer day was cool, at noon the sun was however quite strong. Right when we reached the middle of a large sandy plain on the western side of the desert, we saw a dark steel-coloured lake surface cove-red with light waves. At the same, time sand dunes and the nearby trees were mirrored in the surface of the wavy lake”.

A military training ground and a film star

During the II World War, the Africa Corps of General Erwin Rommel

experienced the difficult conditions of the Błędów Desert during the-ir training. After the war, these lands became a military training ground for Polish soldiers. In the 1960’s the De-sert “starred” in Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s Faraon (The Pharaoh). NATO troops trained there as a part of international military maneuvers in 1999.

The Błędów Desert:

• is not a desert in the climatic me-aning• the depth of the sand layer of the desert reaches 60 meters• it is the largest area of inland sand dunes (12.5km) in Poland and Central Europe• the best viewing terraces:Czubatka (382 m above sea level) in Klucze and Dąbrówka (355 m above sea level) in Chechło.

Monument with an Italian certificate

The Sztygarka Museum is conta-ined in a 19th century building

designed by Francis Maria Lanci, an architect from Fano. The Italian ar-chitect, who conducted tomb recon-struction works on the Wawel Hill in Cracow, was also connected with Zagłębie Dąbrowskie. He designed the reconstruction of the Będzin castle in the neo-Gothic style as commissio-ned by count Raczyński. In Dąbrowa Górnicza, Francis M. Lanci designed not only the building of the present museum (built 1839-1842) but also the no-longer existing houses of the Bankowa steelworks.

Mining background

The history of the museum buil-ding – the oldest public utility

building in the city - is inseparably connected with industry and mining education. At first, the building heldthe meetings of the Western Mining

District Board of Directors and simul-taneously engineering courses prepa-ring their participants for the hard work of a miner. As late as in 1889, with the tsar’s permission, a school for future foremen and metallurgic ma-sters was opened. It was based in the former building of the Mining Board of Directors and over time it came to be called by its popular name: Sztygar-ka. In the years between the two world wars, the existing building was exten-ded with 3 pavilions, where now The Stanisław Staszic Sztygarka Complex of Vocational Schools is based. In 1927 – 1929 next to Sztygarka, there was a training mine opened for practical ap-prenticeship. The mine is almost 600 metres long and 32 metres deep.

Sztygarka museum

The beginnings of museum tra-ditions in Dąbrowa Górnicza

are linked with geological specimens collected in the Mining School and the

local department of the Polish Tourist Society. In addition to a collection of minerals and fossilized remains of flora and fauna, Sztygarka Museum visitors can becomeacquainted with Zagłębie-specific historical exhibits. of. Moreover, the museum is aproud owner of interesting exhibits brought from overseas expeditions and a genu-ine silver treasure discovered during excavation works in one of Dąbrowa Górnicza districts - Łosień.

People, passions and collec-tions

The city of Dąbrowa Górnicza is proud to be home to people

with noble passions. Hence, the city museum can offer its visitors a uni-que opportunity to meet history and tradition.

Stanisław Bocianowski was a clockmaker and an optician. In his life-time, almost all inhabitants of Dąbro-wa Górnicza came to his service shop. In addition to the fact that he ran the optician’s shop, he was also a music lo-ver, an enthusiast of Fryderyk Chopi-n’s music, a bibliophile and a collector of Zagłębie memorabilia. He founded a private museum in his house. Now, part of his historical collection con-nected with Zagłębie Dąbrowskie can be found in The Sztygarka Museum.

In addition to the opportunity to have an imaginary sentimental walk around the region, the Museum offers more distant expeditions. Grzegorz Kuśpiel – a traveller and speleologist as well as the curator of the Museum, has visited various places including South America. In the travel section there is an exhibition devoted to the ancient

Tiahuanaco culture and native inha-bitants of the Andes – Quechua and Aymara Native Americans . Everyday objects, folk handicraft and unusu-al souvenirs were brought from the expedition: a broken shell of an arma-dillo of the Atacama desert or a llama foetus, which is supposed to protect its holder against demons…

Not only treasure…

The Dąbrowa museum offers a se-lection of permanent exhibitions

divided into many theme sections. The historical exhibitions include: A histo-ry that was written with coal and silver is a story about the industry in Zagłę-bie Dąbrowskie (at this historical and archaeological exhibition you can see

a silver steelworker’s treasure from the 12th century or the works of a French sculptor - August Bartholdi), Zagłębie Citizens’ Contribution to the process of regaining national independence, Adam Piwowar – the first mayor of Dą-browa Górnicza or Dąbrowa Górnicza in the old photographs. Exhibitions of the natural and geological section have been arranged with an exceptional care. We can travel in time to see car-boniferous forest or fossilized remains of the Jurassic sea or to learn about the mysteries of – mammoths, rulers of the Pleistocene tundra. At the exhi-bition devoted to the local tangible culture, you can see regional costumes of Zagłębie dwellers and refresh your knowledge of ancient appliances and tools used by our ancestors.

