COMMUNITY RESOURCE GUIDE MISUSE

use.

PHONEBOOK WITHOUT PHONE NUMBERS While technically this publication is more of a guide or directory, we romantically remember the phonebook’s iconic role in analog wayfinding. Current phone numbers and emails are provided for real connections to the skills and talents available in your town.

COORDINATES VS. PAGE NUMBERS This book provides you with an efficient way to locate the resources that meet your needs. While regular page numbers reside at the bottom of each page, this book also provides coordinates. Coordinates contain a letter and a number (e.g. A5) and refer specifically to the resource grid on pages 15-29.

TIME TRAVEL Some ads in this guide refer to Grinnell businesses of the past. You may find yourself jumping from decade to decade as you peruse these resources. If you are traveling in time, make sure not to alter anything too significant in the past.

GRIN CITY COMMUNITY RESOURCE GUIDE

How to be The Best Neighbor

What to do when….

You see a “suspicious” figure Think about why they look “suspicious.” Have they actually done anything alarming? A lot of us are taught that someone can be “suspicious” just for the way they look. Where did you get those messages? Why do these views exist?

Someone on the street looks high or drunk or is acting alarmingly If you are concerned about their safety, ask them if they are okay. Make the best decision you can after you get as much information as you can.Think about the safest possible outcome for the most vulnerable person in the situation.

Your neighbor is playing loud music Pay your neighbor a visit—maybe now, maybe later. Politely ask if they can turn the music down because it’s disturbing your sleep/your dog’s sleep/your kid’s sleep.Talk about how you like good music and how you appreciate that they’re having fun.You want to figure out a way for you both to enjoy your living spaces. You could exchange phone numbers so that next time, they can ask you if you mind the loud mu-sic, and next time their music is too loud, you can ask them to turn it down more.

COOK WITH GAS You see someone sleeping outside Do they seem to be doing okay? Do they seem to be in distress? Ask them if any-thing is wrong, or if there is something you can do to help.

Your Own Secret Code

When the World is Ending and You Desire

1. Define your audience. Why are you creating a code? Are you simply trying to remember things you think you’ll forget? Will the code be shared with a small cadre of colleagues and associates? Are you creating a code you hope will be cracked someday in the future?

2. Create a name for your code. This name itself does not necessarily have to be in code, but it should communicate mystery.

3. Spend some time attempting to crack other codes. Good luck. Expontb wo dkru* nwenp.

4. Once you’ve learned the ins and outs of coding, decoding, cryptography, et al, get to work.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE STOPPED BY POLICE, IMMI-GRATION AGENTS, OR THE FBI · Stay calm. Don’t run. Don’t argue, resist

or obstruct the police, even if you are innocent or police are violating your rights. Keep your hands where police can see them. · Ask if you are free to leave. If the officer

says yes, calmly and silently walk away. If you are under arrest, you have a right to know why. · You have the right to remain silent

and cannot be punished for refusing to answer questions. If you wish to remain silent, tell the officer out loud. In Iowa, there is no law requiring you to give your name if you are asked to identify yourself during a temporary stop. · But police do not always follow the law,

and refusing to give your name may make them suspicious, so use your judg-ment. If you fear that your name may be incriminating, you can claim the right to remain silent, and if you are arrested, this may help you later. Do not give a false or fictitious name. · You do not have to consent to a search

of yourself or your belongings, but police may “pat down” your clothing if they suspect a weapon. You should not physically resist, but you have the right to refuse consent for any further search. · If you agree to an interview, have a law-

yer present. You do not have to answer any questions you feel uncomfortable answering, and can say that you will only answer questions on a specific topic.

QUÉ DEBE HACER SI LA POLICÍA, AGENTES DE INMIGRACIÓN O EL FBI LO DETIENEN · Guarde la calma. No huya. No discuta,

No dé nombres falsos o inventados.

NEIGHBORLY TIPS

Use repetition to suggest movement.

You can hashtag emojis on Instagram.

“Heart” is the most widely used emoji in France.

“Tears of Joy” was the 2015 Oxford English Dictionary’s Word of the Year.

Emoji is one of the world’s fastest evolving language aids. It first emerged in Japan during the 1990s. Lin-guists argue that emoji is more nuanced than words and perform like gestures when reading body lan-guage. Globally, this visual alphabet is used to ac-centuate and emphasize emotional meaning over text communication. Across cultures, meaning can get lost as the charming images take on subversive interpretations. Context is needed to fully appre-ciate these types of usages. In the following charts, we provide an entry into conversing in emoji. We invite and encourage you to experiment, redevelop, push the envelope, and create your own symbolism within your own tribe.

