stands out in the district to you?A: “First of all, I think my impression

that it’s a quality district with a lot ofgood things going on – that’s definitelybeen borne out. As I’ve surmised, there’sreally a lot of parental support andpride in the district. … I’m really sens-ing here, that there’s a pride factor – thatit’s at a high level, at least by a largebunch of people.

“I think that the people I have met are

proving very competent. I had a chanceto get out in the buildings some. I’d liketo get there more. The one thing I’venoticed is there’s a lot of initiative to tryto improve the district and improve theopportunities for kids. … The number ofopportunities in the district are proba-bly more than I’ve experienced any-where else.”

Q: Are there any re-occurring sub-jects or things that people want toknow about? That people are con-cerned about?

A: “I think there’s some – well, theyjust kind of want to know what I’mgoing to be doing or what I am doing.Because, I don’t know that a superinten-dent’s role is always really understoodby people.”

Q: So how do you explain that tothem?

A: “Well, it could take about a month(to explain). I think you just go aboutexplaining that you work for the schoolboard to make sure that the school dis-trict is moving forward in the directionsthat have been set. And that they’re kindof managing the different things that goon in the district and make sure kids’needs are being met.

“I think there’s, over time, you figureout what priorities they have. As far as,what are the things on the horizon thathave to be dealt with? And then I see myjob as helping them research optionsand background information and thenmaybe give some advice about optionsthat I see or things that they need tothink about. …

“One of the things that people haveasked me about is … ‘how are we goingto get the next superintendent? Youknow, who’s involved in that?’ That’sreally the board’s decision – the one hir-

ing thing that’s most important forthem.

“But, based on what I’ve listened toand heard so far and what I’m used to, Ithink there will be opportunities forstaff and for the community, that’s par-ents and others, to be able to have someinput to the characteristics that the dis-trict will look for.

…“Then I think

the transitionabout the changein facilities andthose types ofthings are thethings that peo-ple have asked meabout, and if I’maware of what’sgoing to happen.Basically I’m notup to speed aboutthat, so there’s

not a lot of definitive things I can sayabout that, yet.”

…Q: Do you consider your role in

any way to be more of a consultingor kind of, maybe a counseling role, since you bring that experience, andit’s more of a short term period?

A: “I think first and foremost my jobis to be superintendent for eight months.I would characterize that as more thanbeing a consultant … I think what I cando since I’ve been in varying sized dis-tricts, and I’ve been in the superinten-dence for 28 years?

“I’ve probably seen a lot of things anda lot of different ways to do things. Ithink there’s a lot of ways that districts

It’s a Fare for AllBY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Every month, anyone on a tight budg-et can get enough low-priced groceriesto make hearty meals, even during theholidays – a $30 Thanksgiving dinnersuitable for a family, to be specific.

That’s what Fare for All, anEmergency Foodshelf Network pro-gram, provides to hundreds of familiesthroughout the Twin Cities Metro area.

The co-operative, nonprofit food shelfis able to sell the food packages at a 40percent lower price than grocery stores, and people may purchase as many asthey’d like, said Fare for All programdirector Sophia Lenarz-Coy.

Once a month, a truck delivers a vari-ety of low-priced food packages to a spe-cific participating site, where volunteersare ready to offload those packages andsell them to whomever is interested.

No pre-ordering, pre-qualifications orincome requirements are needed to pur-chase, Lenarz-Coy said. It’s like a mobilestorefront.

During Eden Prairie’s Novemberopening, 89 families took advantage ofthe November sale, and there are 19

other sites in the metro that receive aspecial delivery from the food shelf net-work, including New Hope, St. LouisPark, Richfield and Fridley.

In November there were 91 house-holds served in St. Louis Park andanother 118 in Fridley.

“So, we’ve just really seen a lot of peo-ple interested in saving money,” Lenarz-Coy said.

Richfield scheduled its drop-off dayfor Nov. 22, and the emergency foodshelf ’s headquarters in New Hope alsooffers food packages.

