Past Commander’s Team Report, Cdr Mark Stacy, AP

Many thanks go to the AO Team for such a great Veterans Day Brunch at the Hannah S. Block Historic USO Center, Wilmington. We must never forget what our Veterans have done and do for us. Thanks to 1/Lt Susan Thompson for securing Commander John Dittmar, Chief of Prevention, USCG Sector North Carolina, as our featured speaker. And, thanks for the great Annual Meeting & Change of Watch!

Unfortunately, this will be my final Foghorn article. I have had a wonderful and varied journey as your Commander over the past year. As I said at the Change of Watch when I was installed, first and fore-most it’s your Squadron, not mine, nor the Executive Committee’s organization. It’s yours. It’s for your needs and enjoyment so we need to answer to that. Throughout the year I wanted to do some different things so we would not repeat the same things we’ve done over past years. This would ap-peal to our younger members, as well as, some of our more adventurous senior members! Our squadron will be 66 years old next year with many great commanders over these years. From the 2016 Change of Watch and beyond, this year’s vision was to Make a Difference within our squadron and our community. Each Bridge Officer established their goals along this vision and emphasized Teamwork. We wanted to be more visible in the Wilmington area with our educational activities, civic service activities, VSCs, and our fun boating and non-boating activities.

While it is the privilege of every Commander to take full credit for any squadron’s successes during his or her tenure, I will not. For without the steady approach of the Bridge and the Executive Commit-tee, all the Committee Chairpersons, and every member who contributed or participated in our clas-ses, meetings, events, VSCs, or boating activities, we would not have had any successes. See, I don’t dictate people. I try to coach people as a Team and see if I can help them accomplish more that they thought they could on their own. Great people make a difference and Teamwork is most im-portant. “Together Everybody Accomplishes More (TEAM)” which challenges the membership to greater heights.

This year the squadron achieved many of the goals we had hoped we would, such as:

More publicity to the community (thanks to the XO Team)

Strived for the highest level of member educational achievement (thanks to the Educa-tion Team)

Provided variety in venues, topics and destinations to increase attendance at meetings and boating activities (thanks to the AO Team)

Provided enhanced communication to the membership (thanks to the Secretary’s Team)

Our financial goal was to keep to our balanced budget, and spend wisely (thanks to the Treasurer)

Made a 100% contribution to the United States Power Squadrons® Educational Fund

As of 15 December, CFS&PS had 217 members. Because of the ABC Classes, we have added 59 new members year-to-date. We added 57 new members last year. (thanks to the ABC & AO Teams)

Our Merit Marks goal was to increase voluntary participation. We had 73 merit marks awarded on this watch which was an 9% increase over 2015 thanks to you

It has been my honor and privilege to serve as your Commander this past year. I have no doubt that my successor will leave the squadron in even better shape than he found it, and I commit myself to being a good outlook crew on his watch. I encourage the rest of you to do the same. Now I will go quietly into the night as Past Commander and help shape the squadron’s future from the Nominating Committee and as an Executive Committee member (with a vote!). Your ship is in good hands and you are heading on course. Our future as a squadron is strong because of you, our talented members who care about boating skills, provide great instruction, like to grow educationally, and love the water. This group has a bright and robust future. Let ’s make the water a better place together! Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Executive Officer’s Team Report, Lt/C Abe Walston, II, S

Where did the year go! Thanksgiving has passed and Christmas is just around the corner. The Executive

Department team had a great year. Let me express my sincere thanks to the committee chairs and their

committees for their hard work and dedication. These included Lt Jim Boyd, P and P/Lt/C Tom Bello, AP Co-

chairs of the Vessel Safety Check Committee (VSC), Lt Ken Badoian, S and Lt Mike Cramer, S, Boat Show

Committee, and Lt Shelby Battle, P, Public Relations Officer. Lt Cramer did double-duty also serving as the

Safety Officer. Lt/C Steve Thompson, S served as our liaison to the US Coast Guard Axillary, P/C Ham Hicks, AP served as the

Radio Technical Officer, and P/C Roger Simmons, SN served as chair of the Cooperative Charting Committee.

Island of Lights Parade, Carolina Beach,

N.C.

