    ELO 1 Perform Operators PMCS on a 750 CFM Air Compressor and Rock Drill

    (Practical Exercise #1)

    Safety

    Requirements

    Hard hats must be worn at all times. Hearing protection must be worn while vehicleis running. Eye protection, gloves, and proper foot protection must be worn whenoperating tools. Use three points of contact when mounting or dismounting vehicle.Remove all jewelry. Use caution around moving parts.

    Considerations

    Avoid unnecessary stripping and damage to vegetation and waterways. Control dustconditions and limit water erosion by dressing area at the end of each day.     1. Explain to the students:

    a. If more than one student is assigned to the same piece of equipment,students will rotate, performing all practical exercise steps.

    APPENDIX B: PRACTICAL EXERCISES AND SOLUTIONS

    ELO 2 Position a 750 CFM Air Compressor and Rock Drill for Drilling Operations

    (Practical Exercise #2)

    Requirements:

    a. Prepares the air compressor and rock drill for operation.

    b. Performs startup procedures in accordance with the applicable references(s).

    c. Conducts all operational checks in accordance with the applicable reference(s).

    d. Operates the air compressor and rock drill in accordance with the applicable reference(s).

    (1) Turns on the air to the drill.

    (2) Puts the boom into its lowest position and the feed tilt up slightly (ensures that the hydraulichoses do not touch the ground while tramming.)

    (3) Moves the drill straight forward, pushing both the left and the right tram controls forward at thesame time.

    (4) Moves the drill straight backwards, pulling both the left and the right tram controls backward atthe same time.

    (5) Moves the left handle forward and the right handle back to turn the drill toward the right, andmove handles in the opposite direction to turn left.

    (6) Stops the drill from moving, puts both tram controls into the neutral position.

    e. Prepares the drill for drilling operations.

    (1) Places the hydraulic shutoff valve in the horizontal position to activate the hydraulic pump.

    (2) Maneuvers the boom controls to obtain the desired altitude of the boom and feed.

    (a) Feed Tilt

    1) Pulls the handle backward to move the front end of the feed down.

    2) Pushes the handle forward to move the front end of the feed up.

    (b) Boom Lift

    1) Pulls the handle backward to lift the boom.

    2) Pushes the handle forward to lower the boom.

    (c) Feed Swing

    1) Pull the handle backward to swing the front of the feed to the left

    2) Push the handle forward to swing the front of the feed to the right

    (d) Boom Swing

    1) Pull the handle backward to swing the boom to the left

    2) Push the handle forward to swing the boom to the right

    (e) Feed Extension

    1) Pull the handle backward to retract the feed

    2) Push the handle forward to extend the feed

    f. Position the boom and feed

    Spot the drill bit at the desired location of the hole

    (a) Feed Tilt

    Pull the handle backward to move the front end of the feed down

    (b) Boom Lift

    Pull the handle backward to lift the boom

    (c) Push the feed extension handle forward to extend the feed

    (d) Push the drill feed control forward until the stinger presses against the ground or rock

    (e) Continue the above operations until the rock drill is properly positioned in accordance withthe job specifications.

    g. Perform shut down procedures

    APPENDIX B: PRACTICAL EXERCISES AND SOLUTION

    ELO 3 Drill Bore Holes for Explosive Emplacement (Practical Exercise #3)

    Requirements:

    a. Prepare the air compressor and rock drill for operation.

    b. Perform startup procedures in accordance with the applicable references(s).

    c. Conduct all operational checks in accordance with the applicable reference(s).

    d. Drill bore holes for explosive emplacement in accordance with the applicable reference(s).

    (1) Prepare the boom and feed for drilling operations.

    (a) Spot the drill bit at the desired location of the hole.

    (b) Feed tilt

    Pull the handle backward to move the front end of the feeder down.

    (c) Boom lift

    Pull the handle backward to lift the boom.

    (d) Extend the feed by pushing the feed extension handle forward.

    (e) Push the drill feed control forward until the stinger presses against the ground or rocksufficiently to lift the front end of the track two or three inches off the ground.

    (2) Operate the rock drill

    (a) Move the rotation control to the ON position.

    (b) Move the blow control to slow position.

    (c) Advance the bit slowly by pulling the drill feed control lever down until the bit haspenetrated four or five inches.

    (d) Move the drill control and the rotation control to the full ON position.

    (e) Continue drilling until the coupling reaches the centralizer, then place the drill and rotationhandles in the OFF position.

    (f) Place the blow handle in the ON position and move the feed handle to the UP positionuntil the steel and the bit are clear of the hole.

    (g) Continue the above operation in accordance with the job specifications.

    (3) Perform shut down procedures.
