Hasin Jahan's state- ment came after Shami told the media that he is ready to speak to his wife and solve the matter for the good of their daughter. Kolkata police have levelled charges under seven sections, in- cluding attempt to murder, against Shami following the com- plaint made by his wife. Shami on Sunday appealed to his wife to "patch-up for the sake of their children and family," while talking to TV channels ear- lier in the day. "I request her to get over the past and start life afresh. The past few days had been very bad for everyone. I had to even skip practice," the cricketer said. "If this matter can be solved by talking, nothing can be better than that. Only patch up will do good for us and our daughter," Shami was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. "If I have to go to Kolkata to solve the matter, I will. I am ready to talk, whenever she wants," Shami said. Asked about Shami's appeal, Jahan said, "I had been try- ing to save my family. I had tried to reason out with him for a long time." Following the controversy, Shami was excluded from the Board of Control for Cricket in In- dia's (BCCI) 26-member annual contracts system, which saw the addition of a new category. The controversy first broke when Hasin Jahan posted screenshots of his alleged 'WhatsApp' and 'Facebook Messenger' conversa- tions with multiple women on her 'Facebook' account. The cricketer, also taking to social media, claimed that her allegations were false and a conspiracy to defame him. (PTI, with agency input) India vs Sri Lanka : Toss delayed due to rain Rohit Sharma-led Team India will be looking to avenge their opening match defeat to Sri Lanka when they face the hosts for the second time in the Twenty20 International tri-na- tion series, Nidahas Trophy, at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Monday. India suffered a five-wicket loss to Sri Lanka in the first match of the tournament but bounced back strongly to outplay Bangladesh in their next match. India will be hop- ing stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma makes a return to form. Rohit has been struggling since the South Af- rica tour and was dismissed for a duck in the first match of the Nidahas Tro- phy. However, India will be buoyed by Shikhar Dhawan's brilliant run of form. The left-hander smashed 90 off just 49 balls, continuing from where he left off from the limited overs series in South Africa. The tournament is cur- rently evenly poised as all the three teams have won a game each from two outings but Sri Lanka are leading the table on net run rate ahead of India and Bangladesh. But a win on Monday would take India to the top, dislodging the Lankans. Bagan officials resign alleging 'non cooperation' from secretary KOLKATA, MARCH 12, MAR 12 /--/ City football giants Mohun Bagan club offi- cials Debashish Dutta and Srinjoy Bose on Monday stepped down from their posts alleging non-cooperation from secretary Anjan Mitra. The club's assistant secre- tary Bose and director-cum- finance sec- retary Dutta put in their papers on Mon- day afternoon and later called a media conference at the Calcutta Sports Jour- nalists' Club to announce their decision. "This is not an overnight decision. We have been thinking about it for about four years now. We have not found a solution and the situation has worsened. No one is indis- pensable," Bose told reporters. Asked whether the players would suffer due to this and with the Super Cup coming up in a few days' time, Dutta said, "The team is in safe hands with coach Shankarlal Chakraborty. "We have recently pruned the squad to 25 and they will leave for Bhubaneswar on March 19 for prac- tice. They (Anjan Mitra and his office bearers) have a lot of time left to make a champion squad for next season," he added. When contacted, Mitra said he is yet to receive anything in writing and therefore cannot react. "I've not yet got the letter. I can comment only after that. I heard they held a press conference an- nouncing their resignation," Mitra told over phone. Mohun Bagan finished third in the I-League this season collect- ing 31 points. Popovic, Roca mesmerised by Chhetri’s hat-trick BENGALURU, MAR 12 /--/ FC Pune City head coach Ranko Popovic called Sunil Chhetri "the best ever Indian player" while his Bengaluru FC counter- part, Albert Roca, was at a loss of words to define him. Bengaluru FC rode Chhetri's hat-trick to make it to the final of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2017-18 season. The India skipper's triple strike gave Bengaluru FC a