AARP Driver Safety Course

Social Ministry will be sponsoring the AARP Driver Course. This

course is for driver’s 55 years of age and older.

The refresher 4 hour course is

Monday, June 5, 2017 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

The full course is for 8 hours split into two 4 hours sessions.

The date for the full course is

Wednesday, June 7, 2017 9:00 AM to 1 PM &

Monday, June 12, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

The training will be held in Fellowship Hall in the basement of the church. Please check

with your auto insurance provider to see which session is required for you to receive the

discount on your auto insurance. Those who take this Driver Safety Course are eligible to

receive a certificate for a 5% discount for 3 years on their automobile coverage.

Your insurance carrier might require each individual insured on the policy to attend the

class. The fee for this course is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non AARP mem-

bers. Make your check payable to AARP. There is no testing involved.

Come 10 to 15 minutes early on the first day for paperwork. Bring your driver’s license,

AARP membership card (if a member) and your check (Payable to AARP) or exact cash.

The Work Camp Youth will be hosting a PANCAKE BREAKFAST, to help sup-

port their trip to Camp Koinonia (Highland Lakes, NY- July 16th – July 21st).

The Pancake Breakfast will be held on JUNE 4th in Highland Hall

starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 10:30 a.m.

Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, cereal, fruit, coffee, tea, juice.

CHRISTIAN LITERACY June 2017 Christian Literacy Associates (CLA) has been providing the

key to eliminate illiteracy, build relationships, and share the

Good News using The Christian Literacy Series from right

here at our offices at St. John’s Lutheran Church of High-

land since 1975.

“The roots of happiness grow deepest in the soil of service.”

Teaching a son how to throw a football, helping a daughter learn to

change the oil in her first car, taking a tween fishing on Saturday even

though the office paperwork is overflowing… many fathers and father-

figures humbly serve their families and communities each day, without

much recognition. Thank you courageous men for spreading the seeds of

happiness, especially in the lives of those children and youth who view

themselves as unlovable.

During this sunflower and tiger lily season, squeals, giggles, and

laughter hang in the air at our BLOOM Summer Reading Camps! Christian

Literacy’s Basic Literacy Outreach Opening Minds Summer Reading Camps

and other summer programs using The Christian Literacy Series have be-

gun this month, locally and nationally. Children as young as four years old

to teenagers are receiving basic reading instruction in a small group setting

or in one-on-one tutoring sessions. Christian Literacy volunteers serve in

many capacities in these summer programs. They may be certified Chris-

tian Literacy tutors, Reading Reinforcers, facilitators of the craft and

themed camp activities, or daily prayer warriors. Each week, at our model

BLOOM Summer Reading Camps, the campers hear the life-giving Gospel.

In all programs using The Christian Literacy Series, students dive into

Scripture within each lesson and see Christ’s love in action through the

joyful service of the summer program staff.

If you would like to be trained in the use of The Christian Literacy Series, join us on Friday, June 23rd from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at St.

John’s of Highland in Pittsburgh for a BLOOM Parent/Community Literacy

Training Workshop. At Community Alliance Church in Butler, another text-

book training workshop for parents and community members on Friday,

June 30th from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. will be offered. Pre-registration

is required (contact@christianliteracy.org or 412-364-3777) for attend-

ance at either workshop. Spread some happiness in your family and com-

munity by becoming a Christian Literacy tutor today!

North Hills Community Outreach is collecting new backpacks and school supplies for

students in kindergarten through 12. Items needed include backpacks, notebooks,

binders, paper, folders, pencils, pens and calculators. Gently used Texas Instrument

graphic/scientific calculators are also needed for high school students. NHCO pro-

vides more than 1,200 backpacks full of school supplies for students each year. Do-

nations can be dropped off Monday through Friday, 9a.m. - 4p.m. through July 31 at

the NHCO office at 1975 Ferguson Road, Allison Park.

Walk, run or volunteer in the Bubble Run and help NHCO again, as the charity

partner of Bubble Run at Hartwood August 19. Bubble Run is a bubble-filled, family-

friendly 5k walk / run in which participants run or walk through mounds of colored

foam. Registrants can choose to donate to NHCO at the end of their registration

form. Visit bubblerun.com/ and search for the Pittsburgh run. In addition, volun-

teers will be needed for packet pickup, August 18, and event day, August 19. If a

quota of volunteers registers on behalf of NHCO, will receive a financial donation to

support our many services. Please note that the link to volunteer directly for NHCO

NHCO now offers online registration for volunteering to help seniors get to doc-

tor appointments, take them grocery shopping, do light yard work, drive shuttles and

NHCO collecting Spring Cleaning supplies-for distribution to families who use our

three food pantries. Items are appreciated by June 2, but will be accepted year

round. Items needed include: laundry detergent, antibacterial wipes, all-purpose

cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, dish detergent, pack of sponges and paper towels. Canvas

shopping bags are also appreciated. Please donate Mon-Fri, 9 am-4pm at NHCO Alli-

son Park, 1975 Ferguson Road, or call 412-487-6316 option 1 to make alternate ar-

rangements.

