“Wheel driven perpendicular to the vehicle’s longitudinal axis”
- a innovative design by
Ashraf Khan. N & Shanmugam. K,BE Mechanical,
Nehru Institute Of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore.
Using Solid Works
Objective• To Design a Vehicle which facilitates the mechanism
enabling Reverse Parallel Parking.
• To achieve the concept of Green Manufacturing.
• To bring feasibility of handling Vehicle or Car in some complex scenarios.
Objective ExplanationREVERSE PARALLEL PARKING• What is Reverse Parallel parking?
- It is the one of the parking technique which is a vital and a most complex manoeuvre in parking.- It is to park a car within a space of a single-car length when two cars, a Lead car and a Lag car are parked.
• To minimize the complexity of this parking technique this innovative design is created.
• What basic fact permits the mechanism for a vehicle to make a Reverse parallel parking?
Utility of the Design in this Basic Scenario
• So the basic fact to enhance the feasibility of Reverse parallel parking is only by changing the wheels to head in that Path.
• That’s why this innovative Design is been titled “Wheel Driven Perpendicular to the Vehicle’s Longitudinal axis”

Wheels Driven
Design• The design is created using Solid Works2010.
• The vital component used in the design is a Bevel Gear.
• The objective of the design is created along only with the Chassis and a Transmission System for predicting the concept clearly.
• Another important component used in the design is a Rotating Shaft with a Carry shaft

Heading Side wards
Bevel Gear Design• Number of teeth Z = 40• Pitch circle diameter:
D = M x Z = 120mm • Cone distance : R = 67.08mm• Face width : b = 22.36mm• Δ = 63.43o
• Addendum angle:Θa = 2.56o
• Dedendum angle:Θd = 3.07o
Design Calculation for Shaft Diameter• The diameter of the shaft can derived from the torque formula:
• The torque is calculated using Power formula for the given speed and power:
Rotating Shaft + Carry Shaft
• The purpose of these shaft is to change the direction of the wheels.
• The rotating shaft is designed and mated to the chassis by means of a hinge mate so it rotates relative to the chassis surface.
• The carry shaft is connected to a axle fastened with gear, acting freely rotate inside the hollow of it and made to retain inside.
Working
Power Transmission in Normal Position
Power Transmission while moving in side ways
Explanation• The Bevel gear transmit power from the engine at an Angle to
the axle to drive wheels.• The Bevel gear of the wheels axle is driven indirectly from the
driving shaft through another bevel gear which is meshed perpendicular to each other.
• At the time of reverse parallel parking the axle shaft is carried by a carry shaft which is further driven by a rotating shaft and it is made to engage with the driving shaft directly.
• The direction of rotation is obtained accordingly by installing an additional spur gear or any other gears from the differential for driving of wheel in the same direction.
Green Manufacturing!?
• In most of the Cities Car parking has become a major Issue.
• The number of usage of cars are increasing day by day.
• Whether to park in the public road or at the compounds of housing society, the condition is assuming a large or greater dimension of land for parking.
• Thus this system made in the innovative design will help in achieving the concept of Green Manufacturing.
Conclusion• Thus a innovative design is created for facilitating the car
parking especially enabling Reverse Parallel Parking.
• The innovative design also reduces the act of very tough manoeuvre to be performed in parking a car.
• It also prevents the condition of assuming greater dimension of land for car parking and thus the design achieving the concept of green manufacturing
TEST JIG FOR TWO LINKS OF A CHAIN
Problem Definition:
• To apply a Tension Load of 500kg on two end of the Chain Links
• Then a joint are made to deflect at the center joint with a deflection of 20deg which should produce a frequency of 20 cycles per minute
Problem Solution• A two holder with pins and a piston at its one end of its faces
acts in the double acting cylinder placed on both the sides of specimen links to be tested.
• The pins are firmly held by means of a bolt and a clamps.
• A cam driven by means of a motor oscillates the center joint according to the deflection to be made.
• The holder reciprocates in a vice and a cylinder is fixed by means of locking screw.

Advantages
• Simple in construction
• Holder , Cam Driver and Cylinders can be adjusted so many number of links can be tested.
• Equal load on both the sides
