Today a high level of automationin production systems cannot beprovided without using cylinders,grippers and slides.

During the production process itis important to identify positionfeedback on these devices.Normally, position feedback is achieved using Hall effect andReed switch technology. Hallswitches, however, are polaritysensitive and Reed switches canbe unreliable due to mechanicalwear and slower response times.

ifm’s new series of magneticsensors integrates GMR and AMRtechnology: These sensors pro-vide enhanced performance in in-dustrial automation applications.

IP 69 K, ingress resistant to high-pressurecleaning.High-grade stainless steel sensors andprotection rating IP 69 K – the highestprotection rating for wet environments.

Hazardous areas.ATEX approval group II, 3D.

2-wire technology.Direct replacement of Reed switches bythe ifm 2-wire magnetic sensors. 2- and 3-wire versions with LED display and flexiblemounting options.

Polarity independent.ifm’s magnetic sensors: reliable positionsensing irrespective of magnet orienta-tion, Hall and Reed switches, in turn, arepolarity sensitive.

A GMR element ismade up of ex-tremely thin mag-netic layers, eachseparated by anon-magneticlayer. Without anexternal field theyorient in an anti-parallel manner.

If these layers areexposed to a mag-netic field, themagnetic layersorient in a parallelmanner, whichresults in a largechange inresistance.This change isconverted into aswitching signalby the internalelectronics.

An AMR elementconsists of thinferromagnetic lay-ers. Electrical resis-tance is highestwithout externalmagnetic fields.The effect of amagnetic fieldreduces resistance.This change is con-verted into a

switching signal bythe internal elec-tronics. Advan-tage: This methodenables exactmeasurement ofeven very smallchanges of themagnetic fieldwhere space isextremely limited.This results in asmaller hysteresisand a short traveldistance.

The sensor is simply insertedinto the T-slot from the topand kept in place by its self-locking mechanism. Fixing iscompleted by tightening thescrew.

Specially developed adaptersmake the T-slot cylinder sensorsuitable for all common cylindertypes. The same sensor type iseasy and quick to mount toclean-line, tie-rod, T-slot, inte-grated profile or trapezoidal slotcylinders with only one screw.

Replacement without problem:The adapters are designed sothat the switch position is main-tained when the sensors arereplaced. This memory functioneliminates the need for newadjustments.

Even when adapters are usedthe sensors keep their advan-tages: insertable from thetop, self-locking and offeringstrain relief using the screwat the housing end.

C-slot cylinder sensors

For industrialapplications

For small short-stroke cylin-ders and parallel grippers.

Two variants for reliableposition feedback.

To position and sort very smallparts in automated productionprocesses even smaller and moreprecise parallel grippers andshort-stroke cylinders aredemanded. In most cases C-slotdesigns are used.

The two variants of the C-slotcylinder sensor from ifm withGMR technology guarantee fault-free position feedback even indifficult applications. The flushversion completely disappears inthe slot and is therefore more orless protected against mechanicaldamage. The short C-slot sensorwith a length of 17.5 mm is spe-cially suited for very small cylin-ders or grippers.

Magnetic sensors

Position andspeed sensing.

ifm’s magnetic sensors are ideal forfast processes due to their high switch-ing frequency – used here for pulseevaluation by sensing a magnet on arotating shaft.

Pulse evaluation.

Application in the food industry: A barmagnet integrated into a silicone pig isdetected through the stainless steelpipe.

Pigging systems.

Magnetic sensors detect the U-tubeposition on a flow plate by sensing themagnet through stainless steel.

Flow plate.

Magnetic sensors from ifmelectronic are used for non-con-tact sensing of positions, e.g.toothed wheels and pigs. Thesensors can detect magnetsthrough materials like stainlesssteel, non-ferrous metal, alumin-ium, plastic and glass.

Due to the GMR technology themagnetic sensors feature verylong sensing ranges and highswitching frequencies.

The sensors can be supplied incylindrical and rectangular hous-ings with cable or connector andare therefore flexible in anyapplication.