GHOSTING STRATEGIES FOR THE SOCIALLY ANXIOUS

1. Identify all possible exits of any social situation you find yourself in. Front door, back door, cook’s door, helipad, the ex-haust vent for the burger grill. Learn to identify safety glass, which will hinder a window exit.

2. Identify all possible exits of any emo-tional relationships you find yourself in. Significant others, best friends, family, coworkers, doctors, people in the coffee shop, karaoke buddies.Right. Like you do karaoke.

3. Prepare a list of excuses in case an un-spoken exit cannot be attained. Example: Did you leave your oven on?

4. You definitely left your oven on. And your window open. And your toilet running. Also the dish washer. With the wrong kind of soap.

5. You’re really low on battery and need to run back for your phone charger. So you can take photos. Of all these fun times.

6. Maybe if you put on another layer of makeup in the bathroom, it will cake over your fear and discomfort.

7. Yes, you definitely need the bathroom. Why are you taking your things with you? Your coat because it’s cold in there. Your purse for woman things.

8. You have to take this very important phone call. It’s about your grandmother. She just died. It’s true.It has been a month for grandmothers. You’ve somehow lost three already. No, see, your grandfather remarried. Twice. Maybe more. You’ve lost count. Many, many grandmothers

and they’re all very sick. The next could go at any moment.

9. First dates are always a wild gander. Who knew that one human could own that many parakeets? It’s okay. You’ll probably never run into her again in this town of 9,000. She’s a server at that one restaurant. That’s how you met her. No problem, you can live the next 40 years of your life never eating at that restau-rant again. After all, that leaves another 36 whole restaurants in town. If you count all three Casey’s General Stores and the Kum & Go.

10.Cancel that phone conversation with a friend. Because of that thing. So the re-schedule conflicts with another thing. Scheduling phone conversations is ex-hausting work. Your life is very busy. Ignoring their texts will make it easi-er. Especially the one that says, “How come you keep ignoring my texts?” And the one that eventually follows, “For like three months?” The email asking if you’re still alive or changed your number is probably from a spam bot. Instead of texting, post an Instagram picture of a garbage can outside of the bank. They’ll know what it means.

11. Iron, silver, lavender, and certain protec-tive crystals will keep you safe in any ghosting. Make sure to never let the ec-toplasm touch you. Do not speak to the ghost.Turn around and walk away with-out saying a word.

12. I know you’ve got this last part covered.

CELL PHONE ETIQUETTE (as explained by three generations of Grinnellians)

Daughter Mother Grandmother

What do you use your cell phone for?

I use a family member’s phone. Usually the per-son with the most battery. Games and a little social media. I love making vid-eos with Triller.

Calls, texts, emails, Inter-net, social media, games, calendar, organization, din-ner, & flight reservations, Skype, Amazon, movies, music.

Calls, emails, texts, pho-tos, calendar, weather, directions, Facebook, Internet, Netflix, Skype, memos.

Selfie etiqutte

Weird, silly faces are okay with friends, but smile when with family mem-bers. Also, never let your parents be in charge of the phone when taking a selfie. They do not do a good job of hiding the hand that is holding the phone.

NO duck lips, nice smiles, try not to have the arm holding the camera show in the picture.

I seldom take them. If I do, it’s with grandchil-dren and then it’s not a selfie.

Favorite emojis

Unicorn and thumbs up Thumbs up and plain smiley face

Happy emojis, positive, seasonal

Calling and general etiquette

Don’t use your phone at the dinner table, both at home and at a restaurant. I think I have good cell phone etiquette except sometimes I use up all the battery when I borrow a phone.

Don’t be upset when someone doesn’t answer their phone immediate-ly. Don’t use the phone at the dinner table, at restaurants, during a con-versation or when visi-tors are over. Texting or emailing is a nice start to the conversation. Then call if needed, but leave a polite message if they do not answer.

I find it rude when peo-ple are on their phones in a public area. It’s ok to check your phone or messages off and on, but please excuse your-self if you need to reply. Don’t use your phone as an excuse not to in-teract with those di-rectly around you.

Back-ground photo

If I had my own phone, I would choose a picture of my friends or pets.

My husband, children, and me in Chicago Cubs gear at a Chicago Cubs game.

Photos of family mem-bers, especially grand-children!

Other advice or information

I cannot wait until I have my own phone. I think I might get one for Christ-mas as my brother got a cell phone for Christmas when he was 10.

Always have your parents buy the same type and brand of ANY electron-ics that you buy. That way when they constantly ask you to help or have ques-tions, you will know how to help them.

We always get the same cell phones our family members have here in Grinnell. That way they can help us! Our children and grandchildren have taught us 99% of what we know and use on our cell phones.
