Cyst Nematode

You will enjoy full online access to submit paperwork, order supplies, and view all testing history.

The cyst nematode (Heterodera/ Meloidodera), is a small plant-parasitic roundworm that attacks the roots of the susceptible plants and causes external damage.

The presence of cyst nematodes is not usually obvious at the time of initial soil infestation. Population density must increase until it is sufficient to cause above-ground symptoms.

Plants that have

adequate moisture and fertility

are better able to withstand cyst

nematode infection.

Additional Soil Tests

A variety of soil test packages are available with recommendations beginning at $10.50 per sample.

Analysis is done on-site.

Cyst Nematode Soil Sampling

1. Collect 10 to 20 soil cores in a zig zag pattern across the entire area to be sampled. (Do not exceed 15-20 acres per sample.)

2. Collect soil cores from areas of similar soil texture and cropping history. If different crops or markedly different soil textures occur in the same field, sample them separately.

3. Collect to a depth of 6 to 8 inches around the plant root system (if present).

4. Bulk the cores in a container and mix thoroughly.

5. Store the sample away from sunlight in a cool area until it is shipped to the laboratory.

Additional Sampling Info

For fields infested with Cyst Nematodes, run samples before any susceptible varieties are grown, or once a year if resistant varieties are grown in rotation.

Sample Sugar Beet Cyst Nematode injured fields once a year regardless of crop choice or insecticide/nematicide use.

It is best to sample when plants are present. Cyst numbers will be highest when the plants are almost mature until shortly after harvest. Sampling near harvest will lend you plenty of time for variety selection or choosing alternative crops for the next year.

The quality and condition of the sample determines the reliability of the results.

Collect soil samples from the area between the damaged and the healthy plants. If samples are collected from the center of the affected area, Cyst numbers may appear much lower than their actual number.