The Squadron sponsored an entry in the Island of Lights Christmas Parade at Carolina Beach thanks to the leadership and hard work of 1Lt Ned Rhodes, AP and his helpers Cdr Mark Stacy, AP, Lt Arleen Rhodes, Lt/C Abe Walston, S, Linda LeBer, S, Don Lee, S, and not to leave out Katie, Ned and Arleen`s golden retriever. The Parade was a lot of fun, attended by thousands from surrounding communities, and all attending Squadron members wore their life jackets to publicize boating safety and the Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Our CPR certification class was well attended this year and the training will be offered next year at the same reduced rate. We en-

courage everyone who is not CPR certified to consider taking the class. Bystander CPR doubles the survival rate for out-of-hospital

cardiac arrest; the survival benefit is even greater if the cardiac arrest occurs in the home. Get trained – you may save a life!

It was a very good year for the Squadron with many accomplishments including many new members, informative and enjoyable

meetings, 217 Vessel Safety Checks performed, booths at all the local boat shows, exciting cruises and a very productive year for the

Educational Department including several presentations for children.

A reminder about our upcoming Annual Awards Celebration that will be held on 23 January 2017 at Watermark Marina, please

consider attending. It will be loads of fun!

I am very much looking forward to next year.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Education Officer-Elect’s Report, L/C Ned W. Rhodes, JN

“Come for the Boating Education . . . Stay for the Friends” SM

While I anticipated my upcoming election, things are never “for sure” and a recount may be called for. I have been

elected, so I would like to report on the upcoming education events.

We will start Engine Maintenance on 3 January 2017, led by Lt Josh Roberts, JN. The course will run for eight

weeks, and I encourage anyone who wants to know more about how engines work to sign up. I thought I knew how diesels worked,

but learned a lot of good stuff along the way. Check out the squadron website in the education section to find the link to sign up.

Our next ABC class will take place on Saturday, 18 February 2017 followed by our On-the-Water segment on Sunday, 19 February

2017. Please help us get the word out by telling all your family, friends and that weird person at the end of the dock that we are

putting this class on since it’s a great introduction to boating. Our staff of instructors is impressive, and so is the course. More

information can be found at http://www.capefearboatingcourse.org.

Coming up for the first part of the year will be Sailing in April, Partner-in-Command and Advanced Piloting in May and Seamanship in

June. We are also in the planning stages of a Marine Navigation Systems class starting at the end of February. We intend to pull in

elements of the GPS seminar as well as information on an open source program called OpenCPN (used in Navigation) to create a

course that will be of interest to all who have a GPS receiver on their land or sea vessel.

Finally, I wanted to correct an oversight of mine from the last ABC On-the-Water session. I neglected to include P/C Ham Hicks, JN,

on the list of instructors for the cruise. He led the segment on weather in our local area and did an outstanding job.

I am looking forward to the coming year and to working with our fantastic group of instructors. Lt Meg Morrison, JN will be the

Assistant Education Officer, and I have convinced Lt Arleen Rhodes to continue on as ABC registrar. And we are excited to add four

new instructors to our ranks from the just completed Instructor Development class.

We are off to a good start. Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions on how to get involved.

Administrative Officer’s Team Report, Lt/C Teresa Sorrenti, S

Meetings: The November Veterans Day brunch was a nice change of pace for our monthly meeting. ART Catering from The Purple Onion in Shallotte brought more than enough food. The historical Hannah Block USO Building provided an especially meaningful venue and our USCG speaker provided both thoughts of the military and our local waterways. Special thanks go to 1/Lt Susan Thompson, S for planning this event with the assistance of George and Sharon Oed.

I want to thank all of you for your support over this past year and hope you give the incoming Administrative Officer Lt/C Bob Smith, S the same level of support in 2017. I especially want to thank my Assistant Administrative Officer 1/Lt Thompson, Meetings Chair Lt Francine Roche, S and Membership Chair Lt Bob Smith, S for making this such an easy job! Upcoming Meetings:

Boating Activities: Boating Activities for 2016 are nearly over. After the Hardy Souls cruise with Riverfest, we only have our New Year’s Eve cruise to Bald Head. Upcoming Boating Activities:

