YEAR TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE

BEST ICE HOCKEY CAMP IN THE

WORLDWelcome to the Czech International Hockey Camp, now in its 13th year of helping players and their parents spend great hockey vacations in the Czech Republic. We are proud to have had more than 4500 young play-ers and 1700 parents from over 34 countries from all over the world which have chosen our camps as part of their off-season training. Again in 2012 we are of-fering intensive training camps for players between the ages of 6 and 18 years of age. On and off ice sessions are provided by educated and experienced coaches and instructors with perfect knowledge of English which is also the official camp language. We also offer two inten-sive Goalie Camps led by Josef Hovora, an experienced

coach of such personalities as Hasek, Turek, Cechmanek, Hnilicka, Salficky, Pavelec, Stepanek, Vokoun and many others during their youth.

During the whole year our company also organizes special events at your own request. We tailor practices, exhibi-tion games and tournaments for teams wishing to come to the Czech Republic and Europe.

Czech players are one of the most successful players the NHL and other national leagues. The success of Czech ice hockey stems from its time-tested and competitively proven coaching and training techniques. The Czech na-

tional team won the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, also receiving the title of World Champion several times prior and after that. Winning their last World Champi-onship title in 2010 in Germany and receiving a perfect bronze in 2011 in Slovakia. Further also the Czech Junior National Team was fortunate enough to win the World Championship in two consecutive years, both in 1999 and in 2000.

In this brochure we want to present to you everything that is being organized by us for you in the year 2012. So come and see why the Czech International Hockey Camp is the best camp in the world!

HOW CAN YOU PICK THE RIGHT CAMP?

AN UNFORGETTABLE INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR CAMPERS AND ADULTS ALIKE

THE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD COME TO THE CAMP?

Here are a few key questions to be answered wHile cHoosing an ice Hockey camp:

What are the general conditions for training and accommodation like? Is everything in one place? What are the facilities like? How much guaranteed ice time is provided every day? What other activites are offered and how are they organized? Do the advertised trainers actually participate in the camp? Are they qualified? What language skills do the trainers, counselors and managers have? How many counselors does each group have? To what extend and how are kids supervised in their accommodations? How is the communication between the camp and the parents/kids? What are the camp’s references? How much tradition and experience does it have? What is the general camp environment like? What is the atmosphere like?

A CHANCE TO DEVELOP YOUR INDIVIDIUAL AND TEAM ICE HOCKEY SKILLS

Practice and learn an intensive type of HOCKEY game, under the professional supervision of ex-perienced trainers. We allow a maximum number of 27 players on the ice so that the training ses-sions are as intensive and non-stop as you can

imagine and manage. It’s not going to be that easy-but you will feel the results through self-improvement and self- satisfaction almost immediately! We believe this to be the best personal reward that we can offer you.

Even if you train hard, you will still have FUN! There is no other game which should be played just for the feeling of power and victory. To lead the team to victory, you have to enjoy it, be excited, play with your heart-mind-soul, know and try to get to know both the competitor and your team. For those with the heart of an athlete this should be all about FUN.

Your BODY has many different needs! That’s why there is a detailed attention devoted to overall body develop-ment such as dry land training, biking, swimming, etc. Nev-ertheless, if one trains hard one has to also make sure to recover properly after a hard day’s work. Therefore, our professional trainers make sure that each and every player unwinds with the help of special massages, sauna or Jacuzzi sessions.

But don´t forget about your MIND. The camp offers a great opportunity to meet other ice hockey enthusiasts

from all over the world. They will become your training partners, teammates and occasionally competitors during the games. This is exactly the environment where friend-ships for life are formed, as it is the love for the game that bonds people together no matter where they are from. While exposed to the different cultures of the coaches and players alike, you will gain a better understanding of sport and life from other countries and regions of the world. The exposure to different life perspectives and cul-tures will not just help you grow hockey wise, but it will also help you to grow mentally and socially.