Ask the Attorney sessions for low-income families-Get free legal consultation for

issues such as divorce, bankruptcy, credit issues, family matters, rent disputes and

more is available for families in need. The next ATA sessions is at NHCO Allison Park,

1975 Ferguson Road, June 21. Attendees MUST preregister for these sessions by

Working families are waiting: Donate your car to Community Auto and help a low-

income, working individual. Vehicles donated to Community Auto are repaired and sold

at below-market value to local, working families who need them to get to work. Cars

not suitable for repair are sold at auction and the money is used for the program. Ask

STOP IDENTITY THEFT…CONTROL YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION!

In just the first seven months of 2014, at least 11 million private records were put

At risk in more than 300 separate data breaches, according to the nonprofit Iden-

tity Theft Resource Center. Some instances of identity theft are unauthorized

charges – others are smaller charges, such as the cost of a tank of gas or a meal at

a fast food restaurant, that blend in so they’re more likely to go unnoticed. And

still others are large withdrawals totaling thousands of dollars from bank and

investment accounts. Don’t despair: there’s a lot you can do to help keep your

data to yourself.

SET AND CHANGE PASSWORDS

Create a different and unique password for all financial and personal accounts.

Change your passwords several times a year –you could do it at the start of each

season so it’s easy to remember. The Federal Trade Commission suggests creat-

ing a hard-to-crack password by using the first letter of each word in a special

phrase (“I want to see the Pacific Ocean” or Iw2stPO). And do not share your

password with anyone else.

CHECK ACCOUNTS REGULARLY

The best way to prevent identity theft is to monitor your bank and credit account

activity and statements. Check insurance and investment accounts, utilities and

services that have been set up with automatic payments, and online accounts like

Amazon or eBay that may be tied to your credit cards or financial accounts.

DON’T CLICK ON THAT LINK

Identity thieves trick someone into providing bank, credit card or other financial

information by sending an email asking for account numbers or other data. This

email may ask for a simple reply or may provide a link to a legitimate-looking

website. Thieves are “phishing” for information. Never provide sensitive infor-

mation by email, and don’t click on links that you’re not sure of.

DON’T LET APPS AND WEBSITES STORE YOUR INFORMATION

Take the extra-safe step of typing it in each time you buy something. It’s a little

more work, but it’s safer to enter that information yourself each time you log on.

BE WARY OF FREE WI-FI

Many coffee shops and stores now offer free Internet access. Unless the business

offers a password-protected system, it may not be safe. Computer-savvy thieves

can more easily hack into Wi-Fi systems without passwords and then steal the

user names and account passwords saved on your computer, tablet or

smartphone.

ATTENTION Scrap-bookers, stampers & crafters! St. John’s now has a rubber stamp

lending library. It is located in the conference room and has lots of stamps

and stamp sets along with some books of ideas. There is a “directory”

book with samples of each stamp/set and a code system so it should be

easy to find the set once you chose what you want to borrow. (Please do

not take individual stamps out of a set). The sign-out sheet is in the front of

the directory. Fill in the information when you borrow something and

cross it out when you have returned things.

GREETING CARDS Need a special card for a special person? Handmade cards

are again available in Highland Hall at Sunday morning

Fellowship time. Choose the cards you would like and make

a donation to the St. John’s Family Emergency Fund. New cards are

added each week.

St. John's Stampers will be having "fun with

folds" on Saturday, June 10th from 9am until noon.

Cost will be $5/person for materials. All skills are

Please note that the Abitibi

Paper Recycling Dumpster which was located in the back parking lot has been re-

moved. We no longer receive a benefit for our ministry from it, and seeing that it many times overflows with

paper into our neighbors’ yards, and knowing that we all can recycle paper at home, the council decided to

have it removed. So sorry for any inconvenience!

In honor of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation this year,

our women’s summer Bible Study group will be taking a look

at the life and writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran reformer

who made an impact on the church and world within the last century,

and who many still remember today. He is a reminder of how the

Lutheran Church at its best, continues to be a reforming church. Our

study will take place on the following Wednesdays: June 21, June 28,

July 5, and July 12th. There will be two sessions offered on those days:

One at noon, and one at 7:00 p.m.. For more information, please

Come to an informal class about prayer. Maybe your prayer life is

stale or lacking and you need a kick start or a new perspective. We will use

Luther’s small catechism, CATS, devotionals, scripture and your experiences.

Bring your beverage of choice and we will fellowship together. Please let the

church office know if you will be attending so we can have the materials for you.

Please bring your Bible, small Catechism (if you have one) and any other

materials you wish. We will meet on Saturday mornings in the conference room

at 9 AM for the month of June, beginning on June 10th. knitting will follow
