CM ENC16 CM ENC16 CyberResearch’s line of smart remote data-acquisition modules has been expanded with over 30 new modules in the CYMOD 7000 series. These new units extend the capabilities of traditional CYMOD and ADAM 4000 lines (see yellow box on page 157 and detailed writeups on pages 158, 159, and 195). All three series have on-board micro- processors, each encased in a rugged industrial-grade plastic casing to survive harsh plant and laboratory environments. Their built-in intelligence lets them act as direct links to a wide variety of sensors, providing signal conditioning, analog and digital I/O, data display, and RS-232/ 422/485 communication, with USB and Ethernet capabilities, too. Versatility, Simplicity, and Safety Modules talk on a twisted pair for serial data. Two-wire RS-232/422/ 485 technology keeps the number of cables, connectors, repeaters, and filters to a minimum, simplifying installation and reducing cost. Standardize on one module type to handle most measurement needs for a whole plant. As an example, the CM 7019R module accepts five millivolt ranges, four voltage ranges, one current range, and direct input from 11 different thermocouples. Other models are equally versatile. Printable ASCII characters for module commands let you write applications in any high-level language that supports ASCII string functions. You can use virtually any PC to manage your remote module network. Easy mounting to DIN rails or panel- mount anywhere. Modules can piggy- back for tight spaces, and use our plastic enclosures to place modules wherever you need them. Removable screw terminal blocks make wiring and field maintenance easy: leave your wiring intact while connecting or disconnecting modules. Terminals accept 1 #12AWG or 2 #14~22AWG wires. Use unregulated 10~30VDC power for any of these modules. If you don’t have a power source in that range, power supplies like our CM 243 (pp. 158 & 161) provide 24 VDC from AC sources up to 264V. Watchdog timer circuits in CYMOD and ADAM modules reset them automatically in the event of system failure. RS-485 Multi-Drop Networking All CYMOD and ADAM modules use the EIA RS-485 communication protocol. Inter- face modules let you connect to RS-232/ 422, USB, and Ethernet networks. All modules use optical isolators to prevent ground-loop problems and limit damage from power surges. Many also include overvoltage protection at levels to 240VRMS. RS-485 Converters & Repeaters: Control via RS-232, Ethernet, or USB If no RS-485 interface is available on the host computer, you can use an RS-232/ 485 Converter Module (7520 or 4520) to translate standard RS-232 signals into fully isolated RS-485 signals while adding pro- tection against voltage spikes. Our CM 7560 and 7188 series of modules make it easy to communicate with your modules via addressable Ethernet or a USB port (p. 195). Both the converter and repeater modules automatically control the RS-485 bus direction without external handshaking signals from the host. The CM 7520s support up to 256 modules, CM 4520 supports up to 128, and the ADAM 4520 supports up to 32. Our new CM 7510 repeaters support up to 2048 modules on an RS-485 bus. Analog Input Our remote modules have the ability to acquire multiple types and ranges of analog signals. You select the type and range remotely by issuing commands from the host computer. Hands-on adjustments are unnecessary. Our new CM 7000 series of analog input modules expands the range of thermocouples and RTD devices you can attach. Some of the new models even let you employ a mix of single-ended and differential inputs on a single module. Analog Output The 7021, 4021, and 4024 analog output modules supply an analog voltage or current output with 12-bit resolution. Our new CM 7024 model increases D/A resolution to 14 bits. Counter/ Frequency Input The 4080 has two 32-bit counter channels and a programmable timer for frequency measurement. Many of the CM 7000 series of DIO modules allow you to use some or all of their input channels as 16-bit counters. Digital I/O & Relay Output Several Digital I/O modules are available, with 4 to 28 digital I/O lines. The digital outputs are open-collector transistor switches — perfect for solid- state relays. Isolated digital I/O modules can monitor or control voltages to 40VDC or 250VAC directly (see charts on the next four pages for specs). Our relay output modules provide 4, 7, or 8 relay channels, which is highly useful for the direct on/off control of real-world devices. New Models Under Development If we don’t appear to have a module that fits your application’s requirements, please call us — we continue to develop new models with new capabilities to meet customer needs. & Addressable Ethernet to Remote Intelligent DAQ Line

For Comparison Charts, see pp. 158~161

Customer requests have per-suaded us to add more than 30 newCYMOD 7000 remote modular DASmodules to our lineup! Now match-ing a module to the detailed require-ments of your application is mucheasier than it ever has been.

New A/D, D/A & DIO LinesOur line of CyMOD analog input

models now includes two new8-input models, expanded thermo-couple and RTD ranges, plusexpanded strain-gauge support. There are two new analog-outputmodules with programmablepower-on values & output slopes.Twelve new digital I/O moduleshave inputs that can also be usedas 16-bit counters, outputs thatsupport up to 100mA per channel(or relays for AC power), and LEDsthat show I/O and relay status.