Open to the visitors all year ro-und, the Museum also holds a number of meetings whose topics encompass journeys, environmental problems in a broad sense, regional history, but also on philosophy, ethnology, archaeology including Mediterranean archaeology, as well as history and Jewish culture.

Did you know that…

• Mammoths were frequent visitors to what is now Zagłębie Dąbrowskie.. The remains of woolly mammoths which are to be seen at the museum of Dąbrowa Górnicza were found in the 1930s in the Brzozowica open-cast pit, as well as during the extraction of sand in Kuźnica Warężyńska (in the 1980s)

• What links Dąbrowa Górnicza with New York? It turns out that the French sculptor, the author of the New York-based Statue of Liberty - August Bartholdi carved the bust of one of French managers of the Banko-wa steelworks, Feliks Verdie. The bust, which could still be seen in front of the works in the middle of the 20th century, can now be admired at the museum of Dąbrowa Górnicza.

• The first mayor of Dąbrowa Górni-cza, Adam Piwowar, was exiled by tsa-rist authorities to Arkhangelsk for his underground socialist activity. There he organized a scientific expedition tothe New Land.

• On 13 July, 2006 on the archaeolo-gical site in Dąbrowa Górnicza – Ło-sień - archaeologists made an unusual discovery… It was a gallon filled withover one thousand one hundred silver coins of denars of Prince Władysław II Wygnaniec (the Exile) and Prince Bolesław IV Kędzierzawy (the Curly) from the 12th century, (the so-called - steelworker’s treasure)?

Palace of Zagłębie Culture - the 50th anniversary

Designed by Zbigniew Rzepecki and built in 1951-1958, the

Dąbrowa-based Palace is one of the best examples of the social realist style in Polish architecture. Its impressive dimensions have already defined its popularity. The volume of the struc-ture amounts to 60,000 m3, whilst the floor surface occupies 4,700 m2, out of which impressive and spacious entrance halls occupy 1900 m2. Next, as many as 699 people can find their seats in the spectacular auditorium with a revolving stage. Its magnifi-

cent, richly-decorated interiors are filled with marble, wooden panelling, hand-painted tiles and impressive mir-rors. In terms of the size, the palace belongs to the largest cultural institu-tions in the country and has also been entered in the register of historical monuments.

Well-known artists

You do not have to go to Cracow or Warsaw to see an interesting

drama performance, to applaud well--known TV artists or to have a good time watching cabaret shows. Such performances, shows, concerts and re-citals are often organized right here in the Palace of Zagłębie Culture. Dąbro-wa Górnicza is a favourite destination for popular entertainment groups from all over Poland. Among others, the Pa-

Yet the Palace is not only a building; it is above all a culture centre which has been operating incessantly since 1958, that is for 50 years now. It owes its good repute mainly to the rich history as well as its personnel’s experience in organizing various events. It is a venue where numerous shows, performances and concerts are being enjoyed by large audiences from Dąbrowa Górnicza and outside.

What is MOPT?

The youth Centre of Creative Work (Młodzieżowy Ośrodek Pracy

Twórczej) is the only educational in-stitution of the after-school education which runs numerous special interests groups and gathers young people and pupils both from the Dąbrowa Gór-nicza region and outside. The youth Centre of Creative Work belongs to the European Association for Leisure Time Institutions of Children and Youth (EAICY). It has a great intellectual and creative base and long-standing experience and it offers opportunities for stimulating young people by orga-nizing their free time in an interesting and creative way.

What is going on here?

The institution pulsates with life, especially in the afternoon.

