RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Research Projects;

NSF-CMMI-1100742, Uddin (PI): Developing Bridge Weigh-in-Motion (B-WIM)

Health Monitoring Systems for Bridge Infrastructure Safety (Apr.2011- May-2016)

The overarching goal of the project is to enhance the current B-WIM algorithm to work for a

3D bridge model as a step to apply the algorithm for real-life cases. Further, a novel damage

detection algorithm is developed, where the algorithm uses an indirect measurement from a

passing vehicle to identify the bridge structural deterioration.

GDOT Research Project No. 14-30 Field Validation of a Drive-By Bridge Inspection

System with Wireless BWIM + NDE Devices (May.2012- Dec-2015)

The project aims to extend the previous project work by investigating the enhanced B-WIM

algorithm and drive-by damage detection algorithms, through a full scaled field test. The test

has been conducted using the developed Martlet wireless sensor network, which allows

collecting a synchronized data from the vehicle/bridge system.

NEXT-GENERATION WIRELESS BRIDGE WEIGH-IN-MOTION (WIM) SYSTEM

INTEGRATED WITH NONDESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION (NDE) CAPABILITY

FOR TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE SAFETY.

(May.2012- Dec-2014)

The project was a co-operation project between The University of Alabama at Birmingham

and Georgia Tech. UAB team task focused on developing and enhancing the existed B-WIM

algorithm. This has been done through developing a calibrated 3D Vehicle Bridge

Interaction model on LS-Dyna, then use the model measurements to validate the B-WIM

algorithm theoretically before conducting a full scaled filed test.

BRIDGE RAIL DESIGN PROCEDURES

(April.2014- Jan-2015)

The project aims to investigate the best design and geometry for the bridge concrete railing

that absorbs the maximum energy during impact without crashing. My participation in the

project was through assisting the researchers in the project to construct an LS-Dyna Finite

Element Model to simulate the crash.

CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION:

During my studies I used to develop self-coded programs in Structural Engineering Field ,

they are:

A Vehicle-Bridge Interaction algorithm based on MATLAB for investigating Health

Monitoring Technologies using indirect measurements from the instrumented vehicle.

Construct a MATLAB code to process the LS-Dyna keyword files, where a base

model is used to generate hundreds of other models with changing individual property

to make a parametric study. The code also read and arrange the simulations outputs

after running them on the Super-Computer.

A VBA program in Excel to check section subjected to moment & axial loads and

draw the Interaction Diagram for the section.

An Excel Program Used to design and give full detailed drawing in AutoCAD for

Limited and Enough Ductile Frames in High Rise Building.

A VBA program on AutoCAD to check the slope stability graphically using the

drawing capability of the AutoCAD program.

A VBA program in AutoCAD draw the Reinforcement Details of Reinforced Concrete

Slabs.

VBA program design and draw a full plan and section side view and section elevation

for Irrigation Structures.

Using the SAP program to draw an influence surface for slabs.

A VBA program in excel used to calculate the Crack Length and Crack Mouth

Opening Displacement based on Fracture Mechanics approach.
