GENERAL TWIN SEAL

THE EVOLUTION OF DOUBLE BLOCK & BLEED CONTINUES . . .

Cooper Cameron Valves is theworld’s leading manufacturer ofhigh-integrity, positive shutoffDouble Block & Bleed valves whichserve the following markets:pipeline, liquid bulk terminals, aviation fueling, refining, oil/gasproduction and custody transferfor the petroleum and oil and gasindustries.

The age-old “Double Block & Bleed”system (as shown above) required theuse of two valves and a spool piece.A bleed valve was used to drain thespool and verify seal integrity.

Introduced in 1941, General TwinSeal valves, were the first tomeet the rigid requirements ofDouble Block & Bleed service -more than 60 years ago.In the years since, subtle yetsignificant design refinementshave been made to improve thevalve’s performance. Superiordesign innovations, pride inmanufacturing workmanship andthe selection of the best materials, support Cooper Cameron Valves’commitment to excellence andcomplete customer satisfaction.

The General Twin Seal replaces thisantiquated two-valve system withjust one double seated bubble-tightvalve.The upstream and downstream sealprovide the same function as thetwo block valves. The body (servingas a spool piece) bleed verifies sealintegrity.

Scored seating segmentsSeal abrasion is inherent in thedesign of most ball and gate valves. In most instances, the seats areground or wedged against metalevery time the valve cycles. Anyforeign material lodged betweenthe seats and ball or gate will scorethe seating surfaces. Once theseating segment is scored, productloss and contamination results. The General Twin Seal avoidsabrasion by having bothindependent slips totally retractedfrom the body bore during cycling.

General Twin Seal’s totally retracted slip design eliminates wear, minimizes leakage risk, reduces maintenance and saves money.

Problems With Other ValvesIn meter block service, the differentialpressure across each closed valve isvery low. There is no assistance fromthe line pressure to “energize” orcompress floating seals to make themhold tight. Unless the body cavity in aball valve is vented, the seals typicallyrely on springs to press them againstthe ball. The ball valve may be leakinguntil the user opens the bleed. Thenthe reduction of the body pressureintroduces a hydraulic force on theseat that may stop the leak. The usercan form a false impression that theball valve is holding tight, when inreality, it leaks.

In contrast, the mechanical wedge-action of the General Twin Seal plugcompresses both the upstream and thedownstream seals firmly against thevalve body, needing no help from theline pressure. General Twin Seal valveshold with consistent zero-leakage.

Contamination is Avoided in Multi-Products manifolds

Multi-Product ManifoldsThe General Twin Seal positive shut-off, Double Block and Bleed valvewas developed for multi-products fuel manifolds.

Busy manifolds must be operated frequently, switching from productto product, often with power actuators and sometimes without humansupervision. Valves that can be trusted to seal drop-tight, every time, will avoid the expensive consequences of contaminated fuel.

Liquid fuels that move through pipeline manifolds are reliablysegregated by provable, zero-leakage, General Twin Seal valves.

Every General Twin Seal valve in the manifold has assured Double Blockand Bleed shut-off that proves total isolation of each product.

By using General Twin Seal valves, gasoline, diesel, kerosene, jet fuel, heating oil and LPG as well as crude oil and natural gas areprotected from contamination.

General Twin Seal Valves Work inMeter Systems...Ordinary Valves Don’t!

Meter Block Valves Hold the Keyto Accurate Measurements

Meter StationsFlow meters require calibrationto verify their accuracy. Duringmeter calibration (proving),every closed valve in the metersystem must seal drop tight.Even a small leak will causeerrors in the meter calibration.

The incorrect meter factor willpersist until the next provingoperation and incorrect flowmeasurement can cost hugesums of money!

Every General Twin Seal valve inthe meter station can be quicklyand easily shown to be holdingleak-tight. That meanscorrect calibration...every time.

