33rd Sunday in Ordinary TimeMatthew 25:14-30

Imagine someone who, before going abroad, summoned his servants to entrust his property to them. He gave five talents of silver to one, then two to another, and one to a third, each one according to his ability; and he went away.

•After a long time, the master of those servants returned and asked for a reckoning. The one who received five talents came with another five talents, saying: ‘Lord you have entrusted me with five talents, but see I have gained five more with them.’ The master answered, “Very well, good and faithful servant, since you have been faithful in a few things, I will entrust you with much more. Come and share the joy of your master.’•

Then the one who had two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you have entrusted me with two talents; I have two more which I have gained with them.’ The master said: “Well, good and faithful servant, since you have been faithful I a few things, I will entrust you with much more. Come and share the joy of your master.”

Finally, the one who received one talent came and said: ‘Master, I know that you are an exacting man. You reap what you have not sown and gather what you have not invested. I was afraid, so I hid your money in the ground. Here, take what is yours.’ But his master replied: ‘Wicked and worthless servant, you know that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not invested. Then you should have deposited my money in the bank, and you would have given it back to me with interest on my return.

Therefore, take the talent from him, and give it to the one who has ten. For to all those who have more, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who are unproductive, even what they have will be taken from them. As for that useless servant, throw him out into the dark where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

The first two servants used their talents wisely and increased their master's investment.

But the third servant buried the money and thus was only able to return to the master exactly the same amount he received from him.

The first two servants who invested the talents wisely were rewarded, while the third was severely criticized and punished.

Page 9: Cwts Gospels

The talents represent all the gifts God has given us. And God calls us to share these gifts with others.

Page 10: Cwts Gospels

We are made for service. God has given us talents so we can serve others with kindness and love.

Page 11: Cwts Gospels

Faithful service leads to joy. Unfaithful service leads to condemnation.

Jesus said to his disciples:"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him,he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him.

• Then the king will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

• For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’

• Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’

• And the king will say to them in reply,'Amen, I say to you, whatever you didfor one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.’

Page 18: Cwts Gospels

• Then he will say to those on his left,'Depart from me, you accursed,into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.For I was hungry and you gave me no food,I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,a stranger and you gave me no welcome,naked and you gave me no clothing,ill and in prison, and you did not care for me;

Page 19: Cwts Gospels

• Then they will answer and say,'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirstyor a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