The camp location is the Czech Republic! It is a country with an excellent ice hockey tradition, boasting the most NHL hockey players from any European country, which is amazing considering the country’s relatively small popula-tion. But it is also one of the most beautiful and popular historical sites in the world. The entire country will daz-zle you with its majestic countryside, castles, cities and quant towns. The town of Nymburk is no exception and offers many opportunities for players and parents alike. For those interested, we can arrange trips to historical and cultural sites. These tours will amaze you and offer you many unforgettable memories to take home.

on ice training Training on the ice includes Ludek Bukac’s IMO (Imaginary Model Opponent) method. This consists of placing ob-stacles on the ice in constantly changing configurations which simulate different opponent situations, pushing the player to develop his performance and technique in all possible conditions. This is quite demanding in terms of strength, skating and maneuverability.

On-ice curriculum is comprised of circuit training, skill de-velopment drills (full ice drills) and small area games that includes Power-skating, Stickhandling (player has a puck on his stick the majority of the day), Puck Protection, Body Contact. Shooting, Passing, Conditioning, Agility, Game Preparation. The station training is another impor-tant component and involves work in small groups, each led by a different trainer and focusing on a specific skill or set of skills.

We are teaching and training players both the offensive and defensive aspects of the game. All skills are taught and trained at top speed simulating game situations. All levels are taught at an age appropriate level. Player

classroomWe provide players with a game situation analysis almost every day. Players are filmed during almost every practice and later in the classroom this footage is reviewed and commented on by the coaches. Ice hockey theory, rules and tactics can be explained very easily with the help of video sessions.

mental trainingPersonal responsibility, teambuilding, self-discipline and motivation are terms that we not only strongly believe in but that we also teach to all of our players.

placement by the Czech International Hockey Camp Staff is a key ingredient to each players success.

Typical elements of Czech ice hockey are also implement-ed during ice training, including crossing, playing in the corners, open up, passing and transition of the neutral zone. Non-traditional games and contests have also prov-en to be a valuable part of the training process. Activities such as ice soccer or ice basketball, using a tennis ball in-stead of a puck and relay and obstacle course races keep the players’ attention and motivation high.

dryland training Ice hockey is a complex game and players have to be able to recognize and respond to multiple stimuli at once. Af-ter players master the basic obstacle course or exercise circuit, trainers add further components to help develop coordination and fine motor skills. The result is that by the second week, players are able to run the obstacle course while simultaneously dribbling a basketball and kicking a soccer ball, or do squats on a balance board while following the trainer’s movement.

Professionally supervised stretching enables players to reach their full potential. The goal is to teach the play-ers optimal posture and movement techniques. Bad habits, once learned, can be difficult or nearly impossible to un-learn, leading to imbalanced muscle development, excess strain, and eventually to joint and muscle injury. Strength training is carefully supervised and adapted to the play-er’s age and physical development. This is especially im-portant in the case of younger players in earlier growth phases. Our training programs are designed holistically, taking into account the physical demands of ice training sessions. Proper execution of each exercise, adequate rest and recovery time and the individual players physical fit-ness are important factors in our program development.

rest period, recoVery time Undoubtedly exercise is a key component of health and physical fitness, nevertheless it is just as important for top athletes as well as for young players to be able to detect the thin line that there is between training and hurting one’s body. Especially, athletes should never for-get that one’s health is the most important thing that one possesses and that through overtraining one can do the body more harm than good. Residual fatigue from training fades more rapidly than residual fitness, once an organism’s adaptivity is lost further training leads to overtraining. That is why we at the CIHC feel so strongly about quality recovery time for players of all ages. Sauna, swimming pool sessions, Jacuzzi or massages are only some ways through which we have our players unwind after a hard days practice. We know that without pro-cedures of this sort further training does not make any sense. We try to teach all of our camp participants the importance of quality relaxation periods after a day out on the ice.

nutrition and daily regime One of the ultimate goals of every sport is to improve one’s performance. In achieving this goal choosing the right nutrition plays just as a vital role as a well-designed training program. In order to supply the body with the needed energy to withhold such high demands on its muscle, joint and nervous system well-balanced nutrition is essential. Optimum performance requires optimum nu-trition, especially during the intensive training that our camp provides. We not only plan the content but also the time and size of all five meals that our players receive on a daily basis. In addition we of course pay careful atten-tion to adequate hydration (2-3 liters of unsweetened liq-uids daily), because we know that everybody who trains hard needs to drink adequately in order to perform at ones highest level.