Tank Storage IsolationFuel in storage tanks is exposed to the risk of contamination and lossof volume unless the tank isolation valves can be checked for zeroleakage. Tank side valves are operated frequently, but assuring tankintegrity without General Twin Seal can be troublesome and expensive.Using line blinds (or “skillet plates”) for segregation involves a long, costly and perhaps hazardous operation of drain-down, lock-out andtag-out. Traditional gate valve Double Block & Bleed will produceconstant loss of fuel from the open bleed. General Twin Seal valvesoffer simple, provable, tank-side isolation and they give absoluteassurance of valve integrity.

GENERAL TWIN SEAL

Hydrant IsolationFuel hydrants at busy airports mustbe regularly pressure tested tocheck the integrity of the pipes, flanges and gaskets. But the onlytime this inspection can beperformed is in the few hours eachnight when the airport is closed. On some occasions, sections ofthe hydrant must be isolated forextension, modification or repair.Or, it may become necessary toisolate, section by section, to findthe location of a leak. Airportsdon't have the time to drain fuelfrom the lines or to swing lineblinds for traditional line block, but the entire hydrant must beisolated and pressurized to provethat it is safe.

• They close quickly and easily.

• They require very littlemaintenance.

• They hold with zero-leakage.

The hydrant pressure-test canbegin as soon as the valves areclosed, since the General Twin Sealvalves show that the hydrant istotally isolated.

General Twin Seal valves are therecognized Hydrant Valves forairport service because:

Loading / UnloadingFuel loading/unloading mayrequire hundreds of open/closestrokes of the connection valvesevery day. The valves typicallyoperate against full pumppressure on every stroke, andthey must close without leakage.Safety and environmentalconcerns demand that the fuel isabsolutely and totally containedwithin the pipe, yet the valvesmust operate quickly and easily.General Twin Seal valves havetwo resilient seals that fullyretract from their seated positionwithout any seal rubbing…evenat full differential pressure.Plug turning is effortless ANDslam-proof!

Fuel loading hazards are eliminated

Countless loading facilities depend onGeneral Twin Seal valves for safe, reliable, zero-leakage shut-off at rail, truck and shipload manifolds. FromAlaska to Argentina; from Sidney toSicily; from New York to New Zealand, fuel movement managers havediscovered General Twin Seal valves arethe only valves they can trust to deliverreal dependability at their loadingmanifolds.

HOW THE GENERAL TWIN SEAL WORKS

GENERAL TWIN SEAL

The internal design is very simple.

Seals ( ) are permanently bonded

into the slips ( ) which aremounted on a central plug.

In the open position the slip seals

are completely out of the flow.

Turning the operator handwheel

clockwise rotates the plugassembly 90° to block flow.

During rotation, clearance ismaintained between the seal and

the valve body, allowing free

movement and avoiding abrasion.

When the operator is turnedfurther clockwise, the tapered

plug begins to lower, forcingthe slips against the bodyinitiating the verifiable seal.Because the seals never drag, the valve requires less torqueto cycle.

In the closed position, the slip

seals are expanded, compressing

the slip seals until metal-to-metal

seating is effected.Because it is mechanical, the Twin

Seal doesn’t rely on line pressure

differential to help make its seal.

It even seals in vacuum service.

B

Simple, in-line fieldmaintenance keepscosts downA big advantage of General Twin

Seal’s design is that it permits

“in-line” servicing. By simply

removing the valve bonnet or

lower plate (after the line is

depressurized and drained), all

models may be repaired from top

or bottom without removing the

valve from the line.

ELECTRIC ACTUATORS

GENERAL TWIN SEAL

General Twin Seal valves accept most commercially

available electric motor operators. All automated General Twin Seal valves require

some form of body pressure relief because of

thermal expansion (see page 13) (MBV/DTR/ABV/etc);

otherwise the valve may be difficult to open or may

stick in closed position.

The best selection of valve, gearing and motor

operator will depend on numerous factors including:

• Pipeline pressure

• Operating speed

• Environmental conditions

• Handwheel accessibility

• Available power

Selecting the correct motor is a specialist task.

Consult your General Twin Seal representative for

free technical advice.

