EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

XIFI is the project in FI-PPP responsible for the capacity building part of the programme, i.e. focusing

on the infrastructure element. The goal is to pave the way for the establishment of a common

European market for large-scale trials for Future Internet through the creation of a sustainable pan-

European federation of Future Internet test infrastructures.

From the beginning of the project in April 2013, XIFI started to set up a core federation of five nodes

in France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain, provided by XIFI project partners. In April 2014 twelve

further infrastructure nodes will be added to the federation, to increase the XIFI offer and to enlarge

the available capacity in support of Phase 3 projects with increased heterogeneity and a more balanced

geographical distribution in Europe.

In order to facilitate and ease new infrastructures to join the XIFI federation, and for monitoring and

managing the federation and connectivity a number of measures have been planned. A key element is

the development of the FI-Ops tool suite, which among others will ease the deployment, setup, and

operation of FI-WARE instances by Platform Providers.

Specific activities to educate, inform and train the stakeholder groups, as defined by XIFI [2], in how

to effectively use and interact with the XIFI Federation have been planned in the XIFI work package

in charge of Training. Deliverable D7.1 is the XIFI online Community Portal that has been setup. This

is the main online interface from XIFI to external stakeholders that are interested or have already

decided to join the XIFI federation. Adding to the various information that is already available on the

XIFI web, e.g. a Wiki, downloadable XIFI material or summary information on FI-Ops, D7.1 focuses

on enabling concrete training and educating activities. The core element of the portal is the eLearning

platform where the various XIFI training material will be provided. It is accessible from the Training

page of the XIFI web or directly at http://edu.fi-xifi.eu/course/category.php?id=10.

The most important benefit that the eLearning platform offers is that all content and all courses are

available at any time, ready for use as often as the student wants and needs. Students can access the

courses on their own, and in case of questions they can directly contact the teacher via the available

channels (e.g. email, etc.).

Every course can include various types of content. The main content types are:

Web seminar: This format is represented by a list of slides (directly accessible from a menu)

and a synchronized audio track.

Video: This format is particularly useful when a recorded session is already available (e.g.

webinar, presentation).

Document: It is possible to use this format for publishing manuals, guides, or other kind of

documents, e.g. in pdf format.

Web link: A web link can provide a reference to an external (web) resource.

Users may start using the platform, i.e. taking a training course, in guest mode without registration.

However, for using some of the training material formats e.g. participating in a poll, a prior

registration at the platform is necessary. Registration is always required for anybody who wants to

create a new training course or upload training material. In addition to that, these users also need to

send an email to the platform operator to request getting Author status for their registered account.

Creating a training course then is rather straight forward. As a first step, a new course needs to be

created and a number of parameters can be filled to configure the course, e.g. defining the date from

which the course becomes available in the platform or the number of elements the course contains. In

a second step, the course which so far has no content can be filled with material in one of the various

possible formats. Detailed help information is available for each of the parameters that can be filled or

course material formats that can be included.

In conclusion it can be said that the Community Portal that has been setup is a powerful tool that

enables the provision of all required information related to training and community building, and

offers specific functionality to create and provide online training courses which can well support and

complement the other e.g. physical training activities planned by XIFI.

1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Context, objective, scope and structure of this report

XIFI is the project in FI-PPP responsible for the capacity building part of the programme, i.e. focusing

on the infrastructure element. The goal is to pave the way for the establishment of a common

European market for large-scale trials for Future Internet through the creation of a sustainable pan-

European federation of Future Internet test infrastructures. This intends to overcome the current

fragmentation of European infrastructures and FI platforms into isolated test beds that are individually

unable to support large-scale trials, and opening the way for the widespread and replicable exploitation

of FI-PPP services and applications.

From the beginning of the project in April 2013 XIFI started to set up a core federation of five nodes

in France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain, provided by XIFI project partners. This was assisted by

European infrastructure such as GÉANT for their interconnection. In April 2014 twelve further

infrastructure nodes will be added to the federation, to increase the XIFI offer and to enlarge the

available capacity to be able to support as well Phase 3 projects with increased heterogeneity and a

more balanced geographical distribution of infrastructures across Europe. XIFI aims to further evolve

its capacity and service offer so as to support realization of close to the market applications by FI-PPP

and FI developers.

In order to facilitate and ease new infrastructures to join the XIFI federation, and for monitoring and

managing the federation and connectivity a number of measures have been planned. A key element is

the development of the FI-Ops tool suite.

FI-Ops is a collection of tools that ease the deployment, setup, and operation of FI-WARE instances

[1] by Platform Providers. FI-Ops is also the suite of tools used to build and operate the distributed

Cloud linked to FI-LAB. FI-LAB is a live instance of FI-WARE available to developers for free

experimentation with the technology accessible at http://lab.fi-ware.org/

Figure 1 – XIFI federation enabled by FI-Ops

The FI-Ops are in continuous development; new features to improve the operations of FI-Lab nodes

are continuously designed and developed.