Ethernet, USB, & Serial ConvertersTo make use of modern

Ethernet and USB 2.0 buses, we’veadded eight new converter modules(see pg. 195). New isolated serialconverters and repeaters help youmix and match RS-232/422/485signals. You can place up to 256modules on one RS-485 twistedpair without a repeater or as manyas 2048 modules on one RS-485bus with repeaters.

CM 7188 Ethernet to serialconverter modules include one toseven RS-232 ports. In addition tocommunicating with your networkof RS-485 modules, they canassign a unique address to eachRS-232 device. That means yourPC can both send a command to aspecific RS-232 device and receivea response.

They aren’t technically CYMODmodules, but our two new Ether-net switches (pg. 19) let each con-nected device communicate at itsown speed without affecting thespeed of other attached devices.

Advanced CYMOD 7000 FeaturesSelected features of our new

CYMOD 7000 series include:

• Up to 5000VRMS isolation voltagewith additional overvoltageprotection as high as ±240V.

• Faster A/D modules that can giveyou 16 bits of resolution at 10 S/sor 12 bits at 60 or 100 S/s.

• Up to 2048 modules via CYMODconverter and repeater modules

 In normal mode, resolution is 16 bits @ 10 samples/sec. In fastmode it is 12 bits @ 60 samples/sec.

These CYMOD modules are compatible with many data acquisitionsoftware packages. They come with drivers for DASYLab® andActiveX™, plus OCX, DDE, and DLL libraries.

These modules are intended for use with four types of RTD sensors:Pt100 =0.00385, Pt100 =0.003916, Pt1000 =0.00385, andNi120. Minimum input impedance is 20 MΩ

Output voltage ranges are 0~5V, 0~10V, ±5V, ±10V. Each input can be used either as a separate 16-bit event counter or

as an input. On a given module, these lines can be used in anycombination of counters and inputs.

 These modules are intended for use with any one of seven types ofRTD sensors: Pt100 =0.00385, Pt100 =0.003916, Pt1000=0.00385, Ni120, Cu100 =0.00421, Cu100 =0.00427, andCu1000 =0.00421. Minimum input impedance: 20MΩ

Ethernet and USB Convertersto Control Your Serial Network

Now you can take advantage of the power and speed of USB andEthernet protocols without redesigning your existing serialnetworks. Our new family of CYMOD 7000 modules includes theCM 7560 series, which converts USB ports into serial ports, andthe CM 7188 series, which converts 10/Base-T Ethernet portsinto RS-232/422/485 serial ports. You can find detailed descriptionsand specifications on page 195. These modules are built for therigors of the shop or laboratory floor. They can be powered fromunregulated 10~30VDC lines, and they withstand operatingtemperatures up to 167oF (75oC).

Our CM 7561 (left)converters let you attachserial devices to USBports and also provide3000 VDC of isolation.

Our CM 7188 (right)series of Ethernet con-verters let you attachserial devices to Ethernetports anywhere in yourplant or shop floor.

New CYMOD 7000 Modules Simplify Design of DA & C Systems We’ve added more than 30 new CYMOD 7000 remote modular DAS

modules to our lineup, based on customer requests! Now, matching amodule to your application is much easier. Our line of CyMOD analoginput models now includes two new 8-input models, expanded thermo-couple and RTD ranges, plus expanded strain-gauge compatibility. There are two new analog-output modules with programmable power-on values and output slopes. Twelve new digital I/O modules haveinputs that can also be used as 16-bit counters, outputs that support upto 100 mA per channel, and LEDs that show I/O and relay status.

In addition, there are new isolated serial converters and repeatersto help you mix and match RS-232/422/485 signals. You get up to256 modules on one RS-485 bus without a repeater or as many as2048 modules on one RS-485 bus with CM 7510 repeater modules. To take advantage of Ethernet and USB buses, we have added eight newconverter modules (see pg. 195).

They aren’t technically CYMOD modules, but we also added twoDIN-mount Ethernet switches (pg. 195) with the capability to storeand forward data so that each connected device can communicate ateither 10 or 100 Mbps without affecting the speed of other attacheddevices.

Selected features of our new CYMOD 7000 series include:

• Operating temperature from –25 to +75oC (–13 to +167oF) and storage temperature from –40 to +85oC (–40 to +185oF).

• Up to 5000VRMS isolation voltage withadditional overvoltage protection ashigh as 240VRMS.

• Up to 2048 modules at distances to 4000 feet with CYMOD repeatermodules.

• Drivers for DASYLab®, and ActiveX™,plus OCX, DDE, and DLL libraries.Other drivers coming soon (see web).

• Powered from unregulated 10~30VDC.