facile 3-1 win in a tense second-leg semifinal at the Kanteerava Stadium yesterday. Jonatan Lucca's free- kick goal gave Pune some hope of a fightback at 1-2 but Chhetri was too good on the day and sealed the deal with a minute to go for the final whistle. "I think Sunil Chhetri is the best ever Indian player till now, and these kind of players know how to play these kind of games. He scored a hat-trick, and he was the hero to- day. The young players should learn from this," said Popovic, lauding Chhetri's standout performance on the pitch. Prais- ing Chettri's efforts in a difficult game Roca said: "What can I say about him? He's an outstanding player. There are no words to define him. This was such an important game, and he proved that he is always there when required. He is a wonderful player." After their goalless draw in Pune and the away goal dagger hanging over their head, Roca realised the importance of the game and added: "Today was a difficult game. So, it was not about Chhetri alone, he was undoubtedly brilliant, but the entire squad stood up to the challenge, it was a huge team effort." Looking ahead to the ti- tle clash on March 17, the 55-year-old Span- iard said that he was indeed happy to see his team in the final in their first ISL sea- son. "I am happy to have reached the final in our first season. The players have to put the same efforts that they have so far and give their best on the pitch. We have to win the title race, which is our last hurdle," added Roca. Gracious in defeat, Popovic too congratulated the Bengaluru team and their supporters who came out in huge numbers to support the team. "Congratula- tions to Bengaluru FC for making it to the fi- nal and also all the best to them for that match. They played well and won the game, and they deserve to play in the final which will be played here. They have fan- tastic supporters, and a fantastic atmos- phere here," added the Pune coach. (PTI) Keen tussle on cards as Chennaiyin FC meet FC Goa CHENNAI, MAR 12 /--/ Chennaiyin FC head into the second leg semifinal against FC Goa in the Indian Su- per League here tomorrow, with the advantage of having scored an away goal in the first leg, which ended 1-1. The 2015 champions start favourites to enter the final but can expect a stiff fight from the visitors, in search of a maiden ISL triumph. The Chennai team had faced FC Goa in its first league match this season at the Marina Arena and bounced back well after a nightmarish first half to nearly se- cure a draw. But a lot has happened since that game last November and the two teams have gone through ups and down to reach the play-offs. While Goa have scored the maximum number of goals (43 till the first leg of the play-offs), Chennaiyin haven't been so pro- lific in finding the net (with 25 so far). The former champions managed an away goal in the first leg on Saturday but would be aware that they could have gained a significant advantage if the forwards had not frittered away things. Also, Goa's goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani did a great job to deny the Chennaiyin strike force. Coach John Gregory would once again rely on the midfield duo of Dhanpal Ganesh and Bikramjit Singh to keep Goa's attacking players at bay. Mailson Alves and Henrique Sereno had underlined their importance with another good show and will be expected to maintain their standards in the second leg. The focus will be on Jeje Lalpekhlua, who would like to get back among the goals after fluffing a few chances in the previous game. Gregory would also expect the ex- perienced Raphael Augusto to make more attacking forays into the opposition half and build the pres- sure on the rival defence. The visiting FC Goa side will be aware that they have to score as a draw won't be enough. The prolific Ferran Corominas (the lead- ing goal-scorer with 18 so far) endured a quiet game on Saturday and the onus would be on him to lead from the front. Goa coach Sergio Lobera has advo- cated an attacking philosophy for the team, which has worked too. He would look up to Corominas to do some damage upfront and expect the midfield, ex- pected to feature Morocco's Hugo Boumous, to pro- vide the thrust. The team emerged victorious the last time it was here and will hope to win a second time to seal a spot in the March 17 final against Bengaluru FC. However, they will be up against an inspired Chennaiyin team backed by a 'sea of blue'. (PTI) South Africa beat Australia to level series PORT ELIZABETH (SOUTH AFRICA), MAR 12 /--/ Kagiso Rabada put aside his