APLDWA SPONSORSHIP REPORT 4-9-2011
We have to date: 3 Gold sponsors: Bartlett Tree, Forever lawn and Vibrant Plants 1 Silver Sponsor: Unique Lighting oBronze Sponsors
National produced the file for the signs to be given to sponsors. They have been printed and mailed to the above. A sample is included. Hopefully they will display them. All sponsors have been invited to host one of our meetings. Vibrant plants replied that would like to do this but are working on possible dates. I have noted they don't physically have to provide the space but could do a food table at a meeting decorated with their company information. Bartlett Tree was quite pleased with the turn out to their symposium from our mailing list.
No new sponsors have been added.
Contact information was received for Molbaks Plant Farm, Russel Water gardens, Shop International, Dirt Exchange, Camden Gardens and Architectural Elements and packageswere sent. I am surprised there has been no response from Molbaks. RWG, DE and CG said no. AE is still considering membership vs sponsorship.
The sponsorship committee was Tina and laura Kleppe. On lVIarch 22 laura resigned and noted not having contacted any of the companies on her list. (In November we had divided the prospect list in half.) I will be contacting them shortly. I would like to have someone to work with so please let me know if you come across someone interested in being on the sponsorship committee. Most work is done in the last quarter of the year as we solicit for the following year sponsorship.
It would be most appreciated if people would discusssponsorship with any company they see as a potential sponsor and let me know the contact person and their email. I will send the information and do the follow up. I am wondering if D4 Collective met any prospective sponsors in their Flower Show solicitations but I have not contacted them to ask.
National has a new chapter incentive for directing sponsors their way. I have not received any specific information on this yet but I imagine they will be sending an outline soon.

SYMPOSIUM IDEAS
• 'The Green Room" (Janine)--We will look at the greenest components in the industry for ideas on how to create more sustainable landscapes, bullding
on the idea of a room, which has walls, a floor, and a ceiling. We will look at the greenest materials available to our industry and perhaps have three
sessions covering each of the components. Possiblepanelists include Gwen Vernon (Green Gardening Program)
• Preserving an urban habitat - our role as stewards of our natural community (Kate):
1. Seattle's diminishing tree canopy - how we can be of influence in keeping trees, or replanting
2. Planting for wildlife (Keith Geller? Russell Link?)
3. Water (designing permeable surfaces, channeling water, bog gardens)
4. etc
• Collaboration (Kate)
1. d4 collective - the process of dividing out responsibilities, working as a team
2. garden designer/architect
3. garden designer/landscape architect
4. garden designer/artist
5. collaborating within APLD WA
• To me, a "green" approach would be an in-depth (full day!) look at where our plant palette comes from, how it is grown, how much trucking and other
petroleum products are involved with growing, etc. Who are these growers, anyway? How do they choose the plants they grow? How can we
designers influence these choices? How can we develop a relationship that would allow this? I'm thinking along the lines of Michael Pollan's book, "The
Omnivore's Dilemma." (Barbara) ~ • A panel discussion on setting our prices for services, how to track, how to charge, contracts, etc. (Leanne)--Need to work on the title but I bet there
would be a real draw. We could even think about our symposium being about the business end of our business. How to make a living, doing what you love to do. [From Susie:We would have to be very careful about discussing pricing for any service. That is considered industry price fixing and is illegal!]
IDEAS FOR WORKSHOPS/EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Steel Workshop
From Barbara Lycett: I would not recommend a tour based on just Corten steel- the cost is excessive, and regular hot or cold rolled steel is adequate for most projects. Perhapsa sessionon how to spec steel- strengths, widths, typical lengths, weight (that's a biggy), cutting techniques, etc., would be more helpful in learning how to actually design with it. I took a welding classto get at some of this. A welding instructor or perhaps a sales rep from Everett Steel would be a good choice to cover these topics. I got very little out of the session at JAS Steel a couple of years ago other than "things can be made out of metal!"