The packages usually contain a mixof fruits and vegetables and a variety ofmeats. There are also vegetarian packsand other variations.

In November, a Thanksgiving-orient-ed food pack was thrown into the mix, comprised of a 10-12 pound turkey, pumpkin pie and all the fixings for a hol-iday meal.

In Eden Prairie, the service has cometo town in collaboration with PeopleReaching Out to Other People, and whenthe delivery truck shows up each month, employees from Eaton Corporation vol-unteer to sell the packages at Eden

Prairie United Methodist Church, 15050Scenic Heights Road.

PROP Executive Director AnneHarnack said she encourages everyoneto take advantage of the deal, not justthose who seek PROP assistance.

“More people could certainly benefitfrom this,” Harnack said.

The December Eden Prairie drop-offis scheduled Dec. 6 at the UnitedMethodist Church, Harnack said.

These express sites are different fromthe Emergency Foodshelf Network’sother sites in Minnesota (more than 70)where people must pre-order their mealpacks.

Lenarz-Coy said the express servicecame about because those on a tightbudget can find it hard to spend moneyon food they will not receive until later. And, it was hard to know what theywould want.

The express service was intended totake those hassles away, she said.

After one of the most brutal winters wehave encountered in the past 30 years, wehave all found things that need repair orreplacement on our homes. Many of us haveneeded to put off work being done to ourhomes do to economic hard times. Many ofus also put off projects to save money in casethings got worse. Our home values havegone down which makes it hard to even thinkabout selling our homes.

The reality is that we have to keep ourproperty in good shape to maintain our val-ues. Painting the exterior of our homes is byfar the best value to preserving our wood sur-faces and windows. We can also dramatical-ly change the appearance of the inside of ourhomes by updating colors. Painting wood-work is a very affordable option compared toreplacing old trim around our homes.

In many older homes our windows are stillgood, but the old stain and varnish are notholding up any more. You can save thou-sands of dollars by painting these windowsverses replacing windows. Updating your

basement family room can also be as easy aspainting the paneling.

I’m Paul Moore from Rightway PaintingSolutions. I’ve been in the painting businessfor over 20 years. Being a former ShopTeacher, I have a good background in finish-ing and wood replacement. We do both resi-dential and commercial painting. We dowork for several Town Home Associations,Nursing Homes and Residential Properties.

We give our customers great value bybeing able to not just paint. We replace orrepair wood, repair and reglaze older win-dows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. Onthe inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling.

Attention stay-at-home momsBY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Any mother with young children who isnew to the community, is looking to meetother young parents or merely wants tomix up afternoons with their childrencould find some welcome company at theTwin Cities metro-area chapters of MomsOffering Moms Support Club.

The MOMS Club has more than 2,100chapters internationally, including manyin the metro area and two in Eden Prairie.

Each independently run chapter aimsto bring together stay-at-home motherswho are looking for more connections andactivities than the daily schedule that canbring boredom or even loneliness.

The MOMS groups have monthly com-munity activities, a board meeting, groupmeeting, moms-only outing (without theirchildren), baby-sitting connections and atleast one charitable event every year.

These meetings are not of the typicalnon-profit variety. During the Novemberall-group meeting for the Staring LakeMOMS Club of Eden Prairie, the chap-ter’s five board members brought theirchildren to the home of Jennifer Stevens, where they could commiserate, relax andlet their children play together.

“It’s not very rigid,” said mother KariMitchell. “It’s easy going. … The goal isjust to get people connected.”

How is the MOMS Club different thanjust gathering among fellow friends?

Mitchell said it isn’t much different –it just gives mothers and other caregiversinvited to join an opportunity to connect

in ways they otherwise would not.Mitchell said she’s from Milwaukee,

and when she moved to Eden Prairie shedidn’t know many other people, so theMOMS Club gave her that chance to meetothers and change up her daily schedule.

“We probably wouldn’t have met eachother otherwise,” Mitchell said.

