Our first game was a nail biter against the Tilford Zebras which saw us down 1-2 at half time after dominating play. We continued our attack in the 2 nd half and took control of the game to see out a 4-3 win, but this was only after one of our guys was brought down in the penalty box in which Jake Buckland slotted away the penalty superbly. Our 2 nd match prior to the holiday break was against New Town Storm. The guys dominated from the whistle and showed their superiority winning 6-2. Particularly impressive was the combination play of our younger guys from last year’s u12 who are showing that playing with the big boys in U14 does not daunt them. Bring on the next game!!! Adult Team – Cygnet Town FC The adults have now played 2 matches in the Football Federation Tasmania League 4. The first game was a win 4-3 over New Norfolk played in great spirits. Our first ever home game was last Saturday under wet cold skies at the Cygnet AFL ground. The support that turned out was fantastic and all the players could hear the support. We went up against one of the strong teams of the division – Clarence, who showed they have been playing together for quite some time. After Clarence dominated the opening stanza, we broke their back with a quality header from our own Matt Ody to see us up 1-0 going into half time. The team knuckled down for the 2 nd half to hold on to that lead and try to snatch a 2 nd goal, but with injuries, darkness, wet and foggy glasses for some of us, and an opposition continually disagreeing with everything that the ref called, we were unable to hang on and went down 1-2. One wonders if we could have held on if our key centre defense captain – Matt Evans, had not been brought down recklessly which saw him have to hobble off. Was a great game in the end and shows we are not that far away from the best in the league. Rosters At the back of the newsletter are the first 4 rounds of games for all juniors. This is the grading rounds so once these are played out, the roster for the rest of the season will be drawn up and teams will be moved around to other divisions should the results in the first 4 games warrant it.

Youth team training resume on Thursday 8th at Huonville from 6 to 7:30pm.

On the following pages are the team allocations for all players as sent out earlier this week. Please

Volunteers We need parents to volunteer to help run the club. The club can only continue to exist with numbers

on deck helping to run the club as it is too much for a small minority doing the majority. With so many

players, there must be some extra parents who can help out. We need help in the following areas at

the moment:

• Canteen Coordinators – Can be one or a group of people. Please contact me or chat with Al

Nicholas if you would like to discuss what is involved and how to do this task.

• Line marker –George and myself have measured out and marked the lines to start the season,

but going forward we need someone to keep the lines fresh each 2 or 3 weeks. This would be

only 1 hour a week to maintain the lines. Please contact me. (Again a number of people can

do this as you would then only have to do once or twice a season. And only needs doing every

2 or 3 weeks). I would go through how to do for your first marking. We also have a new line

marker to make the job even easier.

Match days – This season, if your match is the first scheduled for that pitch on match day, please arrive

early and help set the field up with other parents (nets, corner flags). It is not the coaches’ responsibility

to also set the field up and get the kids warmed up, so please help set the field up and allow the coach to get the kids ready for the game. Only takes 10 mins to set up and take down (if your game is

the last one) and really will help make the coaches day that little bit easier.

Match Reports/Game results – This season match reports by coaches will been voluntary. I will not be

seeking all match reports to make life a little easier for newsletter compilation so if you want to put a

match report in please ensure it is emailed to me by Tuesday afternoons post game.

Please ensure however that I receive the game result and goal scorers asap post games (can also be posted on our facebook page). Uniforms – If you ordered uniforms, see Janine/Roger at the coming training on Friday to collect. If you

still need to order please email Janine asap for details - [email protected]

Referees – To all those who may or will referee a game this season, it is time to do a refresher on the

rules for your age groups. Go to this link and have a read of the rules. http://www.crjsa.com/rules-and-

regulations

U12 Girls – To all parents please note that David Dow who will be helping coach the team for the

season will not be available the coming Friday for training and the first game the following day. Parents

will need to help run training and the first match day and it would also be good for parents to help

during the whole season. With the u12 girls in the 11v11 league, a squad of 16 players really needs

more than one coach!!.

Registration/Uniform payments: Please ensure you have paid registrations and for uniforms prior to

collection. Unless you have an agreement with us re payment, no one can play in the first game unless

they have paid their fees. George Wilson will send a list of who remains unpaid during the week once

he recovers from jet lag post his trip to Pictland.

We hope everyone has a great season and we look forward to hearing the Sea Dragon song at the

end of games (For new parents see the last page of this newsletter for our anthem – sung by parents

and kids at the end of a victory – or if you just feel like singing it!!!). If anyone has any question please

do not hesitate to contact me.

Bring on the first games!!

Go the Green

THE FOOTBALL RAMBLER “for the hardcore enthusiasts”

"How to introduce young players

to goalkeeper training at soccer practice"

Courtesy of David Dow (can be accessed at http://www.coaching-kids-soccer.com/goalkeeper-training.html)

What goalkeeper training is appropriate for junior players, especially 6-10 yr old's?

