In both the First Reading and the Gospel we hear Scriptural foundations for the Sacrament of Matrimony, the other sacrament of vocation and service. The reading from Genesis offers a deep awareness of what makes us images of God and who we can be for one another. Explained through the symbol of a couple, the story reflects the fact that we become fully human through the communication that builds relationships. Adam and Eve realized they were uniquely made for each other and grew in their likeness to their creator as they learned to love. God’s plan, as described in Genesis, is for a man and woman to join in a permanent union and live as one what we call the Sacrament of Matrimony. In the Gospel, Jesus challenges his questioners to ponder not just Mosaic Law, but also God's purpose in creation. While Jesus' teaching refers specifically to marriage, the more general idea of his response defends the human vocation to love one another. The beginning of this is as the heart of the Domestic Church. Each of our families should strive to be a model of the sanctity of marriage and a source of loving unity as we live God’s plan for our lives. -----The Vocation Ministry Team

Reading I: Gen. 2:18-24 The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him." So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man. So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: "This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called 'woman,' for out of 'her man’ this one has been taken." That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh. Responsorial Psalm: 128:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6 R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. Blessed are you who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways! For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork; blessed shall you be, and favored. R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home; your children like olive plants around your table. R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. The LORD bless you from Zion: may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. May you see your children's children. Peace be upon Israel! R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. Reading II: Brothers and sisters: He "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels,” that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering. He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them “brothers.”

Gospel: Mark 10:2-16 or 10:2-12 The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them. OR: The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. Although the look of our weekly bulletin is basically the same, as of this weekend we are using a new publisher! We look forward to working with LPI and hope those of you who have businesses or other interests in our community will consider advertising in our weekly bulletin. Your support helps to bring the news of our four churches to our many parishioners and others in our surrounding area each week! Remember, our advertising page is included on our website and gets many views! The Parish Office can put you in contact with our advertising representative. Scripture: We are continuing to publish the Sunday readings on page 2. Changes: Each of our four parishes now has a full page of their own! Half the page is designated for the publication of liturgical music that is being used at the parishes each weekend. We hope this will be helpful and enhance your worship. The other half of the page remains designated for news particular to each parish. Deadlines: The deadline to submit items for our bulletin remains the Monday prior to publication by 12:00 noon; keeping in mind that when Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year and Easter roll around, the deadline is moved up a week earlier to accommodate the publisher’s holiday schedule.

We hope you continue to enjoy our weekly bulletin!

We are very excited because Confirmation is this Monday, October 4th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Therese Church. There will be 39 students from the local churches making their Confirmation. Please continue to keep them in your prayers. Come Holy Spirit fill our hearts with your love. Candidates and sponsors should attend practice this Sunday, October 3rd at 6:30 p.m. at St. Therese Church.

A Prayer For Life

God of all life, help us to appreciate the great gift that is human life formed in your image, a reflection of your holiness.

Help us to recognize you in all whom you have created: children not yet born,

families affected by poverty and war, people of different abilities, people from other lands,

and all who are victims of hatred and racism. Help us to bear witness to the dignity

of all whom you have created, regardless of stage of life, or wealth,

or ability, or color, or creed, for every person is fully equal in your loving eyes.

Share with us your holy knowledge that we are all your children,

each bestowed with inherent dignity. May your justice reign forever!

Amen.

St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) left a life of luxury for a life devoted to Christianity after reportedly hearing the voice of God, who commanded him to rebuild the Christian church and live in poverty. He founded the men’s Order of Friars Minor, the women’s Order of St. Clare, the Third Order of St. Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land.

Today, St. Francis of Assisi, known for his deep love of nature and animals, is the patron saint of the environment and animals. Each October, many animals are blessed on his feast day (October 4th). In our Parishes, a Blessing of Pets will be held on the grounds of St. Mary Nativity Parish at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, October 4th. Parishioners from all of our Uniontown Parishes are invited to bring their family pets!

11:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Mass and candle intentions for 2022 are now being accepted. Scheduling forms are available this weekend in the churches and on the website. At this time, all 2022 requests must be made using these forms. You may return the request forms via the collection basket or mail. Requests are noted with date and time they are received and scheduled on a first come, first served basis; therefore, substitutions may be necessary. Because of limited availability, parishioners may schedule 2 Masses per household: 2 weekdays, or 1 weekday and 1 weekend.
