Team Size : 28 Amtrak -: 08/2010 - 05/2012 21 month(s) Server / Storage Consolidation & Migration Architect

Project Description: Amtrak hired IBM to consolidate the old servers in their datacenters to new virtualization environment, there are approx 740 servers with 530TB of data running on operating system Windows, Linux and AIX servers.

Nature of project is server virtualization, consolidation and migration. It involves replacing old/legacy computing systems with new one and merging small computing units with one large computing system like-for-like (means same vendor and version). This would in turn reduce the administrative, operating, licensing and operational costs for the customer while providing a more robust and scalable computing environments. It allows multiple virtual

servers, with heterogeneous operating systems to run in isolation, side-by-side on the same physical machine.

Project Contribution: As a Migration Specialist at Onsite ( USA) and was involved in all the phases of project life cycle. Study phase, Planning Phase , Designing phase and Implementation phase. I was involved in Study and Analyzing customer infrastructure for Server Consolidation , Propose the appropriate tools and techniques best suits for the customer environment from migration prospective, Understand applications residing on the servers, Study the Application dependencies, Preparing documentation( Wintel and Unix Migration Process , Cutover documents etc.) ,Used tools and techniques ( Scope, Sizing , TSD), Planning Migration Strategies with Onsite Architects Planning and Migrating Servers to the Virtualized environment.

Other than above work I prepared documentation to meet the objective of the project. Following are the documents which I used in analyzing of Servers are: reports from TADDM data collection, creation of Sizing documents, TSD Creation, Score Card. For designing the documents I prepared Amtrak initiation phase for different Waves, Unix Global Zone Grouping, Deep Dive document, MF dependency document .For Planning of Wintel and Unix Migration Strategies with Onsite Architects I prepared documents like, C&M migration planning, Unix Migration process, Cutover document for Wintel and Unix, Wave wise Cutover checklist in compilation with Amtrak visual take down. Prepared technical documents, Delivered work request to customer on time.

• Access the Hardware Management Console (HMC) to create the LPAR’s on the AIX machines.• Interviews the application teams and complete the application assessment questionnaire.• Create the migration plan to migrate the operating systems and data from the source servers and target servers.• Performed Storage Data Migration utilizing Double-Take, Softek TDMF IP, CIRUS and Nexsan SATABeast. • Take the MKSYSB backup of the Servers and install the image on target LPAR’s using NIM Server.• Perform P2V (Physical to Virtual), P2P(Physical to Physical), V2V (Virtual to Virtual) server migrations using Platespin Migrate, VMware Converter and Double-Take.• Upgrading the technology level of the AIX Operating system during the installation and configure the network parameters after installation.• Analyze the source server’s performance and decide the consolidation approach to target.• Create the Technical Solution Design documents.• Support Amtrak Datacenter Strategy and enable Datacenter Consolidation.• Migrate to common Infrastructure Architecture.• Increase utilization of server and storage hardware.• Multiple applications and operating systems can be supported within a single physical system.

• Data does not leak across virtual machines and applications can only communicate over configured network connections. • Complete virtual machine environment is saved as a single file; easy to back up, move and copy• Help the customer teams to finish the testing on new servers and provide them the after migration support.

Environment: Microsoft Windows, Redhat Linux, AIX 5.3/6.1, VIO Servers, NIM Servers, LPAR’s, Platespin Migrate, VMware Converter , Double-Take, CIRUS, NFS, IBM SVC, Softek TDMF IP and Nexsan SATABeast. Team Size: 60

AVIS -: 10/2009 - 07/2010 10 month(s) Wintel and UNIX Migration Lead

Project Description: The ultimate goal of this project is to migrate the Windows, Linux and Solaris servers and the Database data of the applications running on them from the customer’s location to the IBM data center.

I was working as Wintel and UNIX Migration Engineer and provided technical support to the project by building the target servers using Platespin Migrate, VMware Converter, FLAR from the NAS device. Project Contribution: As Wintel and UNIX Migration lead, I came up with the process, which goes like:

• Migrate the windows and Linux OS using Platespin Migrate and VMware Converter• After installing OS from FLAR on Solaris servers, • Created disk groups using VERITAS volume manager.• Created volumes on the SAN device attached to the target servers.• Created VERITAS file system on the target server and • Mounted the VERITAS file system to accommodate the database data to the respective locations using rsync tool.

RSYNC tool helps in syncing the database data from the NAS device. This is the implementation area of the system life cycle. Once we make the target server ready with OS and databases up and running on them we handover the server to other team (ITD) for further quality testing and to ensure the target server is good to give back to client.

By adhering the above process we are able to migrate the Solaris servers and data to the IBM datacenter which fulfills the client’s requirement. This process requires specialist skills of Solaris administration, Solaris Migration tools and technology like FLAR, VERITAS volume Manager, RSYNC tool for data syncing which I have from my previous projects and experience.
