COURSE DESCRIPTION: This module provides an opportunity to develop skills in the use and understanding of relevant literature and in both quantitative and qualitative statistical methods. The student will learn how to evaluate and contribute to the scientific literature and to interpret and disseminate scientific information. Also, will appreciate the desirable properties of research design and be able to select an experimental design appropriate to a given system and create a design matrix. In addition, the student will learn how to assess the kinds of scientific data and tests of hypotheses and will be able to select, apply, and interpret the output from statistical methods of data analysis, and to evaluate the results of statistical analyses as applied to a given data set. Using a research area complementary to the chosen Master’s specialism, the student will develop skills in systematic searching, summary writing, critical analysis and scientific communication of the underpinning primary research.

- Course Co-Instructor for AP0708: Applied Sciences Research Project, Department of Applied Sciences, Northumbria University, UK (2017-2019)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This module provides students a vehicle for developing, refining and applying their research skills in an independent project. Guided by a staff member, students plan, carry out and report the outcomes of an independent research project to professional standards. Students identify stakeholders in their research and describe the projected impact their research holds for them. In order to prepare them for life as a research professional, assessments emulate authentic professional documentary formats aimed at securing project resources and disseminating their findings to ensure they develop real world impact.

- Course Co-Instructor for AP0606: Biomedical and Biological Sciences Research Project, Department of Applied Sciences, Northumbria University, UK (2017-2019)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This module enables students to engage in a research project and to present their evaluation of the relevant primary literature and their own findings in a written report. Laboratory and/or computer-based work will provide the students with the appropriate practical skills and independent and directed learning will be used to facilitate literature evaluation. Assessment strategies will take the form of a supervisor’s report, oral presentation and a final report. Students will receive weekly oral feedback from their supervisors within laboratory/tutorial sessions. Supervisors will review one written draft of the reports prior to submission.

- Course Co-Instructor for AP0609: Advanced Analytical Techniques (20 credits), Department of Applied Sciences, Northumbria University, UK (2018-2019)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This module explores essential advanced analytical techniques relevant to the practice of modern Biomedical Sciences. Students will learn about the scientific principles underpinning these methodologies and also how they are applied to both medical diagnostics and to research. They will gain an understanding of genetic engineering strategies and purification of recombinant proteins for analysis. In addition, they will also learn about advanced separation techniques such as flow cytometry and Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) as well as automated enzyme analysis. Students will also gain an insight into cutting edge technologies such as next generation sequencing and microarray technologies in the context of both RNA (transcriptomics), protein (proteomics) and small molecules (metabolomics). In addition to learning the theoretical aspects and gaining hands-on laboratory experience in these techniques, students will learn to evaluate, compare and make sound evidence-based choices regarding analytical approach and experimental design that will prove a key skill in their future career.

- Course Co-Instructor for BS0608: Scientific Literature Review, Department of Applied Sciences, Northumbria University, UK (2017-2018)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This module provides an opportunity for students to investigate the literature on a topic of their own choice, selected under guidance from their supervisor, and to present their evaluation of the literature orally and in a written report. Independent and directed learning is used to facilitate literature evaluation. Assessment strategies take the form of an oral presentation and a final report. Students receive oral feedback from their supervisors within small group tutorial sessions. Supervisors review one written draft of the reports prior to submission.

- Course Co-Instructor for BF0607: Investigative Biology, Department of Applied Sciences, Northumbria University, UK (2017-2018)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this module, students are assigned to groups and each group is then assigned a member of staff to act as tutor for a group topic. At the start of the module all students engage in a group work seminar. Tutors advise groups on possible topics, then each group discusses and agrees on a broad topic area, taking into consideration the interests and motivation of each group member and arriving at a consensus. The group must then work together to produce a portfolio on the agreed topic. Within the portfolio, each member of the group contributes a specific chapter dealing with a particular aspect of the topic. Again, the tutor gives advice/confirm that each chapter is appropriate for the module/assessment. i.e. there is a lot of flexibility in both group topic and individual chapter titles, and both must be negotiated between the group members and then confirmed with the group tutor.
