Carolina-Virginias Telephone Membership Association, Inc. (CVTMA)was incorporated on May 27, 1957 as a non-profit, tri-state trade associationfor the rural telephone companies in North Carolina, Virginia and WestVirginia. The mission of the association (CVTMA) is to provide education anddissemination of information to managers and directors of membercompanies.

CVTMA’s membership is comprised of the rural telephone companiesin North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, as well as businesses (associatemembers) that provide goods and services to the telecommunicationsindustry.

David S. “Scott” Sherman grew up in the northern part of rural Hardy County, WV, theyoungest of three children. His mom and dad not only raised him in the family home, but aside fromschool, most of his childhood was spent alongside his mom and dad operating the family’s countrystore. It was a country store that wasn’t a lot different from the perceptions and memories of smallrural country stores that we all share, and while he didn’t realize it at the time, he was learning a lot ofvaluable lessons and skills that have helped him throughout his life. After graduating from highschool, he completed a degree in Industrial Engineering at WVU.

From there, he set off to join the corporate world and lived in different places throughout theeast coast for a few years. However, due to his father’s untimely terminal illness, he returned backhome to Hardy County, WV to help out and takeover land that was once the family’s small farm.Fortunately the company he was working for at the time had a large manufacturing plant in the generalarea and he was able to remain employed with them in a new role. Scott decided if he was going to staythere and continue to work for his current employer, he would also revive the family farm that hadpreviously been leased out, and create some positive cash flow for the farm by starting a poultrycontract growing operation for Perdue Farms. He worked for that company for 18 years and when heleft, he was Vice President of Manufacturing with over 1800 hourly and salaried employees in 4locations across the country, but a later promotion opportunity that required him to move to acorporate office in a large city just wasn’t true to his roots and his passion for the farm and the qualityof life he had become accustomed to.

So, in 2007, he joined Hardy Telecommunications, Inc. as Asst. General Manager, and in2009, he assumed the role of General Manager and CEO and has been doing so since. Scott currentlyserves as the Chairman of the Board for CSSA and at the end of 2019, will conclude a 10 year stint withNTCA-SMC’s Board of Directors; having served the last 4 years as its chairman.

In his “spare time”, he enjoys raising his son, Adam, and farming with lots of help from familyand friends. Some time ago, he completed an 8 year stint on the Board of Governors for Eastern WestVirginia Technical and Community College, and decided to shift his focus back to another passion, BoyScouts. As an Eagle Scout, the satisfaction of seeing one’s son aspire to achieve that same scoutinggoal encouraged him to be a Cub Scout Den Leader for 5 years and is currently an Assistant ScoutMaster for Moorefield Boy Scout Troop 60. And in closing, all this would not have been, nor continue tobe, without being blessed by and ever thankful to the Good Lord above, and so in reverence to God, heis a member of Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church in Moorefield where he is currently Chairmanof the Trustees for the church.

One day he hopes to retire to just the farm to get plenty of “tractor therapy” and dirt road

time in his pickup truck with his faithful 4-legged companions as his co-pilots, but until then……………
