In 2004 he released his essay criticizing the use of “subversion” charges used to silence journalists and activists and he has been the target of police

CHARTER 08

Charter 08 is a manifesto initially signed by over 350 Chinese intellectuals and human rights activists, adopting name and style from the anti-Soviet Charter 77 issued by dissidents in Czechoslovakia.

It was published on 10 December 2008.

Liu Xiabo was one of main authors

ARREST

Two days before the official release of the Charter,8 December 2008,Liu was taken into custody by the police

On 23 June 2009, the Beijing procuratorate approved Liu's arrest on charges of "suspicion of inciting subversion of state power„

In December 2009 he was sentenced for 11 years imprisonment.

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE On 8 October 2010, the

Nobel Committee awarded Liu the Nobel Peace Prize "for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China „

his statement, titled "I have no enemies", was later read in the ceremony which Liu was unable to attend due to imprisonment