It’s also nice to take part in organizedactivities, such as tours, various outingsor service projects.

And, for a $25 annual membership, most of the 20 Staring Lake memberstake part solely in the planned events, such as a tour of the Eden Prairie Policestation, story times, book club and theother group-oriented happenings. Ifsomeone is interested in joining but can’tafford it, the fee can be waived, Mitchellsaid.

Mitchell Lake MOMS Club is the otherchapter in Eden Prairie. The first EdenPrairie club started in 1999, grew to threechapters and is now down to two, saidBrittney Westin.

Those who live on the east side oftown attend the Staring Lake group andthose on the west side join the MitchellLake group, according to Westin.

Joining is as simple as signing a liabil-ity form, Mitchell said. From there, mothers and caregivers can take part asoften as they wish.

To find a MOMS Club in the area andlearn more, visit momsclub.org. To findout more about the Eden Prairie chapterscan visit freewebs.com/epmomsclubs.

Larson Mitchell, foreground, takes off after showing off toys to her mother Kari Mitchell dur-ing a Nov. 18 Staring Lake chapter MOMS Club meeting. Celebrate thanks and giving this monthOr lessons Ilearned fromkindergarteners

It just might be true that youlearn all you really need toknow in kindergarten.

I recently visited a group ofpreschool and kindergartenstudents to ask them what theyare thankful for this year.

I thought I’d come away withsome silly answers for thisThanksgiving Day column. And I did, but I also learnedthat Thanksgiving is lot moreto young kids than drawinghandprint turkeys, eatingpumpkin pie and givingthanks.

Introducing me to her class,Rita Miller, a teacher at Step ByStep Montessori of Southdalein Edina, said she considersNovember a month of boththanks and giving.

“It’s a good month to thinkabout what we’re thankful forand also to give to those don’thave what we have,” she toldher students.

Rather than ask them what

they are thankful for, maybe Ishould have asked how they aregiving to others. Based on whatSchool Director RachelHagenson told me, they wouldhave had a lot to say.

The 150 students at Step byStep, from infants to kinder-garteners, are currently col-lecting toys for VolunteersEnlisted to Assist People, which serves families inBloomington, Richfield, Edina, and south Minneapolis.Hagenson said the highlight ofthe annual drive is seeing chil-dren so excited to part withtheir presents.

Later this winter, the school, which has seven other metrolocations, will put togetherbirthday bags for the organiza-tion. Twice a month, thekindergartners also visit anearby senior living facility toshare their school lessons andplay games with the residents.

“It’s nice to teach kids aboutgenerosity and giving at thistime of year, and it’s never tooearly to start teaching kids howfortunate we are and that noteveryone is as fortunate,” saidHagenson, who noted that car-ing for the community is animportant part of Montessorieducation.

So this Thanksgiving, I’mtaking a cue from thepreschoolers and kindergarten-ers, who are already well ontheir way to a solid educationin citizenship. While, of course,I am thankful for many things –some of the same things as thestudents below – thisNovember I will focus on giv-ing.

Around your table thisevening, consider asking yourfamily members and friendswhat they are thankful for andhow they are giving too.

And without further ado, here is how the preschool andkindergarten students at Stepby Step Montessori ofSouthdale in Edina answered“What are you thankful for?”

“I’m thankful for cookingwith my mom.” – CarsonWeiler, age 6, of Bloomington

“I’m thankful for my petOso, a pug.” – RajaChinnakotla, 5, of Edina

“I’m thankful for my StarWars movies.” – Parker Hunt, 5,of Minneapolis

“I’m thankful for myfriends.” – Luke Jeschke, 5, ofBloomington

“I’m thankful for my friendstoo.” – Lizzie Jeschke, 5 ofBloomington

“I’m thankful for my family.”– Caden Sosa, 6, of Minneapolis

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hann shouldn’thave delayed grant To the editor:

Imagine your child with can-cer and being denied qualitycare. Imagine a veteran you lovewho served bravely and now istold he or she can’t have thehealth care needed and prom-ised. Our senator, David Hann, single handedly delayedMinnesota from accepting a $25million grant that provides theseservices and more.