Specific activities to educate, inform and train the stakeholder groups in how to effectively use and

interact with the XIFI Federation have been planned in XIFI WP7 “Training”. An amount of training

material is being developed within WP7, based on contributions received from other WPs of the

project, in particular WP1, WP2, WP3, WP4, WP5, WP6 and WP8.

Deliverable D7.1 “XIFI online Community Portal” is the main online interface from XIFI to external

stakeholders that are interested or have already decided to join the XIFI federation. The XIFI online

Community Portal will provide a number of services which are central to community building,

Page 10: D7.1: XIFI Online Community Portal - CORDIS...Grant Agreement No.: 604590 Instrument: Large scale integrating project (IP) Call Identifier: FP7-2012-ICT-FI eXperimental Infrastructures

seamlessly integrated into the project web. Adding to the various information that is already available

on the XIFI web, e.g. a Wiki, downloadable XIFI material or summary information on FI-Ops, D7.1

focuses on enabling concrete training and educating activities. The core element is an eLearning

platform where the various XIFI training material will be provided. It is accessible from the Training

page of the XIFI web or directly at http://edu.fi-xifi.eu/course/category.php?id=10.

D7.1 is primarily not a report but the actual Community Portal (Deliverable nature “Other”). This

Deliverable document focuses on the created eLearning platform. Section 2 of the document intends to

give a short overview of the structure and capabilities of the platform. In addition, Section 3 provides a

brief tutorial on how to use the platform, i.e. how to register, how to create new courses but also how

to “consume” course material. Section 4 finally provides some conclusions and outlook for future

work.

1.2 Intended audience and reading suggestions

The Deliverable is intended primarily for all external stakeholders interested in joining the XIFI

Federation. This does include Content Consumers, as e.g. Developers, Infrastructure Owners and

Operators, but of course also those creating the content first – partners in the XIFI consortium. A

detailed overview of the identified external stakeholders is given in [2].

The eLearning platform will host the various training material to be provided that should facilitate and

ease understanding of what is necessary in order to connect nodes to the XIFI federation and to install

the necessary software components in a fast and correct manner.

The Deliverable, and in particular this document is also intended for giving a tutorial on how to create

training courses and how to upload the related material to the platform. This is mainly targeting at the

XIFI WP7 participants and anybody else who plans to create training courses on the platform.

All readers are recommended to read Section 2 of the document which gives a short overview of the

eLearning Platform and its capabilities. The tutorial in Section 3 provides information to both

producers and consumers of learning content and the reader is suggested to study the respective

sections of interest.

2 STRUCTURE AND CAPABILITIES OF THE E-LEARNING

PLATFORM

The XIFI eLearning Platform is one of the main channels for providing training to XIFI users (e.g.

infrastructure owners and operators). This platform takes advantage of the experience of running the

FI-WARE eLearning Platform.

The platform is linked from the XIFI public web, from the Training subpage, and can also be directly

accessed at http://edu.fi-xifi.eu/course/category.php?id=10. Technically it is built with Moodle v2.4.3

[4]. The configuration of the “Available Courses” section was tailored to the needs and training

courses categories of the XIFI project. All courses are publicly available to anyone, i.e. no registration

is required. A specific role for creating and managing courses within a category was created (Author

role) and is assigned to all partners of the project that request it.

2.1 Main Benefits

The most important benefit obtained from the adoption of this platform, is how the contents are

delivered to the users. All courses are available at any time and as often as the user wants. It's no more

needed to set up a specific date time for teacher and students (synchronous delivery of the course).

Students can access the courses on their own, and in case of questions they can contact directly the

teacher through the available channels (e.g. forum, mail).

2.2 Available Content Types

Every course entry can include the publication of different types of contents. The most interesting ones

are:

Web seminar: This format is represented by a list of slides (directly accessible from a menu)

and a synchronized audio track.

Video: This format is particularly useful when a recorded session is already available (e.g.

webinar, presentation);

Document: It's possible to use this format for publishing manuals, guides, how-tos or other

kind of document;

Web link: Use this type of content to provide a reference to an external (web) resource.

More information on how to create and publish a course is given in Section 3.

3 BRIEF TUTORIAL ON HOW TO USE THE E-LEARNING

PLATFORM

3.1 Uploading of material and configuration

This section describes the steps for publishing a course on the XIFI eLearning platform at http://edu.fi-

xifi.eu/course/category.php?id=10. The content of this section is based on the FI-WARE eLearning

Platform documentation [3].