disciplinary concerns to set up a series-levelling win for South Africa on the fourth day of the second Test against Australia at St George's Park on Monday. South Africa won by six wickets after Rabada's fast bowling ensured they needed to chase a modest 101 runs for victory. The fast bowler, who faces a ban from the remaining two Tests of the series, took six for 54 as Australia were bowled out for 239 in their second innings. South Africa lost four wickets before Theunis de Bruyn hit the winning runs. AB de Villiers, whose 126 not out enabled South Africa to lead by 139 runs on the first innings, hit a quick 28 off 26 balls before he was caught at short leg off Nathan Lyon with 20 runs still needed. Rabada took the first three of the five Australian wickets that fell for the addition of 59 runs on Monday. He had match figures of 11 for 150 - the fourth time in his 28-Test career that he had ten or more wickets in a match. There was a shadow hanging over the 22-year-old fast bowler, however. He attended a disciplinary meeting convened by match referee Jeff Crowe on Sunday night after being charged with a level two offence following an incident in which his shoulder made contact with Australian captain Steve Smith on the first day. The verdict was expected to be announced after the match. If found guilty Rabada will face a two-Test ban because of previous offences on his record. Rabada was hit with a further charge on Monday, a level one offence, following a send-off of David Warner on Sunday. Rabada struck in the first over of the morning when he bowled Mitchell Marsh for 45 with a ball which swung in sharply. Pat Cummins fell to a sharp catch at gully by Theunis de Bruyn and Mitchell Starc edged a drive to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock. Lyon was caught behind off Lungi Ngidi and last man Josh Hazlewood hit a quick 17 before being caught in the deep off left-arm spin- ner Keshav Maharaj. Tim Paine was left unbeaten on 28. Lyon was brought on for the last over before lunch and with his first ball caught Dean Elgar off a leading edge as the left-handed batsman stretched forward. It was a near- replica of Elgar's dismissal to the off-spinner in the first innings of the first Test in Durban. Aiden Markram had an escape in the second over of South Africa's chase. Kohli to strike cricket's biggest endorsement deal: Astrologer NEW DELHI, MAR 12 /--/ Virat Kohli will con- tinue to set benchmark in 2018, striking an endorse- ment deal unheard of in the history of Indian sports and international cricket, apart from breaking a plethora of records, predicts a renowned astrologer. Narendra Bunde, a resident of Nagpur and a 'cricket astrologer' by profession, had "foretold" last year that Mahendra Singh Dhoni, now 36, would be playing in the 2019 World Cup in England, at a time when many questioned his place in the limited overs game. Now, he predicts Kohli will win the T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup and break Sachin Tendulkar's record of 100 international centuries by 2025. "All my past pre- dictions had been correct. I can see Virat winning the T20 and ODI World Cup by 2025 and also break Sachin's record," Bunde said. "Besides, he will also strike the biggest ever endorsement deal in cricket in 2018. You can somewhat compare this with Tendulkar's record signing with Mark Mascarenhas' Worldtel but the money involved will be obviously Kagiso Rabada rattled Mitchell Marsh's stumps early on the fourth day bigger today." In the 1990s when Tendulkar was going great guns, Mascarenhas changed the game of celeb- rity management and turned the cricket icon into a multi-millionaire. Having got his predictions right about Tendulkar's comeback from tennis elbow in- jury, his Bharat Ratna honour, Sourav Ganguly's comeback, India's World Cup triumph in 2011, Bunde says that time has come for Kohli's team to taste suc- cess abroad. India toured South Africa recently and will travel to England in the summer followed by a tour of Australia. "Kohli's Venus is very strong at the moment and that is why he will do well abroad. And I am very sure India will do really well in Australia." Bunde, who turned to predicting the future of crick- eters in 2006, was a jeweller before that. Among those who have taken his advice are Ganguly, Murali Karthik, S Sreesanth, Zaheer Khan, Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina. Even actress Preity Zinta had sought his guidance when her IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab was going through a torrid time.
