HELLO FROM GERMANY MAY , 2017 The celebration of Easter in our renovated and rededicated Cathedral Basilica involved beautiful ceremonies with wonderful singing by all of our choirs! At the beginning of May, most of the school finds itself in Cologne for the start of our Germany tour. It's always a delight to be travelling with a group of such talented and well mannered young men. The opportunity to sing in magnificent venues and to strengthen ties with our exchange schools is an amazing experience for everyone involved. We'll be posting photos throughout the tour so that the rest of our school community in Toronto can be with us in spirit. Barry White, Principal Happy Easter! Springtime at the Choir School is such a special time of year. We host many events and, as we prepare for our Germany Tour, I look back on the memorable events that took place in April. I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to everyone who contributed to their success. As I reflect on this past Easter season, our choristers provided outstanding music to the St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica, and for this I am very proud of them. I would like to thank all the boys, their families, and the faculty and staff of St. Michael’s Choir School for their tireless effort and dedication to the St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica community. Thank you to the SMCS Alumni Choir and our high school Tenor Bass Choir for their powerful and moving performance at Tenebrae under the direction of Alumni Choir Director Vincent Cheng, SMCS 1999. Monsignor Ronan would be pleased to know that a choir of over a hundred alumni and current students perform it each year. It is a part of his legacy and gift of music to our community. Each spring I look forward to the student piano recitals and I continue to be very impressed by the quality of the boys’ performance and the dedication of our POST staff. Following on last year’s success, we recently hosted Grands Day for families of our grade 3 to 6 students. The event was an overwhelming success. Our guest speaker was Director Emeritus Harry Hodson, SMCS 1960, who was a student, teacher Principal and Director of the School. Grandparents enjoyed hearing his memories of the school’s history and were thrilled by the musical performance of our choristers. Special thanks to everyone who was involved in planning this special day for our younger students’ families. Finally, I would like to acknowledge our Catholic School Parent Council (CSPC) for their donation of the beautiful carved wooden podium that made its debut at this event. As I write this message, I am about to board the plane for Germany. Boys have already donned their tour gear with pride and the level of excitement is palpable on campus. This year, 160 boys will be ambassadors of our school and sacred choral music to our German hosts and audiences. I know they will make us proud. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the parents, faculty, staff, and our students for their dedication and support of this enormous undertaking, which will create life long memories for every participant, adult, and student alike. Happy Easter!

St. Michael’s Choir School Welcomes

Atlantic Boy Choir Visit to Toronto and SMCS

During their recent tour of Ontario, the Atlantic Boy Choir of

Newfoundland visited Toronto and was a guest of St. Michael’s

Choir School. While in Toronto, our Junior Choir under the di-

rection of Ms. Conkey collaborated with them for a concert at

Church of the Redeemer on Wednesday, April 19th. Mr. Handri-

gan, an honourary board member of the Atlantic Boy Choir, was

invited to conduct the

final musical piece of the

concert. The following day, we hosted the Atlantic Boy Choir

students, chaperones, and staff to lunch in our school auditori-

um where everyone enjoyed a catered lunch and many birth-

day cakes for the boys that were celebrating their birthdays.

“We had a wonderful performance and visit with Atlantic

Boys Choir. We don’t often sing with other boy choirs. It was

lovely to make new friends,” said Ms. Conkey.

Choral News

The story of Louis Riel, the Métis leader and founder of Manitoba, is the

subject of the latest Canadian Opera Company production, Louis Riel. We

are very proud of our connection to this production: SMCS alumnus Michael

Colvin’88 stars as Thomas Scott, who was executed on Riel’s orders. On

Monday, April 10, a group of boys along with Mr. Handrigan and Mrs. Licht

attended the Louis Riel dress rehearsal and had the opportunity to speak with

Michael Colvin.

Michael spoke of what a thrill it was to sing with our students and the SMCS Alumni Choir at Massey Hall in 2015. Regarding the staging of Louis Riel, he talked about how there is no ‘bel canto’ singing in this work– which is the opposite of a Puccini opera. He expressed how much fun it is for him to be in the production and how much he enjoyed the whole experience. He was

very warm and kind with the boys and thrilled to see us at the rehearsal. The boys were also proud to know that one of our alumni has achieved great success on the International Opera stage.

Grands Day

This year Grands Day took place on Friday, April 21.

Because some of our students’ grandparents may not

have the opportunity to hear their grandsons sing in a

choral setting, we provide, through this event, an op-

portunity for them to experience a performance by

our Elementary and Junior choirs in a concert setting.

