Our playing fields are ‘not a toilet for dogs’ Yet again Bishopston Community Council has received complaints about dog fouling on the playing fields and football pitch in Murton. The problem is that the dogs are fouling on the pitch and the owners are not cleaning it up. We have received complaints from concerned residents about the amount of dog fouling in the area generally, but especially on the pitch. People, sadly likely to be local residents, are walking their dogs in the area and then letting them foul and not picking up after them. When teams are playing some of the players are slipping on the dog fouling and this is posing a major health issue. Dog fouling can cause blindness in children, and is also extremely unpleasant to find stuck to the sole of your shoes never mind find it on your clothes. D Commencing at 7pm Wednesday 22 nd December We are appealing to dog owners to keep their animals on the lead and to stay off the pitch please, it is not a dog’s toilet. To those exercising their dogs in the village could we appeal to you, please take a plastic bag or a poop scoop with you and use it to pick up after your pets and take it home and bin it. Please do not allow your pets to foul on the streets or green areas around the village. It is not just unsightly, it is also a health hazard. The City and County of Swansea employ staff who may patrol the area and will fine offenders. What are the penalties? You could either be given a "fixed penalty notice" of £75, similar to a parking ticket, where you have to make the payment direct to the Council, or you may be prosecuted for allowing your dog to foul in a public place without cleaning up. You may then be fined up to £1,000. Bishopston Blues You may have noticed South Wales Police mounted

section horseboxes visiting the village. Don’t worry,

there is nothing sinister going on, one of the local

stables is used as a holiday home for the horses

recuperation. The welfare of their animals is

something the South Wales Police take very seriously.

Not to be outdone, the dog section have teamed up

with the Dogs Trust and Wooden Green to publish a

book filled with stories of funny, heroic and some sad

stories, all being true. The book is called “A Heroes

Tail” it is written by John Gaye, Vice Chairman of

Dogs Trust, who has been staying in Bishoptson on

his many visits to South Wales.

Proceeds from the book will be used to assist in the

building of new kennels at Waterton, Bridgend.

The book is being sold all over the world, and it’s

great to know that Bishopston has been at the centre

of it all. For a copy contact 07957 367078 or via the

website www.aherostail.org we are told that there is a

secret stash of these books in the village that not even

the best sniffer dog could find !!

Road Safety Parking unfortunately drivers continue to park cars

mounted on the pavement. This action forces

pedestrians to leave the safety of the pavement onto

the road to be able to pass your car, in particular

people with children in pushchairs and toddlers in

hand, as well as persons using mobility aids such as

wheelchairs or walking frames.

With the encouragement to exercise more, and

children being urged to walk to school, it is not

unreasonable for footways to be kept clear for

pedestrians to use. Please, before you park on a

footway think pedestrians.

Cyclists it is surprising how many near misses have

been reported by motorists because a cyclist has not

been wearing reflective clothing or their cycle lamps

have not been bright enough to be seen clearly by a

driver. If cycling at night, please ensure that you are

visible, in particular if you are travelling along Clyne

Common, this is for your own safety as well as other

road users.

Drivers please remember during inclement weather

the Highway Code advises dipped headlights should

be used. There are a number of drivers travelling in

fog and rain with no lights or only side lights on.

Remember See and be Seen.

Hedges Residents are respectfully reminded of the need to

ensure that their hedges are not overhanging

boundaries, footways, footpaths or carriageways.

This is especially important on those routes used by

children and mothers pushing prams and push chairs

and those having to use walking aids or wheelchairs,

who may be forced to leave the safety of a footpath to

pass an overgrown or overhanging hedges or bush.