Cost savings? Not really. Themoney could go to other states for

their children with cancer andtheir brave veterans. Hann needsto start representing what’s rightand moral for all Minnesotansand stop catering to the radicalconservative agenda of his TeaParty base.

Ross says thanks for thelast four yearsTo the editor:

I would like to extend my sincere

thanks to the citizens of Eden Prairie forgiving me the opportunity to serve as amember of the Eden Prairie School Boardfor the last four years. I am proud of thepositive changes that were made duringmy tenure on the board. Recently theNational Coalition on School Diversity,school-diversity.org, expressed support forthe plan being implemented in EdenPrairie.

While I have enjoyed my time as a

board member, I look forward to servingthe students and families of Eden Prairiein other ways. I will continue to advocatefor the needs of all students, especiallythose who sometimes struggle to be heard.

I trust that the new board will searchfor a new superintendent who is dedicatedto the success of each and every student inEden Prairie.

are successful with things. Not every-body has the same curriculum. Noteverybody offers the same program-ming. There’s a lot of different ways todo that.

“Hopefully some of the things I’veexperienced over 28 years, that as pointscome up here, I’m going to be able to say,‘Okay, I know that here’s another way ofdoing this. This is a different perspec-tive you might want to think about.’ Inlooking at statistic and that type ofthing, I might say, ‘Here’s a different waywe could package this. Here’s anotherway to present this.’

“I think you’ve got a communicationsand community relations person who’salso coming in who’s got some differenceof ideas about what some other peopledo. Whether it’s a fulltime position like[Bob Noyed’s in communications] or myinterim thing, I think that’s one thing Ican do.

“And, I don’t necessarily have to putsomething in place that will help mestay in the job. Because, June 30th I getto go back to doing kind of other thingsI want to do. … Hopefully I can be objec-tive and really helpful for some of thecomprehensive – looking at all of the dif-ferent programming and things goingon here.”

Q: With the new board coming inJanuary, is there any kind of …advice for new board members, ingeneral?

A: “It’s probably the same advice I’vegiven to people for a long period of time, because I’ve worked for a whole lot of

people over the time that I’ve been doingthis and that is … I take everybody com-ing on the board that they really want tomake a contribution to the education ofkids, so that’s my way of looking at it.

“And, we start providing them withinformation right away once they’reelected so that they are get the samethings that board members are. We meetwith them. We try and see what informa-tion they might like to see so they’re upto speed as much as possible, and then Itell them just to try and stay objectiveand look at the big picture and under-stand that they’re probably going tohave to go through a full year to experi-ence all of the different things that go inon in the district.

“Because, whether it’s budget cyclesor staffing cycles or other kinds of plan-ning – decision making – it’s not like youcome in and one month you do that, andthen you do it again the same month, and the next month and the next month.

“There’s this cycle. And, I reallyencourage them to just understand thatthey’ll get through everything, but itjust takes some time. And, listen to otherpeople, but make sure that you stand upand express your own opinions too, andvote your conscience.

“And, if you need more information, just ask, because my job is to make surethat the board can function effectivelyand do what’s best for the children andother members of the community. Sothat’s how I’d approach that.”

…Q: Is there anything specifically

that you are focusing on or areasthat you do want to kind of focus on?

A: “Well, what I’d like to look at is try-

ing to help the district have a compre-hensive view of everything, becausethere’s lots of initiatives here. Reallygood things that I think are making a

difference for kids. “But, sometimes if you have too

many things going on and you don’thave a comprehensive approach, thatcan kind of spread out your resources.

“And, so what’d I’d like to do is be ableto focus on the things that are impor-tant, kind of for long-term planning andget that kind of information available to

the board. “So … that they’re going to have dif-

ferent pieces of information that theycan feel confident about, that they canthen use when making their decision. So,whether that’s, ‘What’s the prospects forstudent enrollment going forward?’ or‘What type of technology things are outthere that we need to look at?’

