Work programme:

- The TBM tunnel with excavation and segment lining, commenced in February 2008, finished in May 2009.

Project description:

- The TBM tunnel with HERRENKNECHT Earth Pressure Balance Type TBM (shield 6.120 mm diameter):

Total length 3.300m, including ca. 1.500m marine crossing section.

The first tunnel in the world between two continents.

The Bosphorus Tunnel is to provide the connection between Asia and Europe across the Bosphorus channel enabling

the water from the Melen River to be transferred to Istanbul. The tunnel is approximately 5.6 km in length and is

located ca. 15 km to the north of Istanbul.

The Asian section is constructed by drill&blast, roadheader and other mechanical methods.

The European incline and underwater sections are to be excavated by a fully shielded closed (or open) mode TBM.

TBM tunnel is rising (looking from Asian site) at a nominal 0.184% minimum gradient under the Bosphorus Channel.

The tunnel rises at a gradient of approximately 7.439% towards the European side.

The early average temperature is +13.6 °C. The average lowest soil temperature at the ground surface is +9.1 °C.

Grouting activities:

Annulus grouting behind the lining with multi-component mortar (cement, water, fly ash, sand and

additives). Low pressure back filling.

Annulus grouting means the initial grouting to fill the void between a precast concrete segmental lining and

the surrounding rock.

Proof grouting performed after annulus grouting in the case of voids discovered behind tunnel lining

(cement based grout – moderate pressure back filling).

Proof grouting means pressure grouting to fill the void between a precast concrete segmental lining and the

surrounding rock and which is carried out after annulus grouting.

Cut-off membranes performed after annulus- and proof grouting to prevent rest-water ingress along the

lining to the cutter head compartment in the inclined section of the tunnel.

Grouting executed with OMG (organo-mineral grout/foam).

Pre-grouting (with OPC and/or MC, and 2-component PU) to prevent:

1. Large inflow of water to occur at tunnel face which may drown tunnel.

2. Cave-in of tunnel face which may cause long stop to boring.

3. Flowing ground to take place at face which can probably drown the tunnel.

4. Moderate inflow to occur which can hamper TBM loading system.

The actual drilling pattern is 11 horizontal drilling holes (practically within excavation profile) or 6 holes in

conventional 7.5º umbrella.

The ground along the Bosporus tunnel consist of sandstone, mudstone, limestone (partially karstic) with zones of

diabase, fractures, faults of various degrees with possible hydrostatic pressure of ground waters up to 1.4 MPa.

According to the contract pre-grouting is represented as:

(a) "Fissure grouting", which means grouting works undertaken to control ground water

inflows into the Works or for ground strengthening purposes using patterns of grouted

holes, including ahead of the face being excavated, either tunnels or shafts.

(b) “Ground Stabilisation Grouting”, which means grouting works undertaken for the safe

progress of the tunnel or shaft Works.

Bentonite, cementitious or chemical grouts are to be used as the nature of the ground to

be treated and the purpose of the grouting dictates.

Other types of grouting:

(c) "Cavity grouting", which means grouting to fill any voids at rock/concrete interfaces

around structures (other than precast concrete segmental linings).

(d) "Consolidation grouting", which means the injection of grout into fissured rock around

tunnel linings.

(e) "Cut-off grouting" where used on the drawings means consolidation grouting carried

out in specific locations around tunnel linings to depths greater than the standard

consolidation grouting fans.

(f) "Contact grouting", which means grouting to fill any voids at steel/concrete interfaces.