Dual Watchdog Timers — Double Protection• Host watchdog timer: If contact is lost with the host PC, the

software-based Host Watchdog automatically sets the module’soutput lines to the safe values that you determine.

• Module watchdog timer: If the module halts, the hardware-based Module Watchdog forces the module’s output lines totheir predefined power-on values and restarts the module.

USB 24-bit DAS & 96 DIO – without opening your PC!High-Resolution USB DAS for Easy, Precise MeasurementFeaturing our highest resolution A/D converter, our 4-channel

UDAQ 0424DA is a plug-and-play USB module offering resolutionsup to 24 bits, or one part in 16,777,216. At that resolution, samplingspeed is 7.5Hz. If you need high sampling speed, select a resolution of16 bits (one part in 65,536), which gives you a sampling speed of960Hz, or choose combinations of speed & resolution in between.

The UDAQ 0424DA has four completely independent channels,so you can choose a different speed, resolution, and gain for eachchannel. In addition, you get two 16-bit analog outputs, 8 digitalinput lines and 8 digital outputs. Input lines 0 to 3 can initiateconversions on A/D channels 0 to 3; high-to-low transitions on digitalinput lines 4 to 7 can stop conversions on A/D channels 0 to 3.

All four analog inputs and both analog outputs can beautomatically calibrated via software; there are no switches orpotentiometers to set. In addition, software commands can setthe input impedance for each analog input individually.

DIO that Triggers Interrupts and Drives Solid-State RelaysOur hot-swap UDIO 96H is easy to install and isolates all 96

DIO lines from the USB bus for surges up to 500V. The software onthe facing page makes it easy to program, too.

Of the 96 total lines, 32 are dedicated digital input lines fornonclocked monitoring or control input, organized into four banksof 8 lines each. Two of these banks (16 lines) can generate interruptson change of state, so you can easily trigger the host computer totake some action. Inputs are pulled up to +5V through a 100kΩresistor. They can be “debounced” with a 5ms delay via software.

The remaining 64 lines can be software-configured as input oroutput in groups of 8. Output lines can sink 12mA — perfect forcontrolling solid-state relays. They are open-collector, with a 100kΩresistor to the internal isolated +5V source. In addition, you cansupply external +5V power to the outputs so that they retain theircurrent on/off values when the UDIO 96H module is powered down.Contact our applications department for information on usingsolid-state relays with our UDIO module.

Signal Conditioning — Getting What You Expect from Your SensorsWhen PC-based data acquisition (A/D)

boards first became available, many peopleassumed that you just plugged your PCboard into its slot, clipped on some testleads, and started taking measurements.Taking truly valid measurements can provedifficult, however. Factors such as longlead-wire distances, noisy environments, andthe types of sensors used are significant to

the quality of your data. When evaluating the validity of themeasurements taken by your data acquisition system, of primaryconsideration is the quality of the signal conditioning provided.

Traditional signal conditioning modules can add quite a bitto the cost of a data acquisition system, especially for systemswith large point counts. Many customers ask me if it is reallyworth the added expense to include signal conditioning in their DAS system. For some customers, signal conditioning isessential; for others, it is not worth the expense; and for some,it’ll be a judgment call whether they need it or not. I think thata good understanding of what signal conditioning modules dowill help you decide whether or not you need them.

What Do Signal Conditioning Modules Do?Signal conditioners take your real-world signal (which could

range from a few millivolts up to 450VAC) and transform it intoa well-mannered voltage range readable by your A/D converterboard. This can drastically improve resolution by utilizing asignificant part of your A/D board’s full-scale range. Signalconditioning modules also perform many additional functions:• Part of the signal conditioning process involves converting

differential signals to single-ended. Nearly all signals cominginto a signal conditioner will be differential, but voltagesgoing out are single-ended, sharing a common ground. In many cases, this conversion function doubles the numberof channels readable by your analog input board.

• In addition to conditioning your signal, signal conditioningmodules isolate your signal from electrical noise. Take, forinstance, one of our customers whose task was to monitor thetemperature of photocopier drums that were going through acoating process. Signal conditioning modules made itpossible for the system to accurately read a very smallthermocouple voltage while rejecting a large amount of noisefrom the galvanic process.

• Signal conditioners offer overvoltage protection. The linescarrying your signals are susceptible to picking up transientvoltages that could damage or destroy your computer.

• Signal conditioning is essential for transducers that requirevoltage or current excitation. Strain gauges, for example, require an excitation voltage to power the resistor bridgenetwork; potentiometer/resistance measurements need aknown voltage source; RTDs require a precision current source.