Whatever the coach does it should be kept very basic. If you have access to a coach that has trained goalkeepers that is a bonus otherwise check out Coerver Goalkeeping.

This program is a complete outline for goalkeepers of all ages. Young players at this age should continue to develop their foot skills as well so they are well rounded players.

No goalkeeper coach?

• Rotate your kids around and have each player take a turn in goal in a regular league game. • You run the risk of giving up goals, but the kids will learn about goal keeping. :) • Run a couple of goalkeeping practices during so the kids get a feel for the basics. • If you are playing smaller than 6v6 you don't really have to worry about goal keeping. • If you are playing 7v7 or 9v9 or more you probably have a couple of kids that like to play in

goal. • There is one danger in making a kid a goal keeper too early. The kid might change his or her

mind and want to be a field player. So, cross training is important - plus kids need to be good with their feet to play in goal anyway.

5 basic fundamentals for goalkeeper training

Catching the soccer ball

The W formation is basic way a goalkeeper catches a ball.

• Both palms turned out towards the ball. • The W is formed by the thumbs and index fingers.

Welcome position

• The players stands in the shape of a gorilla absorbing the ball as it comes to the stomach area. Once the player catches the ball the player hides the ball from the opposition.

• The ball is coming in about mid level - stomach - the player has to catch the ball. The hands have palms facing up and thumbs are facing out.

Page 8: Cygnet Sea Dragons Junior Soccer Club - 10 May 2014

Edition 2 –10 May 2014

facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CygnetSeaDragons P a g e 8 |

Staying on your feet

• Young goal keepers often show up to goalkeeper training with knee pads on which tells me that they are going to drop to their knees to scoop the ball up.

• If you can get your young keeper to move their feet and get their body behind the ball this is better technique.

Diving and rolling

• These are good techniques for young players to learn when becoming goal keepers. • The player goes down to the side and keeps his or her hands - W shape sideways - out and

shoulders square to the ball.

Goalkeeper distribution

• Distribution for young keepers is kicking and throwing. • The best way to teach young players is in small sided games. The players roll the ball out to

open players, so as to retain possession.

Page 9: Cygnet Sea Dragons Junior Soccer Club - 10 May 2014

Punting can be interesting at this age because young players need to get the technique down to be effective.

5 basic exercises for goalkeepers

Catching

The young keeper will bounce the ball on the ground and when the ball pops back up the player uses the "W" to catch the ball. The keeper should make the ball stick to his or her hands. Repeat until the kid is comfortable with the skill.

Diving

Play this fun diving game with your players in goalkeeper training...

• The coach gets the kids in pairs. • The players start on their knees 5-8 yards apart sitting up straight not back on heels. • Goalkeeper "A" rolls the ball to the side of goalkeeper "B", who goes down and gets hands out -

W sideways, body square to the ball to make the save.

Page 10: Cygnet Sea Dragons Junior Soccer Club - 10 May 2014

Edition 2 –10 May 2014

Central Region Junior Soccer Roster at http://www.crjsa.com/rosters

facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CygnetSeaDragons P a g e 10 |

Rolling balls

Teach the kids distribute the soccer ball...

• Partners 5-8 yards apart, standing position. • Partner "A" rolls the ball to "B" and the receiving player moves his or her feet and gets the body

in front of the ball, hands down and legs together. If there is a mistake the players legs cover.

Punting - kicking practice

The player will hold the ball in both hands and let it drop and step and plants the non kicking foot when the ball gets to its lowest point the player swings the leg and kicks the ball.

Coaching tip: Remember toe down and ankle locked.

Game: Goal keepers stand on the goal line and punt the ball into the net...easy way to practice kicking technique.

Learn more on striking the ball during goalkeeper training so young players can hit goal kicks.

Throwing the soccer ball

I try to have my young goalkeepers roll the soccer ball to open players so the ball is easy to control. This can be accomplished in the small sided games and helps field players because they have to learn to get open and take a touch and play soccer. I just institute a no punting rule for the young soccer goalkeepers so they have to work on distribution.

Message for All Parents (and Kids): If your child is unable to play for any reason please contact your team coach or reply to Dave Sayers

who will pass message on as if we know in time we may be able to get a player from one of the other

teams to double up and therefore we avoid playing short or having to borrow from the other team.

Telephone numbers/email of team coaches above fixtures, results and scorers – item 9.

profitable. Canteen is the Seadragons Soccer Club's biggest fundraiser so your support is

essential!

Instructions for Volunteers: What to do?

Cygnet Sea-Dragon Victory Song

Chorus:

Green is the Colour

Football is the Game

We’re all together

And winning is our aim

So cheer us on

Through the sun and the rain

For Cygnet, Cygnet is our name

Verse 1:

Here by the Huon whether rain or fine

We can shine

All the time

Home or away

Come and see us play

You’re welcome any day.

Repeat Chorus

To Finish:

What do we eat?

Seaweed

How do we eat it?

Raw