foodPlayers get five meals a day. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks include vegetables and fruits. A healthy diet with a good mix of sugars, fats and proteins is essential for any athlete who wants to reach the top. An adequate balance of vitamins, minerals and other important com-ponents play a vital role in any perfect sports diet. We care about the meals that our players receive and we also teach them how to eat and drink in order to train efficiently.

superViZingWe guarantee 24 hours of supervision every day. Each group will be assigned its own counselor whose focus will be on the players throughout the whole week. This instructor is also responsible to provide basic health care for the players of his group.

free timeExcept for during rest periods there is almost no free time for the youth category players. On Wednesdays we organ-ize a half-day trip to Prague, which serves as a great dis-traction and kids get to forget about ice hockey training for a while. This also helps us to minimize the risk of the kids getting injured during practice due to fatigue. We show them the beautiful center of Prague, historic Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, the old Astronomical Clock at the Old Town Square. Next to the historical site the kids also get to visit Prague’s biggest ice hockey store where the kids are able to buy unique Czech ice hockey items.

training metHodsSpecial goalie training using modern techniques takes place under the watchful eye of Josef Hovora, an experi-enced coach of such personalities as Hasek, Turek, Cech-manek, Hnilicka, Salficky and many others during their youth. Throughout the whole week, goalies get compre-hensive training which will help them substantially in the following seasons. Video technology is used during the training on the ice. Players are taped in a variety of situ-ations then the videos are analyzed right on the spot or in the nearby classroom. This provides an important feedback so that the goalie can eliminate weak points.

Another tool used is the goalie band. This is a revolution-ary new training tool for ice hockey goalies of all ages and skill levels. It teaches a goalie how to properly posi-tion themselves in the goal crease when facing a shooter by “gently reminding them” when they are acking up too far in the crease. By using the Goalie Band in practice situ-ations, goalies become accustomed to setting up at the front of the crease area, thus cutting the angles and giv-ing shooters much less of a target to shoot at.

on-ice training Our specialized station regimen challenges you to perfect your fundamentals and then advances you to game-like situations with shooters. Along with Coach Hovora we

have 4 additional goalie coaches giving you a 4:1 goalie to coach ratio to maximize your learning experience.

taken advantage of this offer, including a team of RAF pilots serving in Iraq, the Sheffield University team, the Oxford University women’s team and even the men’s Ku-wait national team.

training metHodsThe CIHC Adult Camp is offered to players 18 years of age and older. Players of all skill levels are welcome into our program. We offer three skill groups to choose from: Begin-ner, Intermediate and Advanced. Each group is limited to 20 skaters and 4 goalies. All adult campers will have the option of up to 5 hours of ice time each day! Each group will receive a 1.5 hours training session in the morning, 1.5 hours training session in the afternoon and 1 hour of optional ice in the evening. The optional ice time is available for private lessons and individual skill development every evening. There will be also a dryland and regeneration ses-sion each day. Optional recreational activities include swim-ming, football, golf, tennis and roller hockey.

On ice training sessions will emphasize improving individ-ual hockey skills including skating, passing, shooting, stick handling, etc. We will also focus on team play, as all camp-ers will be taught effective offensive attacks, successful defensive strategies and learn from critiqued, video-taped team scrimmages.

TEAM CAMPS

Ice hockey is not a typical women’s sport. Why did you decide for ice hockey? When I was young, we used to live in a little town called Libochovice and I used to play street hockey outside with my friends. One day my mother’s friend saw me play-ing and she told me that I should try playing on the ice. I went and tried out and since then they could not take me away from the ice.

What league do you play in the USA?I go to a prep high school in Pennsylvania and we play all prep schools in North America. The league is called NA-PHA which stands for North American Prep Hockey As-sociation.

What are your dreams or goals for the future? My dreams are to get into great college/university and play great hockey and get great education. My other dream is qualify with the Czech Women’s National Team for the Olympics in Russia in 2014.

What do you like about the Czech Interna-tional Hockey Camp?I like a lot of things about the Czech International Hockey Camp. I love how the kids can meet people from all around

the world and can make new friends from different coun-tries. I like that the language of the camp is English so that the kids try to speak English and it also pushes them to learn English in order to understand. I also like that the coaches are from around the world and not just from the Czech Republic but for example also from America.

