DOC-M88-ZXX140 V1 – July 2009 2-5

WARNING: Hot Surfaces Several components (mainly all stepper motors, the X-ray tube, the water pump, cooling elements of motor drivers) of the D2 diffractometer get very hot during standard operation due to power dissipation and could cause severe burns when being touched. Normally, these components can’t be easily ac-cessed as the D2 cover panel is installed. But, during maintenance and repair the hot surfaces could be touched by accident. Be aware that the surface temperature of internal D2 components might exceed 72°C (172°F) when-ever the D2 is switched on. Before touching any of these components turn off the instrument and wait until the components have cooled down sufficiently.

Don’t change the configuration of the motors. Higher motor currents influence not only the motor’s surface temperature but can also damage the motor and the control electronics.

WARNING: Beryllium Do not touch the radiation outlet window of the X-ray tube or the front window of the detector as both windows contain Beryllium. Fumes or the dust from Beryllium and its compounds can be hazardous if inhaled. Corrosion of Beryl-lium may occur during use of the instrument. Beryllium must not be cut, machined or handled in any way. Disposal of Beryllium must comply with all applicable national regulations. Follow all valid national regu-lations for disposal and contact Bruker AXS.

WARNING: Change of the Instrument’s Location The D2 PHASER diffractometer is designed as a transportable analyzing instrument. During transpor-tation avoid mechanical shocks so that the sensitive physical components are not damaged.

Protection Against Radiation

General Remarks The D2 PHASER diffractometer system is an analytical instrument with a powerful X-ray source. Shielding and safety equipment guarantee that the emitted radiation does not exceed 1µSv/h during operation. Bruker AXS is measuring the emitted X-ray radiation of each single D2 PHASER system prior to delivery under worst case conditions.

The D2 PHASER system has been aligned prior to delivery. A new alignment is normally not neces-sary. It is forbidden to override the safety functions in any way.

Only the persons responsible for the D2 PHASER system have the permission to use the safety key. The key must be safely guarded by them to prevent abuse.

DANGER The direct beam of the internal X-ray source is very intensive. Exposure to radiation for even a fraction of a second can cause severe burns. Longer exposure can cause severe or even lethal injury. For this reason it is forbidden to override the safety functions in any way.

WARNING Locally valid regulations for the operation of X-ray analytical systems must be observed strictly!

Page 29: D2 PHASER Manual de Preinstalacion

Safety Guidelines and Technical Specifications D2 PHASER Introductory User Manual

DOC-M88-ZXX140 V1 – July 2009 2-11

DANGER Working with an unprotected D2 PHASER system is dangerous. Alignment work with an unprotected system is forbidden for any person.

DANGER Screws with sealed heads serve as protection against unauthorized removal of safety related compo-nents. It is strictly forbidden for any person to remove parts which are protected by sealed screws. The positions of other safety related parts without sealed screws are controlled by the safety system. Ma-nipulations and modifications of the safety systems are strictly forbidden!

X-ray Safety Circuits The safety system basically consists of two independent safety lines (SL1 and SL2). Both of them have to be closed to enable high-voltage used for X-ray generation. A safety microcontroller monitors all components of the safety circuits and permanently performs plausibility and functional checks. In case of any error which affects the X-ray radiation safety, the X-ray radiation will be switched-off. To get an overview on the safety concept please see the technical document “Safety System Concept, A26-X1-Z50-X26”.

Safety line 1: SL1 uses the enable I/O of the Spellman HV-Generator to enable or disable X-Ray generation. The circuit is only closed if all of the following components in SL1 have the expected settings:

A pull wire in SL1 controls the correct position of the HV-cable. The pull wire can only be con-nected if the HV connector is correctly attached to the X-ray tube.

Users are able to break SL1 with a valid safety key (S101) to avoid that unauthorized person-nel enable HV-generation.

A safety door lock mechanism (S104/K104) in SL1 guarantees that the front door is closed and locked while HV is active.

Two enclosure switches with forcibly guided contacts guarantee that the radiation safety enclo-sure has correct and safe position.

An external interlock in SL1 may be activated as an option. It is not used in default configura-tion of the system.

The so-called safety relay K1 is driven by the safety microcontroller on the safety board. K1 will break SL1 and thus shut down the X-ray generator if one or more safety errors were detected by the safety microcontroller.