There is a place at ul. 3 Maja where passers-by are reached by the sounds of rocking blues and a charismatic vo-cal - heard from the MOPT building. Refurnished in 2006, the building is a favourite destination for artists becau-se they know that it is the place where the Muses like to squat down. Someti-mes one of them sings, sometimes she assumes a histrionic pose, sometimes she holds a brush and paints and so-metimes she clicks her heels in mid-le-ap. Apart from the Muses’ favour, what also counts is the fact that the facility offers an ample range of activities in accordance with its guidelines.

Our activities abroad

MOPT participates in interna-tional educational programs,

among others as a partner affiliated with the Socrates Comenius project and a coordinator of international activities in cooperation with the In-dian-Polish Community for Culture (IPCC). It also carries out projects in cooperation with with The T.E.M.A. (Transeuropean Municipality Associa-tion) and partner cities Campulung Moldovenesc (Romania) and Studenka (the Czech Republic). The centre is an organizer of painting open-airs in Ita-ly, winter holidays in Austria and art workshops in the Czech Republic and in Slovakia. Some exhibitions of works

of MOPT children have been organi-zed in France. The MOPT is also an originator and organizer of the Beauty around us International Art Competi-tion, which gained a vast popularity. With so many foreign friends, we ad-opt and follow the best standards, we exchange experiences with our friends and we familiarize ourselves with the individual cultural heritage of each of the countries.

But if you are not too good a swim-mer, you can still feel safe. In the

summer season, all beaches on Pogoria lakes are watched by lifeguards of the WOPR (water voluntary emergency se-rvice). And what if you prefer to admi-re the landscape from the bicycle seat rather than from a towel spread on the beach? You will also choose something interesting from what the Pogoria lakes have to offer... Each of the 4 lakes is surrounded by well-marked tracks and bicycle routes where even the little ones will do just fine.

Rivers and canoes

Flowing waters, i.e. rivers and stre-ams, occupy up to 0.2% of the

total area of the city. The names of the local rivers and streams include: Babia Ława, Biała, Biała Przemsza, Bobrek, Centuria, Czarna Przemsza, Jamki, Po-goria, Rakówka, Strumień Błędowski (the Błędów Stream), Trzebyczka.

One should mention here the

Biała Przemsza River, which is 64 km long, as it runs through the Błędów Desert, and the Pogoria River, which supplies with water all the reservoirs by the same name. Recently, en-thusiasts of canoing proved that the Czarna Przemsza is as good a river for this sport as any other. Organized river raftings from the Przeczyce reservoir to Zielona Park are becoming more and more popular.

Sailing and volleyball

By the lakes, there are numerous sailing and water sports clubs, e.g.

Tramo, Fregata, Hutnik, Jawor, Zefir,

By the watersMazury lakes in Dąbrowa Górnicza – how come?

The set of 4 Pogoria lakes is one of the most interesting and attractive places in Dąbrowa

Górnicza. As for today, this small lake district serves tourist and recreational purposes. Even though all the lakes were created in the same way, each of them is different and offers diffe-rent attractions. Pogoria One will be the best option for fans of longer rest as it offers the

most convenient tourist accommodation facilities. Pogoria Two will cater for the needs of wildlife and angling lovers; Pogoria Three will be the best choice for those who love sailing or windsurfing. In a nutshell, everyone will find here something to please.

The Pogoria Three Yacht Club. These clubs organize sailing practice, courses and camps. Their members participate in cruises and regattas on inland and sea waters. The surrounding area of the lakes is also home to many events. Among other organizers, there is the Centre of Sport and Recreation (CSiR) in Dąbrowa Górnicza. Beach volleyball championships, triathlon, bicycle ra-ces, fishing contest - these are only afew of the numerous events.

Friendly shore

Some people say that Dąbrowa Gór-nicza is thriving on water not on

industry. The existing aqueous cen-tres, 6 sailing and water sports clubs enjoy an ever-growing popularity. This particular hunger for water was appreciated by national organizers of The Wind and Water Fair. In 2005, Dą-browa Górnicza together with Giżycko and Polańczyk became the winner of the first edition of the Friendly Shoreaward.

Underwater expeditions

Divers are regular guests of Pogo-ria III. They usually penetrate

the depths in the neighbourhood of the sailing harbour - from the western side or the so-called poles - from the eastern side. The latter, deepest place of the basin owes its name to the sunk elements of a building construction. Divers drop here to 17 metres while the average depth of the lake amounts to 6 metres. Under the water, they are observed by pikes, eels, perches, grass carp, wels catfish and common roach. All year round, the underwater visibi-lity is one of the best in the country. The presence of the divers under water is indicated by special buoys visible on the surface.