“How do all those things kind of meshtogether, too? Because you can’t do every-thing. And, you have to set some priorities, and maybe that’s something I can helpwith in the next few months here.”

CITY NOTES

Eden Prairie wins firstin Digital Cities survey

The city of Eden Prairie was award-ed first place in the Center for DigitalGovernment “Digital Cities Survey” inthe population category of 30,000 to74,999.

The 11th annual survey spotlightsthe municipalities that best show howinformation and communication tech-nology are used to enhance public serv-ice. The survey is conducted by theCenter for Digital Government andGovernment Technology magazine andthe top 10 cities are selected in four dif-ferent population categories. Thisyear’s survey focused on resultsachieved by cities, via the use of tech-nology, in operating efficiencies andrealizing strategic objectives despitecurrent fiscal constraints.

Consolidation efforts were a largepart of the reason Eden Prairie tookfirst place in its population category. The city has been knee-deep in applica-tion integration, service customization

and hardware consolidation projects, which have improved service deliverythroughout its operations.

Eden Prairie has also saved approxi-mately 28 percent on its desktop and lap-top computer purchases by switching toa local reseller and buying from a con-tract set up by the state of Minnesota.

Lisa Wu, IT manager, said the projectthe City is most proud of is implement-ing a joint police and fire dispatch sys-tem to better share informationbetween the departments.

Previously, there were four differentsystems. But now combined in one solu-tion, Eden Prairie can share informa-tion with both Hennepin County andthe state of Minnesota to enhance pub-lic services.

Wu said other efforts contributing toEden Prairie’s recognition centered onthe adoption of GIS and GPS technologyto support various city departments, and using local school and retail build-ings to wirelessly connect city sites tohelp avoid the high cost of fiber connec-tivity.

A majority of SouthWest’s $7.6 mil-lion budget in 2010 came from theMotor Vehicle Sales Tax. But, it alsoreceives supplemental funding fromthe state, which declined by more than$600,000 in 2011 compared to 2010.

The transit line is getting as inno-vative as it can, while maintaining itshigh standards for service, Simichsaid.

One of those changes includes driv-

ing empty buses as little as possible. The main example is SouthWest

parking empty buses in downtownMinneapolis after running the morn-ing rush-hour routes to the downtownarea. Rather than having drivers bringempty buses back to SouthWestStation, they leave them at theMetrodome and then hop on a charterbus back to the transit station. Then, the drivers come back to the buses inthe afternoon to run the afternooncommute routes.

“That little thing saved us in excessof $160,000 last year alone,” Simichsaid.

It comes down to doing more withless, Simich said, which unfortunatelyhas included laying off two employeesand not replacing two other employeeswho retired after 17 and 21 years ofservice.

“Balancing the budgets are nevereasy,” he said.

A decline in rider numbers has nothelped the budget, either. As the num-ber of jobs in the metro has declinedso has ridership, Simich said.

Although in October, SouthWestridership was up 5 percent overOctober 2010, Simich said.

“So the trend is trending upward, and that’s what we need to see,” hesaid.

New Chanhassen StationEven though the budget is a little

tougher to balance in the last coupleyears, SouthWest is planning for a bet-ter future – since gas prices areexpected to go up and with it more of areliance on public transportation, especially in the west metro, Simichsaid, a safe area with great schoolsand lots of capacity for future growth.

So, a new Chanhassen station canhelp relieve a full Eden Prairie park-and-ride while also accommodatingfor the anticipated future growth.

Routes into and out of the

Chanhassen station, with a 420-vehiclecapacity, are expected to begin Dec. 12.It will accommodate those living fur-ther west than the Eden PrairieStation, which has been at full capaci-ty, according to Simich.

The station is located north of theSoo Line railroad, west of GreatPlains Boulevard and south of theChanhassen Dinner Theatre.