Any power supply fault like overvoltage, undercurrent, arc … (as a result of the generators self diagnosis) breaks SL1 using the forcibly guided relay K1.

There are two voltage dividers inside the high-voltage generator (HV-Monitor-A/B). The safety controller checks both of these HV divider values simultaneously and breaks SL1 by relay K1 if one of them indicates overvoltage (>34kV).

Safety line 2 SL2 directly breaks mains supply of the HV generator by forcibly guided relay K2, which opens when-ever “illegal HV” is detected. This may be the case if …:

…HV is still detected, even though Safety Line 1 is disabled. …HV is still detected, even though HV-Generator reports PS-fault. …the signals HV-Monitor-A/B and Xray-On-Monitor don’t fit together.

For additional safety all of the above conditions are checked in parallel by hardware circuits and the safety microcontroller.

X-ray warning displays: There are two internal X-ray warning displays which display the status 'X-ray ON'. The electrical current through the displays is checked by the safety microcontroller which breaks SL1 in case of an error. Additionally an optional external warning display can be connected to the instrument. It is controlled through safety relay K3 and checked by the safety microcontroller in the same way as the internal dis-plays. If it is not attached, a dummy connector simulates a correctly working display. The dummy con-nector is situated inside the radiation safety enclosure.

DANGER

Any manipulation on the safety circuits could cause injury due to X-rays. If a forced or irregular interlock manipulation is detected, your licence for full radiation protection systems will be revoked.

Resetting Safety System after alarm appears The X-ray Safety System is permanently checking the status of all components which are relevant for the X-ray safety. If there are any errors or inconsistencies the safety controller will shut down the X-ray generator immediately. The error which caused the shut-down will be captured and displayed in the Tools (Device-Xray-SafetyBoard History).

It is not possible – even after power down and restarting the instrument - to turn on the X-ray generator again until the safety system has been reset.

DANGER: X-RAY RADIATION The X-Ray safety module may only be reset if the fault which caused the shut-down has been repaired and is no longer present! Contact your Bruker AXS service for help

The reset of the safety module is protected by password. The password itself must be known by per-sonnel being responsible for X-ray safety at the user’s site. The reset procedure is described within the user manual of the D2 PHASER.

Maintenance of the D2 PHASER System

Servicing Precautions To ensure that the D2 PHASER system will operate in a reliable and precise way, the maintenance intervals must be obeyed as recommended by Bruker AXS.

All repairs, adjustments and alignments performed at any components of the D2 PHASER system (incl. host computer) must be carried out strictly in accordance with the approved works practices of the country where the equipment is installed.

The electronic modules contain electrostatically sensitive devices. Before any components or modules are touched, the service person should discharge his self by touching an earthed object.

The physical components must only be connected to the front plugs of the modules provided for them. The block diagram (see supplement folder) provides information. The front plugs of the modules are not protected against the insertion of incorrect components.

WARNING The incorrect connection of modules or components may result in substantial damage in the system. Therefore thoroughly check all such operations before switching on the power supply.

Cleaning the D2 PHASER System For cleaning the enclosure use dry cleaning utensils only. Do not use water or aggressive cleaning agents. The front doors can be cleaned with any standard household-type window detergent.

CAUTION Before starting cleaning you must turn off the power of the complete D2 PHASER system and remove the mains plug from mains power supply.

Maintenance of the D2 PHASER System The components of the D2 PHASER system are mainly maintenance-free. It is recommended to regu-larly check and maintain the following components.

Maintenance of the Internal Cooling Unit Checking the Cooling Fluid Level

WARNING Before you work with the special cooling fluid please read ‘innovatek Protect IP – Application mixture’ from the paper ‘Application methods’. There are many important safety hints, which have to be ob-served.

The level of the cooling fluid inside the internal reservoir must be controlled on the back side of the system visually. Please check the level once a week. It may not be less than the min. mark (b). Level (a) is OK.

If the water level falls below the min. mark the HV generator will be shut off because of high tempera-ture or flow alarm. It is recommended to fill up the cooling fluid as soon as possible.

If the cooling fluid is not filled up in time a cooling fluid alarm will occur. The red status LED will illumi-nate permanently. In this case the HV generator will be forced to 0kV/0mA until the fluid has been re-filled. The system will deny any measurement tasks.
