CURRICULUM VITAE FILIP RAES JUNE 21 2018 PHOTO © SASKIA VANDERSTICHELE SHORT INTRO Filip Raes (°1977) is Professor of Clinical Psychology at KU Leuven, Belgium. With depression being his main research expertise, he has more than 15 years of experience in both basic and applied research in experimental psychopathology. His basic work includes experimental, lab-based studies and longitudinal studies examining cognitive vulnerability processes in the context of depression, both in healthy and patient samples. Major lines of research here are biased memory functioning and disturbed affective processing such as in rumination on negative affect, and dampening and avoidance of positive affect, or – more generally – repetitive negative thinking. His applied work includes the development of empirically-driven treatment innovations designed to remediate psychological vulnerability mechanisms in the treatment of emotional disorders (e.g. Memory Specificity Training, MeST), and clinical trials (incl. RCTs) testing the efficacy and effectiveness of (transdiagnostic) psychological interventions and their impact on underlying vulnerability processes. He is the author of more than 130 international peer-reviewed scientific articles that have been cited over 7,000 times, according to Google Scholar. His current h-index is 39. Additionally, he has authored more than 250 (inter)national conference presentations. Dr Raes places great emphasis on societal engagement and science communication. In 2017, for example, he received the sole Honourable Mention for the Society Award of the Humanities Group of KU Leuven for his research showing the potential of mindfulness- based training programmes and for his science communication efforts and his impact on the public debate on the phenomenon and hype of mindfulness. He frequently disseminates research findings to a broader non-expert audience, both through traditional and social media, as well as the creative medium of art. He teaches courses on psychological treatments and advanced skills in psychological communication, and coordinates a lectures course on the societal impact of psychology, linking research and theory to practice and vice versa. Dr Raes is the coordinator of the first KU Leuven Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), covering topics in e-psychology. He is a also guest lecturer in the Postgraduate Training programmes in Behaviour Therapy at both KU Leuven and UGent. Dr Raes is a trained clinical psychologist and cognitive behaviour therapist. He has an active clinical practice where he takes a special interest in adult patients suffering from depression (and comorbid anxiety), paying particular attention to disturbed memory functioning and anhedonia. He also supervises junior clinicians and (starting) psychotherapists. On a personal note, Filip lives in Kapellen, Belgium, together with his partner Dinska Van Gucht and their two children Zanna (°2010) and Vince (°2012). He loves to sing but his main hobby is genealogy and family history research.