Irrigation Workshop From Tina: Jay Nyce would like to offer to put together a seminar, perhaps with Ewing, on Irrigation. Maybe something like understanding irrigation design, or irrigation strategies. Not trying to teach us how to do irrigation design but teaching us how to understand it and what to look at for our clients. Also the impact
issuesof our choices. This idea stems from Alan showing us an adjustable head which he recommended. That head is a dumper = puts out 5.4. Jay mentioned using an MP rotator instead because it puts our 1.1. Huge difference is water use and absorption rates. I am guessing not everyone in the room understood this but I think its important education. What are rain sensors, how do they work, what heads do what, what is water saving vs not, etc.
Stone Workshop From Betsy: Dry stone masonry workshop (hands-on) with Cameron at Marenakos (this is something he would really be interested in teaching, and he could cover dry-laid patio stone, traditional wall styles and techniques, etc.). (Traditionally Marenakos has really rolled out the red carpet in terms of food and facilities, so I'm sure they'd be interested in helping us make it something really special.)
Lighting Workshop From Betsy: How long has it been since we've done a program on landscape lighting, new technologies/options? I'm always up for lighting workshops precisely because it is so technical and the technology seems to change fairly frequently.
Wood in the garden From Betsy: Maybe an overview of various options for salvaged wood, FSC-certified products, recommended treatments. (Janine's comment: If our membership kickoff takes place at Meyer Wells, we can provide an overview of this at that tlme.)
Dog-friendly garden design ("Avoid the "dog days" of summer") From Betsy: I know a designer who used to work for our company who has extensive experience with dogs and might be a great choice for a speaker on this topic.
Panel discussion on setting our prices for services, how to track, how to charge, contracts, etc. Need to work on the title but I bet there would be a real draw. We could even think about our symposium being about the business end of our business. How to make a living, doing what you rove to do. IDEAS FOR CASUAL, "SUMMER" PROGRAMS
Art
• Sculpture walking tour
• From Kate (and Barbara): Georgetown area artist studio tour--especially some of the metal artists designers are collaborating with for their projects
(Kate and Barbara).
• Walking tour of public art in the Northgate neighborhood with Benson Shaw (a follow-up to his presentation at the symposium) (Betsy)
Garden Tours
• Tour of Powell's Wood, Federal Way - It would be nice to do something there sometime - they have a nice garden room rents for 4 hrs at $100 (Kate)
• Bloedel Reserve field trip - tea or box lunch at Octavia's to see her garden (if she was interested) (Kate)
• Visiting the Dunn garden - Betsy has a very nice presentation on her experience with renovating a historical garden (Kate)
• Miller Garden Tour (Kat)
Nursery
• My friend Susan Petersen recently (last fall) bought the old Piriformis nursery in Fremont -- it's now called Urban Earth. She is a real plantswoman (and a
landscape designer who went through the Edmonds program), and I think her nursery could be a great spot for one of our more informal programs. It's
not huge, but on a nice evening it could be a lovely venue for a group of 20 or so people (standing and talking). Let me know if this might be of interest
to fill in any gaps for this year or next. (Betsy)
Movie Night
• lisa and Janine have discussed hosting a showing of "Women in the Dirt: Landscape Architects Shaping Our World" and/or "Dirt; the movie" (this could
also be done in August 2011 if someone wanted to run with it)
GENERAL COMMENTS
• I think it is great anytime we can showcase one of our own members, as we did with Mary Lou at Tieton, Nancy Claire Guth for raingardens, or use them
as a presenter for edu, symposium (Kate)
• Re edu meetings - I like what we have planned for this year. Continue in that vein? (Kate)

APLD WA Program Committee Proposal for use of Constant Contact Presented by: Mary Lou Smith
1. Program informational emails should be sent three times for major events. The first one would be sent one month before the event. A reminder would be sent two weeks before the event. A second reminder would be sent one week before the event.
With other special events such as the January Symposium the initial notification should be two months in advance. The first reminder one month in advance. A second reminder would be sent two weeks before the event. This would be followed by a final reminder one week prior to the event.
2. When an event is open to both members and non-member and space is not limited, emails would be sent out to both groups on the same dates. With events having limited capacity, the first email notice to non-members would be sent one week after the initial notification to members.
3. If there are cost issues related to the expense of the emails, the cost of those specific emails could be assigned to the cost of the specific program being advertised.