You´re the only woman coach at the Camp. How is it? Is it really a men’s world?Being the only woman coach at the camp is great and very interesting. It gives me a challange to prove to the guys that girls can also play hockey. Many people think that girls should not play, but if the girls love it, then why should they stop. I do not think that it is only a men’s world, but I do think that men get more respect for playing hockey than girls just because it is more in-tense and faster. It is just that girls do not get as much support as boys.

What are your plans for the year 2011?My plans are to get into a great college/university and finish high school and play hockey. I do not really like to plan because every time I have a plan something changes so I leave it alone and see how things turn out.

In a nutshell, give us a description of your camp. We came up with the idea of doing a summer hockey camp about thirteen years ago. Things moved quickly, and after weighing the pros and cons we decided to go for it. Now we are getting ready for our 13th year and I think we’re doing a pretty good job since interest in our camp has been growing every year. Regardless of indi-vidual players’ performance we try to offer each camper the best training environment and professional approach 24 hours a day. We’re an international camp where kids from all over the world train together. Here they can not only improve their playing abilities, but also have a great time, make new friends and learn to live together with people from other countries.

What were the beginnings like, and what has changed since you started? When we were starting it was more like a little family busi-ness, 5 coaches and no more than 50 kids. At the time we had no idea that we would someday have ten times that many. There have been changes in our training process as well. At the beginnig each group had 2 hours on the ice in the morning, 2 hours in the afternoon, and open ice in the evening. It was too much. After a couple of years

we switched to a system where the first training which focuses on skill development is 90 minutes and the sec-ond training which focuses on playing is only 75 minutes. We kept our open ice time in the evening because we’ve had positive experiences with it. Players can practice what they learned during the day or skate with their parents.

Where do you train, and how do you take care of the players?

We’ve been in Nymburk from the very beginning. It’s a town close to Prague where we have absolutely perfect training conditions. Both the ice arena and the sport center next door have been really good to us. We have access to everything they offer, including massage and recuperation facilities.. The players stay either in the hotel next to the ice arena or at the sport center. They get 5 meals a day.

How are the players divided into groups? We divide the players into groups based on their age. At the moment we have four age groups and a special group for goalies. Each group has four trainers and one coun-selor who is responsible for the group when they’re not training.

Since you mentioned the trainers, who are they? Every group is led by an experienced, respected trainer. Goalies are trained by Josef Hovora, a respected name and former national team player. Our dryland coach is Leos Minar who works with the NHL and the top Czech league as a consultant. I should also mention Jakub Petr who trains the Czech junior national team and, of course, Jan Brychta who has been the head coach of the Kuwait National Team. Most of our trainers have the highest achievable licensing and are graduates of the Sports and Physical Education department of Charles University.

Are you preparing anything new for next year? As far as the program is concerned, it will be more or less the same. After our experiment with artificial ice last year we may introduce a few innovations into our train-ing procedures.

COACH INTERVIEW

HEAD COACH

DAVID CISAR

As a graduate of the Marketing and Management Masters´ Program at Charles University he has worked at several top manager positions with-in the sport industry. In 2000 he founded the Czech International Hockey Camp of which he is the director. His motto is: “Stars are made not born.”

Nearly every ice hockey camp is unique in some way whether in its location, atmosphere or program. We went for a look behind the scenes with the co-founder of the Czech Republic’s best and most successful ice hockey camp, the CIHC Head Coach Lukas Tramba.

LUKAS TRAMBA

After achieving his Master´s in Sport and Physical Education at Charles University where he got the internationally rec-ognized licence “A” in ice hockey coaching, he worked in the USA as a Coach at Heartland ice hockey camp and as Assis-tant Coach of Utah Golden Eagles. Do you have some pre-game or post-game ritual? Certainly everyone has some kind of ritual, like they do the same things all day before the game, eat the same things, put on the same equipment, stretch the same way during warmups. It’s pretty similar with me too.