The Day also allows us to say thank you to Grandpar-

ents, so many of whom provide great support to our

boys and their families, in many ways.

This year we invited Director Emeritus Harry Hod-

son, SMCS 1960, to be our grand student guest speaker. Mr. Hodson spoke about his experience as a SMCS

student, teacher, Principal and Director. He recalled what it was like to have been taught by our founder

Monsignor John Edward Ronan, and also his experience of teaching and conducting generations of Choir

Boys at SMCS. The Elementary and Junior Choirs performed beautifully for the audience and impressed

everyone with their professional deportment. Grandparents had the opportunity to sing with their grand-

sons as Junior Choir conductor Ms. Conkey led a sing along to Monsignor Ronan’s composition “Thou Roy-

al Knight from Courts on High”.

Following the concert, our students had the opportunity to have their grandparents take them to lunch.

This year, four boys whose grands were not able to attend had the privilege of having lunch with Mr. Hod-

son, his wife Mrs. Carol Hodson, Mr. White, and Mr. Handrigan. Once again, we would like to thank Mr.

Hodson for coming back to campus and sharing his memories of our school with our community.

Intermediate W5H—Divisional Tournament

On April 3rd, our W5H team traveled to St. James for the Preliminary competition. We did very well, winning all our matches by a considera-ble margin. We then attended the Divisional tournament on April 10, at St. Nicholas of Bari where we lost 2 of our 3 matches. However, both games were extremely close, and we came within 3 points of winning. Thank you to the entire team (Nicholas Witowych, Taras Rawlinson, Logan Liut, Cameron Pardy, Tommy Gillespie, Jonathan Adams) and to Ms. Ferreira for her time, and a fantastic job coaching.

Enrichment--Grade 6 Dragons' Den

On Wednesday, April 13th, the Grade 6 class took part in the third "SMCS Dragons' Den". Our students developed unique business ideas and detailed plans as they prepared to present to a panel of Dragons. Our three Dragons, Mr. Douglas Hann (TD), Ms. Indira Gajusingh (BMO), and Ms. Eugenia Duodu (Visions of Science), tested our students' understanding of business concepts and provided valuable feedback.

Although many stood out, only two business ideas could be chosen as class winners. A big congratulations to Tomas Igreja (cake/cupcake decorator), and Derrick Xu and Jadyn Tauro (pollution-to-fuel converter) whose presentations impressed the Dragons.

A big thank you to the Grade 6 class for their hard work, to the Dragons for taking the time to spend an afternoon with us, and to the parents and staff who supported the class in their journey.

SMC Junior Volleyball Spartans

The SMC Spartans, led by the expe-rienced coach Rod Humana and supported by both teachers and alumni alike, were enthusiastic and determined to showcase their athletic prowess last month.

On April 7, 2017, the grade 9 and 10 high school volleyball athletes faced off against great competition at the tournament at Monsignor Percy Johnson school. Despite being short-handed and the smallest team in the tournament roster, the under-dog Spartans managed to topple the rest of the competitors and awe the crowd with their serves, spikes, and well-rounded defenses. They finished off in 1st place after an incredibly heated final match against the home team Jaguars, who stood in 1st in the TDCAA West Division.

Written by: Mr. M. Lunardo

On Tuesday, April 25th, the SMCS Spartans had a showing at the volley-ball tournament at Senator O'Con-nor. There, the Spartans won nearly every set of each game, except for one tied matchup prior to the playoffs. Qualifying in 1st place led them to the finals against Jean Vani-er, where they finished in second place.

The SMCS Spartans have proved themselves to be strong team players and a powerful force to be reckoned with in the games to come - great job boys!

On the weekend of April 29th and 30th the elementary students attended the TCDSB 2017 Swim Invitational. On Saturday, 37 SMCS swimmers participated. Seventeen of our students qualified for Sunday’s final events (top 16). But because of the Germa-ny tour, only 11 students were able to attend. Ten of the boys were in grades three and four, and 1 was in grade 7. We competed very well and came out of the pool with 3 medals. There was a really great surprise for us before the relay races began. Four time Olympic medalist Penny

Oleksiak showed up to hand out the medals to all the individual winners. Our grade 3 relay team won a bronze medal! Way to go guys! Our two other medals were won by Benjamin Norton. He won a silver for 25m fly, and a bronze for 50m free. All of our swimmers, coaches and parents de-serve a round of applause for working so hard to get to this point. Hopefully tour isn’t as close to the swim meet next year so we can win back our team trophy!