But SouthWest transit could alsolose riders to the Southwest CorridorLight Rail, which will run fromMinneapolis to Eden Prairie. Its firstrun is expected to take place in 2017.

Simich said SouthWest has juststarted its involvement in the lightrail planning, and once the rail is inplace, the bus line could be looking toserve additional western suburbareas.

The light rail could take a lot ofbusiness from the bus company’sexpress service, Simich said, so it mayadjust by offering more western sub-urb routes – within Eden Prairie, fur-ther west or even up Highway 169.They are considering a lot of ideas atthis point, Simich said.

travel, and new connections at theSouthWest Transit stations could beattractive to area natives who attendcollege in greater Minnesota,Wisconsin and other Midwest institu-tions.

Jefferson can provide service closerto riders’ homes in the southwestmetro, so they don’t have to pick up abus in Minneapolis, said JeffersonVice President of Marketing BonnieBucanan.

The company has had a lot ofrequests to pick up a Jefferson busroute without having to travel toMinneapolis first.

“We hear it constantly. ‘We don’t

want to go to downtown Minneapolis. We want to go to Eden Prairie orChanhassen,’” Bucanan said.

The first route will begin Nov. 30,Bucanan said. It will start at theHawthorne Transportation Center inMinneapolis, make a pick up in EdenPrairie and then head to Glencoe,Willmar and to Sioux Falls, S.D.

Area residents will also be able totake a SouthWest bus to Minneapolis, where they can connect with anyJefferson line running through down-town Minneapolis, according toBucanan.

SouthWest stations expect to startselling Jefferson tickets in January, she said.

SouthWest can generate a littleextra revenue from commission on theJefferson bus tickets it sells at its sta-tions, Simich said.

Eden Prairie seeks seventhstate football title

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS

Eden Prairie moved within one victo-ry of its seventh state football champi-onship and reached the Prep Bowl in con-vincing fashion.

Eden Prairie, ranked fourth in thestate, improved to 11-1 with a 49-7 victoryover ninth-rated Totino-Grace in the stateClass 5A semifinals Nov. 18 at theMetrodome.

The Eagles are back in the Prep Bowlfor the first time since 2009, when they lost16-5 to Cretin-Derham Hall.

Eden Prairie will meet either top-ratedWayzata or Cretin-Derham Hall in thestate title game at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, inthe Metrodome.

Eden Prairie and Cretin-Derham havenot met since the 2009 title game. If EdenPrairie plays Wayzata, the Eagles wouldbe seeking revenge for a 9-0 regular-seasonloss.

“I’m excited for the kids to get thischance to play in the Prep Bowl,” said

Eden Prairie head coach Mike Grant.“This is not the most talented group wehave had here, but the players haveworked as hard as any I have coached.

“It’s been a long year of preparation forthis opportunity. The kids have been work-ing out in the weight room consistentlysince our loss to Brainerd in the statequarterfinals last season.”

Totino-Grace dominated state Class 4Aaction during the past decade but movedup to Class 5A this season. T-G (11-2)learned the hard way how competitive thelarge-school class is.

Eden Prairie broke the game openearly and built a 42-0 halftime lead.

Eden Prairie senior back AndrewLarson scored four times in the first halfon runs of 3, 10, 6 and 4 yards. The elusivehalfback has rushed for more than 1,500yards this season and has gained morethan 4,000 yards during his prep career.

Larson has also scored 50 touchdowns

Happy to be back covering local sports sceneThis sportswriter is glad to be back in

action after being sidelined by hip replace-ment surgery and rehabilitation for thepast five weeks.

I would like to thank all my friends, coaching acquaintances, readers and co-workers for their well wishes and supportduring my medical leave.

The Sun sports staff of John Sherman,Mike Shaughnessy and Nick Clarkdeserves thanks for filling in so well forme during my absence.

And special thanks goes to DavePedersen for his contributions while I wasaway.

And photographer Brian Nelson is tobe commended for supplying top-notchsports photos for the Eden Prairie,Richfield, Bloomington and St. Louis Parksections.

