News from the President February 2015

From the President Volunteers needed from A to W The old saying is that in any organization 95% of the work is done by 5% of the members. Our club has 1450 members, but only 2% of our members do all the volunteering and the majority of those are in their 70s. It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with our routine maintenance schedule, much less making any needed improvements to the facility. If you have any skills from Accounting to Welding and would like to help around the Club let us know. Just call the Club number 253-858-9023 and leave a message. We'll make sure it gets to the appropriate person and you will get a call back. Teresa Rebo has updated the Club's web site. Take a look if you haven't already done so. It's better than ever. Every Sunday during this cold, damp season there is a roaring fire in the clubhouse and the big screen has a game on or some other event. Stop by a few minutes for a little warm atmosphere. We have been exploring various ways to upgrade our water system. At present, connecting to city water is looking like to be very good option. The January 10th Continental Shoot was moved to another club do to the fact that we could only supply 5 of the promised 6 traps because of damage to the shoot curtain. Temporary repairs are in the works so that we will be able to hold all special events in the future. Along the line of trap, Thom Halligan is getting very close to securing a grant for five new trap machines. Lead cleanup continues with a walk around the Club with The Department of Ecology and Farallon Consulting (our environmental contractor) looking at and evaluating various testing sites. Harbor Hill Hwy Extension work is on schedule. City work on the environmental process will start this month. The project should be completed by June of 2018. Joel Messing is working hard on transitioning us from our present pencil and paper membership program to an updated computerized one. Finally: If you, a friend, or family member is looking to learn the proper techniques for safe handgun handling and shooting, be sure to check out the classes we offer on our website.

VOLUNTEERS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE!

Since the Gig Harbor Sportsman’s Club (GHSC) was incorporated in 1947, it has been offering shooting sports and related activities at very reasonable costs. Our club’s rich heritage and success has been made possible through the volunteer efforts of our members. Without volunteers the cost of membership and every club activity would be far greater. In fact, without volunteers, many activities would completely cease to exist!

Kitchen Staff – The kitchen is open every Thursday night. It’s also opened for special events and occasions. A Food Handler’s card is required and can easily be obtained online. Contact Bruce Macdonald at [email protected].

Scorekeepers – There’s always a need for scorekeepers for each trapshooting event the club hosts. Whether you’re participating in the event and volunteer as a scorekeeper afterwards – or just volunteer to be scorekeeper, we can use your help. Contact John Cheyney at [email protected].

Archery – The Archery Range is open Wednesdays and Saturdays and is staffed by volunteers. Contact Thom Halligan at 858-9023.

Newsletter Editor – A fun and creative way to help! Contact Rick Gaida at President@sportsmans-