Do you celebrate wins after the game a lot? Do they celebrate more in Znojmo or in the NHL? We don’t celebrate wins too much either in the Premiere League or in the NHL. In the NHL there are too many games, so there isn’t even time. There’s only one win you can celebrate, and that’s when you are holding the cup over your head after the finals.

What’s it like to have the Stanley Cup in your hands? Having the Stanley Cup in your hands is great. There’s a lot of hard work behind it, and you have a great feeling from achieving the highest goal in hockey, and the feeling is satisfying and really wonderful.

What NHL team would you like to play for in the future? I’d like to finish my career in New Jersey.

If you were with the New Jersey Devils on a deserted island and you didn’t have anything else to eat, who would you eat first and why? That’s a funny question. There’s a couple of guys who take vitamins and different supplements, so I think I would prefer to eat one of the guys who eats healthy food because they would make a good meal and a little would go a long way :-)

After your career ends do you plan to come back to the Czech Republic or will you stay overseas? I’m sorry that I might disappoint you but you have to look to the future, and we’ll see how everything works out. I think it’s probably more realistic that I would stay in the States. But your life can change from day to day.

Last question. What soccer team do you root for? I like the game and I like Barcelona’s performance. I also enjoy watching almost all games of the English league.

How do our campers feel about camps 2011? What did they like? Were they satisfied? The answers to these questions can help you to decide wheter you come to the Czech International Hockey Camp or not. That´s why we provide you with the following survey.

How did you like the camp´s training methods?Out of more than 100 players who responded to our sur-vey during the summer camps of 2011, more than 85%

described the On Ice Training Methods as excellent. No-body described On Ice Trainings worse than normal. Less than 3% expressed their criticism towards Dryland and Regeneration. Only Dryland Training was described as bad, but this was only in one single case.

In total, how did you like the camp? Camps 2010 were in 92% of the cases described as excel-lent and very good. Only 7% chose the answer “normal” and 1% had some complaints about the camps. Out of

more than 100 players responding the question form no-body described their satisfaction with the answer “bad”.

Will you come back next year?Out of more than 100 players responding 88% expressed their wish to come back next year. During all of the camp only four players said that they would not return to the camp again.

wHat did tHe parents say about our camps in 2010? Camp was very good. Mickey was the only US player and got a true international experience playing with Swiss, Finnish, Russian and German players. Czech coaching style was a nice contrast to the American one. And we turned it into a great vacation as well. The staff of camp is wonderful and it is a very comfortable transition for anyone from North America.

Chris and Mickey McDonagh, USA

Nice little town. People from everywhere. Where are the Austrian Hockey players? Can´t find them! The kids im-proved their play. See you next year!

Angela Breugel, Austria

Just excellent. And please next year I would like Mr Mahovs-ky to be a skating coach for my son next year. He is great.

Nikita, Hockey Club Riga

The on-ice sessions of the goalie camp was well-structured. The coaches´team with the new goalie coach from Nym-burk seemed to me very professional and dedicated. The shooters team was the best team I ve ever seen in my life.

Joe Bruce, USA

Very professional. Good value for money. Limit the num-ber of players. Make sure the kids understand what you say in English. Let them repeat what you said (on the ice) so that they can pay more attention.

Maxmilian Heidengerber, Germany

The kids are motivated and have a lot of fun. The exer-cises are excellent. Nice town. Great days for the kids on/off ice. Camps in August would be great to stay in shape for the next season.

Ms Lozon, USA

The Czech Republic is my dream country. I have read a lot about succesful Czech ice hockey players and I wanted to help my daugh-ter to be as good as the Czech players are. When I arrived at Nym-burk just everything wass wonderful as I had expected. I hope my daughter got great experience. Thanks the camp. But special thanks to the office staff - especially Tereza and Anna. They are so helpful, friendly, educated and very nice. You guys are helping the parents but I would like to sugest something: coffee maker, mosquito prevention and also think about the cost of transport. This could be the way how to make people even happier.

Nuran Otts, Turkey

Our impression is that it´s a very professional hockey camp. Everybody is doing their job very professionally from the ice coaches to the dryland coach.

Jean Marc Rigolle, Switzerland

Great coaches. Kids loved the camp. We can see a drastic improvement on boys skating and stick handling abilities. Skills regiment was much more demanding then similar programs offered in the United States.