A user account registration is a prerequisite for the activities described below. A description on how to

register is given in section 3.2.1.

3.1.1 Creating a new course and configure course settings

Users can create a new course or upload content to an already created course. The user must ‘login’ as

shown in Figure 2. Please note that registered users have to make a request to obtain "Author" rights,

in order to be able to create a new course and to upload material. To have your profile upgraded from

plain "User" to "Author", you have to send an email to [email protected]. The mail should specify

the category or course for which you request to become an author.

Figure 2 - Login

Once you are logged-in to the platform with “Author” rights, you can create a new eLearning course

by selecting the menu item "Available Courses" on the top-menu of the home page, as shown in

Figure 3.

Figure 3 - Select Available Courses

Select the course category for which you want to create the course among those listed in the page, as

shown as example in Figure 4. Please note that the platform shows and allows to access all course

categories, but editing features are available only for those categories for which you are an "Author".

Figure 4 - Select Course Category

Once the desired category is selected, start the editing process by clicking on the menu item "Turn

editing on" the "Settings" menu, as shown in Figure 5.

Figure 5 - Turn Editing On

Click the "Add a new course" button in the same page as illustrated in Figure 6.

Figure 6 - Add a New Course

The platform will present you with a form where you have to enter all required information for the

course settings to create the new course (mandatory fields are marked by asterisk). Click on the

question mark icon, near each field, to access the online guide and read more instructions and

information.

Do not change the value in the "Format" field, which is set by default to "Topics format"

typology

Set the value of "Allow guest access" field to "Yes" in order to enable the access to the course

also to non-registered users.

Use the "Availability" field to make the course visible to students, i.e. make it appear in the

list of available courses. Please note that the default value is "not available", i.e. the course is

“hidden”. This should avoid that courses become visible before the course setup was

completed.

Figure 7 illustrates the last two points.

The “Role renaming” setting (see Figure 9) allows the displayed names for roles used in the course to

be changed. Only the displayed name is changed - role permissions are not affected. New role names

will appear on the course participant’s page and elsewhere within the course.

Finally, press the "Save changes" button, to confirm the chosen settings for your course.

Figure 9 - Save Changes

3.1.2 Creating and uploading the course content

Once the course settings are saved, the platform shows a new page listing a number of placeholders for

course content elements, called “Topic”. The number of placeholders that appear can be configured in

the initial form for creating the course. Activities and/or resources can be assigned to each topic, as

explained below.

To start editing the actual course content, click “Turn editing on”.

It's good practice to delete all unused Topic entries. It's possible to add them again if needed, and the

layout of the course will have a better look and feel.

The most relevant icons needed for creating the course content are shown in Table 1 below.

the desired one among those available in the left column list as illustrated in Figure 10.

Important to be noticed:

When you select an activity or a resource, the related description is shown in the section on

the right side of the page

Press the "Add" button to confirm and add the selected activity or resource

For each activity or resource added, the platform will show you a related form to set-up the

required parameters to load that activity.

3.1.3 Example: Uploading a SCORM Package

A SCORM package is a collection of files which are packaged according to an agreed standard for

learning objects. The SCORM activity module enables SCORM or AICC packages to be uploaded as a

zip file and added to a course.

The following example shows how to insert a new activity of type "SCORM package".

Figure 10 - Add SCORM Resource

3.1.4 Example: Uploading a Video

In order to publish a video, select the option "File" under the section "Resources" of the dialog "Add

an activity or resource", as shown in Figure 12. In case of long videos, it's suggested to split them, e.g.

by topic, in parts no longer than 10 minutes each and use the sections of a course to rebuild the entire

sequence. In this way it is also possible to provide direct access to a specific part by reading the list of

sections that compose the course.

4 CONCLUSIONS

Deliverable D7.1 is the XIFI online Community Portal. Adding to the various information that is

already available on the XIFI web, e.g. a Wiki, downloadable XIFI material or summary information

on FI-Ops, D7.1 has focused on enabling concrete training and educating activities, for which an

eLearning platform is the core element.

D7.1 is primarily not a report but the actual training / eLearning platform (Deliverable nature “Other”).

This Deliverable document is complementary. It intends to give a short overview of the structure and

capabilities of the deployed platform, and to provide a brief tutorial on how to use it.

The setup of the Community Portal is thus completed and an overview on how to use the eLearning

platform has been provided.

In conclusion it can be said that the Community Portal that has been setup is a powerful tool that

enables the provision of all required information related to training and community building, and

offers specific functionality to create and provide online training courses which can well support and

complement the other e.g. physical training activities planned by XIFI.

It should be noted that the actual provision of training content in the portal is not part of this

Deliverable. The next steps will now be to prepare the training content and to create the respective

courses. This will be done according to the specific needs of the planned training activities.
