REMINISCENCES OF LINCOLNCOUNTYAND WHITE OAKS··By Old Sages and Stagers.

They sent me out with a note demanding to know who the leader ·of the party was,and invited him into the house to talk thematter over. Carlyle, the leader of the Whiteoaks party, at first objected.

Greathouse putting himselfas hostagefor his safety while he was in there, he tookoff his arms and walked into the trap. In themeantime I was backward and forwardbetween the two parties, carrying dispatches.

Getting hungry about 11 0' clock Iwent into the house to rustle up a dinrier. Ifound Carlyle getting under the influence. ofliquor and insisting on going out, while theothers insisted on his staying.

While I was getting dinner Mr: Cook,Greathouse's partner, carried dispatchesbetween the camps. For some reason theWhite Oaks boys became suspicious; thingswere not. as they should be with their leader, and they decided to storm the fort thereforesent me word by Mr. Cook to come out aswar would commence in eamest... ., I stepped outdoors, intending to go to

some safe place and witness the bloody conflict. After being out Cook called me to stopa moment and he would go with me. .

I stopped and turned when a-crash, aman came through a Window, Bang! Bang!,he man's dying hell, and poor Carlyle tumbles to the ground with three bullets in him -- dead. .

I started to run away from the house, with CbO~ behind me, and toward a barricadeof the White Oaks boys when they commenced to shoot at us, and so did all the otherobys behind the different barricades.'~ .• . . Abou 60 or 75 shots were fired at us,~ullets flying from all directions, and I beganto feel decidedly incomfortable -- was afraidsome of them might hit me.

I thought it was 'a ground hog caseand I had better be the ground hog, so Ijumped several feet in the air, threw mybands' up over my head and fell flat on myrace and lay there., Cook, behind me, thought it was agooif"scheme, so he iimitated my example. After three or four more bullets came by veryclose to my head the firing suddenly stopped. We crawled out amongst the boys when theytold us all was a mistake; they thought wewere making a feint to cover the retreat ofthedesperados. . .r That 1S aobut all there IS to the troubleat the Grethouse ranch. Cook and myselfwent that night to Abel's ranch, about threemiles from there and returned the next morning. We found poor Carlyle frozen stiffwherehe fell, tied a blanket around him and made ahole a little towers the east from where hefell, and buried him the best we could. Hewas afterwards taken up and put in a box bya sheriff's posse. .

. No more at present, I remain, yourtruly, J. Steck.

A Monsoon season continues to giveLincoln County. somesmall relief. from thedrought conditions wehave suffered throughfor the last severalmonths.

A fair chance of

going to meetings out ofstate. And maybe shemight do some things inNew Mexico that willlook good . on thenational stage.

Richardsonimmediately started setting himself apart with"bold initiatives." Hebecame a tax-cuttingDemocrat. The RailRunner commuter trainand other environmental initiatives made him"The Greenest' Governor." And he took a~ead~rshi'p role onimmigration.

Watch for thesame types of actionfrom Martinez.

.Grooming Gov.Martinez for a vicepresidential role is thatshe has reportedly saidthroughout her life thatshe wants to be president.

She could havehad the GOP nomination for state attorney'general .in any recentelection but she had hergoal set higher.

. . J~st a bit m~re onthe last school board m~eting:Firstoff I'd like 'uto acknowledge the young people (3) that went up to me that night as Iwas leaving after board had gone into executive 'session, and acknowledged that they liked and read this column -- made my year..Thanks, and'keep on reading.' . -, . "

And a bit more .on the presentation made by a school officialabout how 'we should celebrate'how Carrizozo schools had been recognized for showing improvement, .and passed.out some coloredcharts tothe board members. It's funny, but all the charts that are released by thestate show that there is nothing to start celebrating 'about. And whyweren't the 'colored charts' not passed out to the audience in attendancethat night? Why was the audience .not acknowledged? That is exactly thenegligent attitude that'is part of the problem at our school.

Peopleare encouraged to a~end boardmeetings, but wlien someone does go and dares to ask questions, they rarely get straight answers, are shown little or no respect at alll Some board members act like theyhave mo~e important things to do and show their, indifference by yawnmg, looking at the clock etc. Others really don't hide how they feel aboutthe evening's .guests and just gives them 'the bird' (where was this etti ..quette acquiredv), While others just go there just to whatseems, to makean app~arance, while infonn~g~h~audience that their time fo! speaking~p has Just be,enreduced .- thIS IS Just another way of controlling mqusitive people that want some answers,. . , . . '

. While making the colored chart presentation the school officialnever turned toward the audience, only the board, All the audience gotout of the presentation was a viewof her back. Was this a deliberateaction? When I was going to school my teachers always stressed to us theimportanceof facing all; audience, face to face, guess that isn't practicedat our, local scbcof-.. It should. Any person employed by our schoolshould realize that they are not being paid by the school board or anyhigher a~minstrative person, thry are employees of taxpayers and 'arebelng paid by the same. The attitude seems to be that taxpayers or people that want answers to certain inquiries are trespassing on private prop-erty -- but ifrm 110tmistakel1;~his is a public school. .

Interviews for the' POSItiOn of bookkeeping Were goin0- on thisweek ...• or.one of the positions I should say.. Like I mentioned b~fore theboard president stated that the Salal)! ofthe future two positions would becomparabl~ to the one sal~ry :paid last ye~r. Meantime, m:p:' two footballcoaches (hlg1~ school and Jr. h1gh) are having to doall then work, plus afew extra dutIes,all by themselves. M.aybe all ~they' have to do is say th~tthe work has gotten too much to handle and 'maybe.some assistants will.

THOUGHTS·

The Outhouse Race that will be held onMonday during the Carrizozo Labor Day StreetFair parade, should remind older people ofback when outhouses 'were commonly used. These old buildings usually had a catalog alonside the one or two hole facility. Reading wasnot the main use for the catalogs, though youngmen were known to spend time looking atladies undies while in the confines of the outhouse with a moon on the. door.

. Evidently using the old time outhouseswas a former seat of learning, which mayormay not be used as an example of how timeshave changed. Anyway, th~ way things aregoing at the national level, It may be time toreinstituethe old outhouses, not so much as foruse as for the old time teaching that the outhouse is similar to the old tool shed. Decadesago parents 'would take' their children to thetool shed for a long talk. '. .

Maybe some national officials need tobe taken to the tool shed, or outhouse, and hearwhat parents and others have to say. It appearsthat too few national officials are hearing anything people have to say. Right now manynational officials are preening' for the 9-.11commemoration ceremonies and want to looktheir best. They should take the time to listen towhat people are talking about. . '

Perhaps the national officials shouldtake time to remember why they are there andwho put them there. They will continue to garner their pay for the remainder of their lives, but what about the people who .are beingdeprived of their due? What about the mis-useof stimulus money? There are more and-merecases of stimulus money being tossed aside fornon-deserving people to pilfer instead of beingused to benefit the truly needy.

Even though some people claim to havebenefitted, what about the ones who shouldhave received money and didn't? What aboutthe ones who pocketed the money and never

. told anyone? And what about the children whoare being pushed aside from first one programto another? Years ago we were told of ''NoChild' Left Behind" and how all childrenwhould be advanced to the next grade. Now theopposite is being touted. .

, Regardless ofhow it is explained, thereis something wrong and the only solution maybe to take a trip to the outhouse. Watch yourfavorite outhouses racers next Monday inCarrizozo. '