If the weather is not too inviting but you still feel like swimming, we have a solution for you – The Nemo – Water World aqua park offering a complex of swimming pools which will please everyone. You will findmore information in the subsequent sections of this guide.

The name Pogoria refers to...

• the Pogoria River, a left-bank tribu-tary of the Czarna Przemsza River, with springs in the area of the former Katowice steelworks. • a picturesquely situated district of the city incorporated into Dąbrowa Górnicza in 1963.• a set of four reservoir numbered from One to Four with the total sur-face of about 805 ha. • a sailing ship built in 1980 which reached Antarctica and circumnaviga-ted the Cape Horn.

The site where the NEMO - Water World aqua park is placed now,

has a rich history. Through geologi-cal examinations of this area in the 18th century, rich and shallowly laid deposits of hard bituminous coal were found there. Their exploitation was begun in 1785. The REDEN mine of hard bituminous coal was opened. Mi-ning works in the open-cast pit lasted until 1940.

After the war, in 1945 the the post-mine land was reclaimed.

It was decided to fill the excavationarea with slag from the nearby Ban-kowa steelworks. The process of filling lasted untill 1969. Then the land was

afforested.

In the meantime, the place was co-vered with bunkhouses that provi-

ded lodgings for soldiers who worked in the General Zawadzki mine (the former Paryż). After the dissolution of the military unit, by the end of 1990s several municipal institutions and social organizations had their officesthere. The most important and long--lasting tenant of the bunkhouses was the emergency ambulance service of Dąbrowa Górnicza.

At the turn of the year 2000, the bunkhouses were pulled down.

The Błędów Desert can be reached via the Desert Trail, which is mar-

ked with yellow. It is 14 km long. The route runs from Błędów through Klu-cze to Jaroszowiec. We begin the walk

in Błędów, where through the pine forest we can reach the desert in the so-called area of Kozi Róg. This area is characterized by a unique dune land-scape with a big mound of Pleistocene sands. Here, among others, one can see pines which are more than 100 years old, with fantastically curved trunks and boughs. Further on, the route ta-kes us to Klucze, a locality situated al-

the Dąbrowa Górnicza city limits, the trail is approximately 18.5 km long. It starts by the bridge over the Czarna Przemsza River. Then it runs through Zielona Park, it skirts Pogoria Three and leads to the Piekło district. Further on, running along the south shore of Pogoria Two, it crosses the forest that covers the Gołonóg Hill. Next, the tra-il runs through the forest and Podlesie park towards the Katowice-Kraków and the Cieszyn-Warszawa dual car-riageways.

To the Gołonóg Hill

The historical church on the Goło-nóg Hill, the remains of quarries,

the former limekiln, old clay deposit excavations - these are the places to which the trail marked with red will lead us. It is called the Metallurgists’ Trail and is 13 km long. The route lo-oks as follows: the Dąbrowa Górnicza--Gołonóg Railway Station – ul. Laski (Laski street) – Jamki – Mount Bor-dowicz - Strzemieszyce Wielkie – ul. Majewskiego (Majewskiego street) and ul. Narutowicza (Narutowicza street) - the Dąbrowa Górnicza Południowa (Southern) Railway Station – Strze-mieszyce road to Ostrowy– Ostrowy Górnicze – Bory. The name of the trail is connected with the Huta Katowice steelworks, Poland’s biggest economi-cal investment Poland in 1972-1976.

To the Biała Przemsza River

Pine forests, historical churches, unpolluted streams, extensive

panoramas of the Błędów Desert and the Smoleń -Niegowonice Range, pic-turesque bends of the Biała Przemsza River – we will see all these while wandering along the Trail of Zagłębie Switzerland, which is indicated with red. In the 1920s, the banks of the Biała Przemsza River in Okradzionów were a holiday destina-tion for inhabitants of Zagłębie cities.

To Jurassic rocks

The Zamonit Trail marked with yellow will lead us to the medie-

val ruins of the castle in Podzamcze, all the way among rocks, through forests and along lake shores. Its total length amounts to 95 km, calling at Dąbrowa Górnicza Gołonóg – Ząbkowice – Łęka – Niegowonice – Centuria – Podzam-cze - Giebło – Mokrus – Siamoszyce – Poraj. Unusual springs.

