Sewa International Together, We Serve Better Fani’s Wrath Destroyed Homes Cyclone Fani, that hit India’s east coast on May 3 with a speed of almost 200 miles per hour has claimed 60 lives in India so far. The cyclone has aected 15 million people in the states of Odisha and West Bengal and at least 3 million people have lost their homes and livelihood. The cyclone has damaged more than 500,000 houses, killed 3.4 million cattle and uprooted millions of trees. Sewa International Relief Eorts Sewa International released $10,000 for relief work right after Cyclone Fani made a landfall. Utkal Bipanna Sahayata Samiti (UBSS), Sewa’s partner on the ground is coordinating the relief and rehabilitation eorts. UBSS volunteers have been serving natural disaster victims from 1982. These centers have served freshly cooked meals to more than 100,000 cyclone victims so far. More than 2000 UBSS volunteers are working on the ground and have distributed food items such as flattened rice (chuda), lentils, cookies and baby food to the needy. UBSS is operating 15 relief shelters in Odisha and serving freshly cooked meals to thousands of people daily. UBSS is distributing seeds and saplings a to farmers and offering monetary help to fishermen to buy new or repair their damaged boats. Many UBSS volunteers helped cut branches of fallen trees immediately after Cyclone’s landfall to clear the roads for vehicle movement.

Immediate Needs

Solar lights, clothes, seedlings to help farmers prepare for the next crop season, tarpaulin, utensils, blankets, fodders for cattle and study kits for school going children are high on the list of items needed for distribution.

Essential Cloth Kit

As many people have lost their home and livelihood to cyclone, UBSS is distributing cloth kits to families. These kits contain Saree, dhoti, towels, bed sheets & mosquito nets. UBSS is also distributing tarpaulins, solar lights, mosquito repellent coils, candles, match boxes and fodders for cattle.

Farmers & Fishermen

UBSS plans to provide Rs. 100,000 and Rs. 50,000 to fishermen to buy new boats or repair broken boats and Rs. 20,000 each to 600 betel leaf farmers to buy material. UBSS also aims to repair 100 boats and give 25 new

boats to fishermen and 100,000 coconut & 10,000 betel saplings to farmers. These programs would cost about $400,000 and Sewa requests donors to help.

Rebuilding Schools

Cyclone Fani damaged many school buildings and UBSS is planning to rebuild 13 schools each at a cost of one million rupees (USD 15,000). Sewa International is requesting for donations to help rebuild schools and distribute relief materials such as food, cloth kits, solar lights, seedlings to

farmers for next crop season, fodder for cattle and study kits for school-going children.
