“There has been no book of the kind that changes a generation of policy thinking. Peter Saunders’ new book, Australia’s Welfare Habit, may be just that book… whatever happens at the next election, welfare reform will be the most interesting question in serious policy for the next few years, and Saunders’ book will be the best guide to it that we can have” (Tony Rutherford, writing in The West Australian 4 August 2004)

“Peter Saunders… I’m greatly respectful of him and I think he’s a great researcher and he tosses some great ideas into the pot” (Senator Amanda Vanstone, Minister for Family & Community Services, speaking on ABC Radio National, 15 September 2003)

In my present job, I teach on week-end ‘Liberty and Society’ courses run by the Centre for Independent Studies and aimed at advanced undergraduates and postgraduates in law, philosophy and social sciences. Below are extracts from recent student evaluation forms from participants on these weekend courses:

This seemed to be the most eagerly anticipated lecture of the weekend and it did not disappoint. It proved that if you’re good enough you don’t need to jump all over the room to be entertaining. The lectures have equipped me with greater confidence to participate in debate and motivated me in pursuit of answers

I enjoyed this presentation very much. The background readings were informative, the presentation was lucid and structured and Mr. Saunders, while making a strong argument, also took time to address the counterarguments

20

Page 21: c.v.  · Web viewCURRICULUM VITAE. Name: Peter Robert SAUNDERS. Date of birth: 30 August 1950 (London) Nationality: Dual British and Australian citizenship. Current position:

Professor Saunders lecture was by far the most rewarding and thought provoking to me. He was thorough in his empirical research and presentation and built up conclusions based upon indisputable general trends. I felt that his presentation was by far the most convincing of the weekend

I enjoyed his dry analysis of such flammable social issues. During future debates I will recite many of the facts he gave during his presentation.

A thoroughly entertaining experience. His examples give a lot of food for thought on welfare concepts in this nation. It has helped crystalise some of my own opinions on social problems in our world.

Peter was an outstanding presenter – some of the statistics and facts presented were startling, all were well presented and discussed, and this was a fascinating culmination to the weekend

Peter was very charismatic in his mode of delivery particularly in his openness to participants’ questions and the way in which he addressed them. Overall I found Peter’s presentation enjoyable, lively and an excellent way in which to conclude the weekend.

I thought that Peter’s session was by far the best at the conference. What I particularly appreciated was that his sessions seemed the least ideologically driven… He presented some fairly convincing empirically-based arguments. His arguments were also very well researched

Peter’s presentation was excellent. The comprehensive manner in which he presented the information and his view of the current situation was highly effective

Peter’s presentation was open and honest with very useful statistics and policy options. It will certainly be an area which I would like to understand better in the future

I was particularly impressed by the even-handed manner in which Peter controlled the increasingly emotive debate after the break-out group stage

I enjoyed Peter’s presentation most of all – I think the information he provided us with about the welfare state and related social issues was fascinating. It is rare to hear such cogent arguments so it was wonderful to get the opportunity to hear such arguments based on hard facts

The was the most influential lecture for me in terms of changing my perspective

I found Peter Saunders’ presentations to be perhaps the most valuable to me personally because it provided information and provoked discussion about real, contemporary problems facing our government. His lectures presented real issues and allowed us to consider actual solutions, often challenging my previous ideas by supporting his perspective with notable statistics and facts. I greatly appreciated Saunders’ presentations