MECHANICAL EXTENSIONS

General Twin Sealmakes both vertical andlateral extensions orcombinations of both.

In ordering, alwaysspecify dimension B or E.

Type A Extension issuitable forunderground burial.

Type C Extension shouldbe supported ifdimension E is over36 in. (900 mm).

The chainwheels have an extra deep channel inwhich the chain runs to assure that the chain willnot climb off the track.

The chain is supplied fully trimmed to eliminatebarbs, and is galvanized to withstand corrosiveconditions.

When ordering chainwheels, give size and seriesof the valve and the length of chain required.

General Twin Seal valves, both hand-operated and gear-operated, can be supplied with chainwheels tooperate elevated valves from below.

DIRECT BURIAL - UNDERGROUND

Patented General Twin Seal Extended Bonnet Valvesgreatly simplify maintenance in undergroundapplications while providing dependable DoubleBlock and Bleed shut-off.

Most underground valves are difficult to maintainand service, requiring excavation or a costly accesspit. System designers often must compromise valveplacement to overcome this maintenance problem.

With exclusive General Twin Seal Extended BonnetValves, however, the designer has the freedom toput the valves in their ideal locations. Installationcosts are minimized.

Once Extended Bonnet Valves have been installed, maintenance can be performed from above groundwithout a pit and without excavating.

Unbolting and lifting the bonnet raises the valveplug and slips to ground level. Slip replacement isquick and easy, and downtime is minimal.Once the slipshave beenreplaced, simply lowerthe assemblyback intoposition andbolt downthe bonnet.

Easy, Inexpensive Maintenance

General Twin Seal Hydraulic Extension Systems are availablefor installations where standard Type A, B, and C extensionsare not practical.

Since the self-contained Hydraulic Extension Systems aremanually-hydraulically operated, there are virtually nolimitations on length and oriented.

The hydraulic extension for gearoperators is essentially a hydrostatictransmission. The pump is driven by a handwheel, and the pressure created istransmitted to the hydraulic motormounted on the gear operator. This approach allows the systemdesigner maximum flexibility sincethe only connections between thehandwheel and valve are hydraulictubes. There is no limitation on thenumber of corners turnedbetween the valve and handwheel.

PRESSURE RELIEF SYSTEMS

A Manual Body Bleed Valve isincluded on this General Twin Seal. This bleed valve installed in thebody cavity is only opened after theGeneral Twin Seal is closed.Seal effectiveness can beimmediately evaluated. This bleed valve must be closedbefore the General Twin Seal isreopened.

The differential thermal relief systemis arranged as shown. The integralrelief valve, mounted in the upperrelief/vent manifold, routes excesspressure to the upstream throat ofthe valve. The standard relief valve isset to open at 25 psi above upstreampressure. This system functions onlywhen the valve is closed.A manual body bleed, also integrallymounted in the upper relief/ventmanifold, is opened only to ventand verify seal integrity. An isolation valve installed in theupstream throat tap is also includedin this system. It must be left opento permit the relief system to relievepressure upstream.

The Safety Block/DTR functionsexactly as the basic Safety Bleed. However, all working componentsare housed in a virtuallyindestructible compact carbon steelmanifold. The benefits of thisincident control equipment are:fire safety, complete componentaccess for maintenance purposes, all socket welded joints, heavy wallpipe and total incident control.

To satisfy the requirements of API 6D, a pressure relief device must be provided on all double

block and bleed valves in liquid service.

When the General Twin Seal valve is seated and completely filled with liquid, any slightvariation in temperature due to the sun’s rays or ambient thermal fluctuations will causedrastic changes in body cavity pressure resulting from thermal expansion.

Valves filled with fuel oil in a laboratory setting have exhibited a 75 psi increase in pressurewith a temperature rise of only 1°F. While results may vary under actual service conditions(depending on media, pressure vessel rigidity and presence of entrained gas), it is known thatdangerously high pressures will build up in liquid filled, positive shut-off valves.

The General Twin Seal in liquid service must always be installed with a pressure relief device.