A/D Boards with On-Board Signal ConditioningBefore the advent of “all-in-one” remote DAS modules like our

CyMOD™ & ADAM™ series (pp. 156~161), data acquisition profes-sionals relied on analog-to-analog signal conditioners that interfacedto a data acquisition board. The board in your PC would thenperform the A/D conversion. Our intelligent data acquisition andcontrol modules have consolidated these functions. They can:• Interface with a transducer like analog signal conditioners,• Perform an A/D conversion with 16-bit accuracy, and • Transmit the data back to your PC across twisted-pair cable.

Multidrop RS-485 networks allow you to interface a very largenumber of points in this manner. Many CYMOD and ADAMmodules allow you to handle multiple points with just onemodule (unlike the 5B series signal conditioners, which requireone module per point, plus a module mounting rack).

We’ve recently added more than 30 new CYMOD 7000modules to our lineup. They include expanded thermocoupleand RTD ranges, plus expanded strain-gauge compatibility. There are two new analog-output modules with programmablepower-on values and output slopes. New digital I/O moduleshave inputs that can also be used as 16-bit counters, outputsthat support up to 100 mA per channel, and LED displays.

Speed is one area where these RS-485 signal conditioners arelimited. Conversion rates are typically only several samples persecond, so they should not replace your traditional A/D board inapplications where you need high-speed response, such asfrequency measurement. However, many of our traditionalanalog signal conditioners have low-pass filters set for 3 to 8Hz,in which case you’re not sacrificing anything to go with the newall-in-one CYMOD or ADAM-series signal conditioners.

Designed to accept a wide variety of signals, the instruNet(see page 164) allows you to place one or more units a greatdistance from your PC, and still achieve high-speed, high-accuracydata acquisition. It is a unique fusion of flexible signal condi-tioning circuitry, high-speed A/D, & remote (near-the-sensor) I/O.

Anti-Aliasing: Filter Out Sources of ErrorThe Nyquist Theorem states that an input signal should be

sampled at a rate at least twice the highest frequency compo-nent of the expected signal. For example, a 100kHz board canaccurately sample signals to 50kHz. But, if your signal has high-frequency components at or near your sampling rate, it’s possibleto read a high-frequency signal as a much lower frequency one.

On the other hand, many signals have false high-frequencycomponents, usually caused by noise on the system, which mustbe identified and eliminated, or they can distort your data.

One common way of filtering out these high-frequencycomponents is by oversampling. But using the oversamplingmethod can get expensive: you’ll need a high-performance A/Dboard, more memory, and a high-bandwidth bus.

A more economical but still effective method is to use ananti-aliasing filter. These low-pass filters only pass signalsto the A/D converter that are at or below the filter’s cutofffrequency — all higher frequencies are eliminated. For ex-ample, our PCIDAQ 3210 (see pg. 141) has an anti-aliasinglow-pass filter and 2500 VRMS of isolation built into it.

CyberResearch’s CYMOD signal conditioning modules can interface with yourtransducer, perform 16-bit A/D conversions, and transmit the data back to yourPC via a single twisted pair. Up to 128 modules can be connected to a CYMODRS-485 network, and more can be added with the use of a repeater (see pp. 156~161).

Our new DSC series of signal conditioners offers DIN-mountconvenience anywhere in your plant. Modules are powered fromunregulated 10~30 VDC, which is probably the most commonform of DC power on most plant floors — and some voltage inthat range is also available on most vehicles and ships.

Unlike the more familiar C5B signal conditioners, the DSCmodels accept a wide range of inputs. As an example, there areindividual C5B models for each of the J, K, T, E, R, S, B, C, andN type thermocouples, but the DSC TCA supports all 9 types, plus L, L2, and M thermocouples. In addition, DSC signalconditioners support several output ranges instead of just one.

Isolated Linearized 2-Wire or 3-Wire RTD Input Modules ( )

Helps You Measure More Signals with Greater AccuracyMounting Panels & Accessories

Our C5BP 01 mounting panel can holdup to sixteen signal conditioning modules.Any number and type of modules may bemixed and matched on a single rack. You caneasily rack mount the C5BP 01 panel usingour C5BP R02 rack-mount kit.

Our multiplexing panels, C5BP 02 andC5BP 06, allow you to daisy-chain up to4 panels to a single A/D board and measureyour signals one at a time. Considering thelow bandwidth (4Hz) of many C5B seriesmodules, a single A/D board can handlea very large number of points.

All of our C5BP mounting panels requirean external power supply with a minimumof 500mA of current to power up to 16 inputmodules. Our INST 1140 power supplyprovides sufficient current for most applica-tions at a fraction of the cost charged bysome 5B suppliers.

Custom-Configured CablesPut our experience to work for you!

CyberResearch will custom-configure our5BP CBL cable to interface to any of the A/Dboards we sell. This covers the broadestspectrum of boards on the market.

Convenient mounting panels let you easily expandyour system whenever you need additional points.