I did my rehab at Bloomington MasonicHome and discovered that many of thefacility’s personnel and patients are long-time readers of Sun Newspapers.

Bloomington resident Rod Lingenfelterwas also at the Bloomington MasonicHome during my stay while rehabbingafter knee surgery. It was fun to reminisce

with Lingenfelter and visit with his sonsSteve and Jim, who starred in basketballat Jefferson.

I reminded Steve, a 6-foot-8 center, about the way he outplayed Kevin McHaleof Hibbing in the state championshipgame in 1976. The Jaguars defeatedHibbing 60-51 in the title game. McHalewent on to star at the University ofMinnesota and then earn hall of famehonors as a member of the Boston Celtics.

Steve Lingenfelter played collegiatelyat Minnesota and South Dakota Statebefore playing pro ball in the NBA andEurope.

Local athletes excelI tried staying up to date with the local

sports scene during my medical leave andhad plenty of time to peruse newspapers

and watch area athletes in televisedaction.

Richfield’s Trevor Olson and hisNorthern Illinois football team hasappeared often on ESPN. The formerSpartan lineman starts at offensive tacklefor the Huskies and the senior is consid-ered a potential high pick in the NFL draftnext spring.

One of the major reasons for theGopher men’s hockey team success thiswinter is the play of freshman forwardKyle Rau of Eden Prairie. Rau led theEagles to the state Class AA championshiplast winter and has been a key scorer forthe No. 1-ranked Gophers this season.

Bloomington’s Jordan Taylor is com-pleting his senior season as the startingpoint guard at the University ofWisconsin. Taylor received all-conferenceand All-American honors as a junior lastseason and should earn more awards dur-ing his final collegiate season.

Congrats to EaglesCongratulations are in order for a pair

of Eden Prairie High School teams. The Eagles’ volleyball team, ranked

sixth for much of the season, won the stateClass 3A title with a hard-fought five-setvictory over Lakeville North in the finalsNov. 12 at Excel Energy Center.

Eden Prairie was the fourth seed in thetournament but defeated No. 1 Blaine andHutchinson before topping LakevilleNorth in the title match.

Head coach Chad Becker did a great jobmolding his team into a championshipsquad. The Eagles finished 27-6 and maybe better next season with several of theirtop players returning.

Eden Prairie’s football program shouldbe saluted for returning to the Prep Bowl. The Eagles are 11-1 and will face unbeatenWayzata in the Class 5A championshipgame Friday, Nov. 25, at the Metrodome.Eden Prairie lost 9-0 to the Trojans duringthe regular season.

Head coach Mike Grant and his assis-tants do a great job building the Eaglesinto an annual state title contender. EdenPrairie will seek its seventh state footballtitle against Wayzata.

Look for the Eagles to pull out a 20-17victory over the Trojans and achieveanother state championship.

in three varsity seasons.Roy McGhee added a 7-yard touchdown

run and Logan Duitsman returned aninterception 65 yards for another first-halfscore. Melvin De-Souza tipped the pass, allowing Duitsman to make the intercep-tion.

Eden Prairie finished its scoring in thethird quarter on a 91-yard pass from quar-terback Grant Shaeffer to wide receiverRashawn Fountain.

Jack Ibach kicked five extra points forEden Prairie. Tight end Zach Hoveycaught a conversion pass from Shaefferafter one touchdown.

Totino-Grace spoiled EP’s shutout bidby scoring on a 3-yard run with five min-utes remaining in the fourth quarter.

“We scored early and kept the pressureon Totino-Grace,” said Grant. “I’m proudof the way our team played and for thegreat job our coaches did in preparing agood game plan.

“I thought our offensive tackles, NickPlager and Dan Urquhart, played theirbest games while starter Nick Davidsonwas out with a broken ankle.”

De-Souza and Anthony King-Foremanled the Eagle defense in tackles with fiveapiece. Drake Michaelson, King-Foremanand Jesse Krull had one sack each.
