Program Notes

Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) Stabat Mater (1841) Duration: 60 minutesThe Latin Stabat Mater is a very old poem indeed, though not as old as its subject matter. A 13th century Catholic hymn to the Virgin Mary—possibly by Pope Innocent III, possibly by Jacopone da Todi, a Franciscan friar—its text is complex. It begins as a straightforward observation of Mary standing below her son, Jesus Christ, during the crucifixion. (Indeed, the title of such works really ought to be Stabat Mater Dolorosa—”the sorrowful mother was standing”—rather than the flatly pedestrian Stabat Mater—”the mother was standing”). As the poem progresses, her anguish is described in detail; the narrative subject identifies with her ever more, eventually addressing her and Christ directly, internalizing their suffering. It is powerful; its emphasis on the personal experience of deepest sorrow, as well as the identification with fellow human beings, render it a commonly set text. Versions by Palestrina, Pergolesi, Haydn, Vivaldi, both Scarlattis, Boccherini, and many, many others precede Gioachino Rossini’s 1841 version.

Rossini’s Stabat Mater was, for the most part, wildly popular during the preparations for its first performances, and in some corners equally reviled. A young Richard Wagner, for example, scathingly attacked both the work itself and its fawning public, finding both to be so concerned with fashion that it clouded their aesthetic judgment. Regarding the widely varying differences in the work’s reception, Gustave Chouquet, an early biographer of Rossini’s, wrote: “it must not be forgotten that religion in the South is a very different thing from what it is in the North.”

The text is divided into ten movements, and the style of the music is divided into three types: the choral movements—grand in scale, serious in tone, and heavy in their instrumentation; the movements for vocal soloists—bel-canto operatic in their lightness, shedding only single tears through their smiles; a capella movements—the Renaissance Catholic religious tradition updated.

Page 5: D P symPhoniC Choir Eric Esparza, conductor€¦ · Eric Esparza is the Director of Choral Activities and Vocal Area Coordinator at DePaul University, where he conducts the DePaul

The opening involves all performers: orchestra, chorus, soloists. It is ernst and meditative, rife with musical emblems of the crucifixion: an ascending diminished arpeggio to begin, with chords in the woodwinds that seem like slow stabs; appoggiatura figures that make a cross around the pitch D; listless pizzicatos that imitate the limp, hanging body of Christ. The atmosphere is true sorrow.

The second movement is a tenor aria—a true aria in the operatic sense. Its melody is long and cantabile and memorable. There are hints, in sforzando hits, of the swords piercing Christ’s body, or perhaps of the thunderbolts that Mary feels as a result. While the scherzando accompaniment to the Soprano/Mezzo-Soprano duet (the third movement) might seem inappropriate to the subject of the work, the descending chromatic lines and bookending horn quartet imply a sensitive, if distant, sympathy with the Virgin’s station.

The charactor of the baritone aria, movement four, is more serious. Vigorous dotted rhythms are suggestive: do they represent the Roman military, responsible for the “scourging?” are they vaguely mimetic of the torments to which he was subjected? The music turns triumphant as Jesus gives up his spirit.

The fifth movement is an ingeniously unexpected turn in its instrumentation, or rather, lack thereof: it is for the unaccompanied chorus and baritone soloist. Its text is the beginning the poem’s narrative subject’s attempt to identify with Mary’s suffering: “make me feel the power of sorrow/that I may grieve with you.” The a cappella nature of the movement humanizes the voices; unadorned by instruments, we are forced us to hear the words, and the individuals who sing them. The musical style invokes both Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony.

The quartet for soloists, the sixth movement, returns us to an opera buffa world that we must remind ourselves is actually not incongruous. Within the particulars of this style, there is much to reflect the gravity of the text. Conspicuous chromatisms and modal borrowings accompany text about a “wounded son” and weeping; a dramatic baritone entrance occurs on the passage that reference the crucifixion; a striking key change underscores the phrase “[c]hosen Virgin of virgins”.

The Cavatina, the mezzo-soprano aria, is the slightest of the work, the turbulent middle section clearly if briefly reflecting the phrase “[l]et me be wounded with distress.” The 8th movement is a striking contrast: trumpets and trombones imperiously, growlingly, unmoving, insistently proclaim the terrors of the last judgment, while the timpani and strings are emblematic of the resulting psychological terror (“[l]est I be destroyed by fire”). The movement’s major-mode close, in the military style, takes its cue from the martial implication of the phrase “fortified by the death of Christ”. The ensuing vocal soloists’ quartet, the 9th movement, is tiny in sound by comparison, driving our attention inevitably back to the text, which concerns the mortality of the body. Descending chromatic lines, Baroque emblems of death, haunt the movement, interspersed by hopes for the “glory of paradise”, made up of consonant, pleasant intervals.

The final movement in one way returns to the opening. It involves all people onstage, and it brings back the first movement’s key, G minor, for the first time since. In another way, it is even more traditional than the work’s beginning—it is a gigantic Amen fugue, in the tradition of concluding fugal movement that span from Palestrina to Bach to Handel to Mozart to Beethoven, and that had a long life after Rossini in the works of Verdi, Berlioz, Shostakovich, and Britten. The plurality of the fugue seems to serve as an affirmation of the diversity of human life; here, though, the sorrowful tenor of the text emphasizes the universality of a singularly negative emotion: suffering.