The underground spring in Strze-mieszyce Wielkie can produce

even 50 litres of crystal-clear calcium--magnesium water in one second! The spring starts in a block of Triassic lime-stones and dolomites at 290 m above sea level. In case of an emergency, the spring could provide every inhabitant of Dąbrowa Górnicza with 30 litres of water per day. Its exceptional purity could be proved by the species found in the waters such as the trout, the bythinella austriaca snail and others. The Vauclusian springs surrounding area of 1.3 hectare is safeguarded by a protective zone.

Ancient lime trees

There are two small-leaved lime tre-es in Kuźniczka Nowa by the Biała

Przemsza River. They are estimated to be 370 – 390 years old. There are two more, of a similar age, growing in the district of Bugaj at ul. Jałowcowa 15. Among the trees which are numbered among natural monuments, there is also a pedunculate oak, called the Oak of Freedom in ul. Górnicza. There are two beautiful beeches in ul. Podbuczy-ny and a fraxinus excelsior (common ash) in Łosień at ul. Łaskowa.

Fugitives on bogs

The European beaver, the the bro-ok lamprey and the spotted crake

– are three species of animals recorded in the Polish Red Book of Animals. They are all the inhabitants of the so--called Błędów Bogs located along the Biała Przemsza River. A picturesque valley of the unpolluted meandering river and old river beds account for the outstanding conditions for fauna and flora. One can admire there some pro-tected plants like the martagon (Turk’s cap lily), the aconite or the daphne me-zereum. As for the birds, we can come across the corn crake, the common mo-orhen, the hawk, and as regards large animals, even the elk can be seen there. Moreover, in the valley of the Biała Przemsza River, in the Bagna-Laski--Krzykawka site, there are over 50 bird species nesting - among others, the black woodpecker, the little grebe and the crane. An example of a protected plant would be the rhamnus fragula (alder buckthorn); in the grass, we can come across the great crested newt. What is more, there is also a small pack of nutria living there.

Natural advantages of Dą-browa Górnicza

There are over 50 species of protec-ted plants in the Dąbrowa Górni-

cza area; that is even more than in the Białowieża Forest (where only 47 have been found). The euphorbia (cushion spurge) is a proud example of the plant listed in the Polish Red Book of Plants containing a list of the most endange-red species. Dąbrowa Górnicza is the only site in Poland where you can see this rare plant.

Dąbrowa Górnicza Curiosities

Underground springs, ancient trees, rare animals and plants, surprising archaeological discove-

ries constitute only a few examples of curiosities of nature to be found in Dąbrowa Górnicza. Visiting each of these places can be a purpose in itself. It does not take much – just slow down a bit, look around and enjoy the sheer wonders of nature.

Sport in Dąbrowa Górnicza

Dąbrowa Górnicza. One of the most dynamic sports club in Dąbrowa Gór-nicza is the MKS, which stands for the Youth Sports Association. The club comprises volleyball and basketball teams. The supporters of Dąbrowa Górnicza teams can enjoy the spirit of competition during the whole year. Volleyball players came up to their fans’ expectations and, in their debut season, after play-offs they achieved the high 5th place in the Women’s Vol-leyball Extra League. MKS basketball players were very successful as well, winning the 1st place in the 2nd le-ague and in final play-offs, they wereupgraded to the First League of Men’s Basketball. MKS representatives are also champions of Poland, Europe and the world in both Men’s and Women’s Beach Volleyball.

Also both the Dąbrowa Gór-nicza-based MOS (The City Centre of Sports) and CSiR (The Center of Sports and Recreation) comprise the swimming, athletics, triathlon and wrestling sections and take pride in their representatives’ nation-wide achievements.

Dąbrowa Górnicza has its strong representation in martial arts as

well. The activity of the Karate Club commenced in 1986 with the sections of Kyokushin Karate and powerlifting – the Club is very successful in the domestic and international arena. RO-NIN is another example of a successful Karate Club in Dąbrowa Górnicza - the Shotokan Karate style, to be precise.

And last but not least: the Dąbrowa Górnicza Boxing Club (establi-

shed in 2003). The club is the “proud father” of 5 National Champion titles among women. The men represen-tation, however talented, still has to prove its superiority over competitors. SUPER-KICK, the kick-boxing section, is the club’s youngest child. It is led by a kick-boxing World Champion, Ceza-ry Podraza.