Membership Involvement: During the holidays, don’t forget to check out the new on-line cookbook, available on the website’s Members Only section. It is not too late to send in more so please participate! Think about items you may want to share from past competitions (Chili, Soup, Cornbread, and Dessert), Docktails, or meals aboard. Potluck groups are being finalized for the new year. If you want to be included in round two, please contact Sue VanNote at [email protected] Membership: We had over 50 new members in 2016 so we are still short of sponsors. If you are not familiar with the concept of sponsorship, it is basically a mentor to the new member. We will try to pair newbies with sponsors of similar interests/living nearby, or other criteria to improve the experience. We are especially looking for more recent members (those who remember what it was like to be a new member!!). If you are interested, please let Lt Smith know. We are still getting more new members from the September ABC Class, so the need will only increase. Benefits: We hope you noticed the brochures on the benefits of Power Squadron membership at the sign-in table – feel free to take one any time.

Sunshine Committee, Lt Jan Hilbert

This month we sent a Thinking of You card to Ed Cathey as he awaits knee surgery on 15 December. We wish Ed a successful surgery and a speedy recovery. Get well cards were sent to Jerrel Freeman and P/C Alan Smith, both of whom endured hospital stays due to pancreas and heart issues, respectively. We are hoping for good recoveries for both of them.

A Sympathy card was sent to Paula Schubert on the 14 November passing of her husband, Cdr Frank Schubert. For the past three years, he has been the Commander of the Durham Squadron. He will be missed by all who knew him. We send our deepest sympathy to Paula, the family, and the Durham Squadron.

On that same 14 November, I lost my beloved son, Walter. After a long and valiant six year fight, he succumbed to cancer at age 51. As you can imagine, my family and I are devastated. I wish to thank each of you for your many prayers, cards, encouragement, and sympathy during this period. Your kindness and caring thoughts are what have sustained us and will continue to do so as we mourn his loss. Thanks to all of you.

If you know of anyone in need of a card, please phone me at 910-350-0902 or E-mail [email protected] and I will spread the Sunshine.

Hardy Souls Cruise 2016, Lt/C Steve Thompson, S

Another Hardy Souls Cruise has come and gone. It’s called the Hardy Souls cruise because the weather in November is not supposed to be conducive to fair-weather boating. Well, that could or could not be the case this year depending on when you travelled. The cruise was to Wilmington City Docks from 18-21 November. The weather was pleasant for those travelling on Friday, but temperatures plummeted Saturday night with what could be called gale force winds making the journey back to home port for those travelling on Sunday somewhat of an adventure. Those travelling on Monday had somewhat more agreeable weather. The Squadron had another good turn-out for this year’s cruise with Captains and crews from Windansea, Copy Cat, Forever Dreamin’, Adventures, Sea Duck Too, Impulse, Redsky II, Miss Jilly, as well as Ann and Wayne Marquino on their center console, Lt O.B. Battle, P and Lt Shelby Battle, P traveling with Adventures, and Monica and Henry Lovell via land yacht. Festivities started Friday evening with the traditional pizza party on the dock with lots of spirit looking forward to the holidays to come. The evening was not too cold. Saturday started out with breakfast at Dixie Grill. Daytime activities were devoted to browsing the tents at the Wilmington Riverfest, which Wilmington, at my request, kindly rescheduled to coincide with our cruise (actually you may remember a little storm called Matthew that forced the rescheduling). Dinner was held at the Riverboat Landing followed quickly by fireworks over the river, although the evening winds were of such force that it was possible they could have been cancelled. Sunday morning folks awoke to a much colder Wilmington. But that didn’t deter attendance at breakfast on the dock. After bidding farewell to a few Sunday departures, those remaining hopped onboard a carriage for a horse drawn tour of downtown. It was a tight fit for 10 people in an eight-person carriage but the close quarters allowed for an excellent opportunity to huddle together for some extra warmth. (For those that have not taken advantage of this activity you may be interested in knowing that there are eight different routes that can be taken so once is definitely NOT enough for this ride.) After a little more of Riverfest everyone managed to get into Caprice Bistro for dinner where the food fare was its typical excellence. Monday morning was late and breakfast was consumed at The Basics. Later in the morning those crews remaining started the trek back to their home ports, enjoying the warmer weather and knowing that the boating season was quickly coming to an end. Just as children are starting to settle down and dream of the arrival of Saint Nick, captains and crew will be settling down dreaming of the boating season to come.
