I am currently consulting in the field of quality. One of my biggest clients is AquAmanzi. AquAmanziis a consortium of Jeffares and Green Parkman/ Stocks/ Bateman Water who has been formed toundertake a water supply program in KwaZulu Natal. The task is to set up a system for programassurance and to do project quality assurance plans as per contract requirements. The projectsinclude the development of the capacity in the local community to manage and operate the watersupply as well as designing, building and operating these water supply schemes.

Cementation Africa

1996 – 1999 : Quality Assurance Manager, Cemenco Foundry

I was responsible for all aspects of quality. I developed a Quality Manual, which was audited andfound to comply to ISO 9002 by a consultant. I wrote numerous work instructions and operatingprocedures.I developed a computerised database for tracking castings, a quality cost system and a correctiveaction system, and a quality improvement project on areas of high scrap that reduced the failure costby 33%I supervised the inspection staff, set quality standards and liaised with customers and suppliers onquality matters. I maintained control of welding processes, non-destructive testing operations, sandmixing, melting, casting, heat treatment and finishing operations. I developed and implementedseveral quality plans to customers’ requirements and produced data books.In the roll of plant metallurgist, I maintained metallurgical control and was responsible for thechemical and physical quality of the metal, which included metallographic evaluation as well asdestructive testing. I specified specialised materials and developed a high strength ware resistantmaterial for extrusion dies. I developed metallurgical control procedures and melting practices.

1996 – 1996 : Quality Assurance Manager, Cementation Engineering

I was responsible for all aspects of quality. I developed a Quality Manual, several quality plans anda computerised corrective action system.I supervised the inspection staff, set quality standards and liaised with customers and suppliers onquality matters.

1994 – 1996 : Group Quality Assurance Engineer, Cementation Africa

Although there was no group quality organisation, I was employed as a trouble-shooter to beassigned wherever required. I was involved with the following projects

The MAG 7 shotgun at Techno Arms, where I was responsible for the optimisation of this newdesign, setting up quality standards, finalising the drawings and tolerances, defining materials,setting up quality systems and quality controls.

I developed a full technical manual including work instructions and inspection instructions,computerised parts lists, production tracking, design qualification tests and the functionalcharacteristics of the weapon.I managed the quality control of the weapon including, supplier quality control, in process control,final inspection, testing and proofing and liaison on quality standards.

Eight holding furnaces for the Richards bay smelter project at Efco Furnaces. I was calledin to sort out the quality plans, pipework and the small parts. I was involved in the installation onsite and with negotiations with the customer on quality matters as well as the technical manualsfor submission to the customer.

Two mill bodies for the Loeshe project for Cementation Engineering. I was involved with thequality planning and control of the fabrication and machining of these mills, and for liaison withthe customer on quality matters.

South African Breweries

1992 - 1993 : Quality Assurance Manager Northern Transvaal

I was responsible for the total quality function at the brewery as well as quality in trade;I implemented two successful quality improvement projects. I was involved in many team problemsolving exercises as part of the continuous improvement project.I managed the chemical lab; the microbiological lab, the packaging lab and the taste room andimplemented a computerized information system to track the results.I was involved in the total management of the brewery including, union meetings and strikecontingency planning, budgetary and goal setting and represented the brewery on the groupcommittees for both computerization and quality system development. I was responsible for a traineeon the training program.I was involved with the quality aspects of the conversion to plastic crates, including supplier qualitycontrol, and in the pilot study in the use of pre-isomerizes hops in beer production

Telcast Engineering Works

1990 – 1991 : Quality assurance manager

I was responsible for the total quality function at Telcast, a high technology foundry, linked to AtlasAircraft Corporation.I revised the quality manual to comply with the ISO 9002 requirements and implemented acomputerized quality information system, to predict the scrap costs and eliminate them this programsaved the company over R2 million per annum.I was involved with quality planning, trials, setting acceptance standards and for customer liaison on.I was responsible for all inspection activities including,, X ray, dye penitent, magnetic particle and forscrap review to determine disposition, cause and corrective action.I put the whole company through a two-day quality-training course including one day of statistics anddiagnostic tools.

Protea Chemical Manufacturing

1989 – 1990 : Group Quality Assurance Manager

I was responsible for the total quality assurance function of the four companies that comprised thisgroup, both for consumer and industrial products and for the training department.I implemented a Zero Defect program and was involved in companywide goal setting for all aspectsof quality. I was involved in quality improvement projects in; warehousing and distribution, Tele sales,consumer product labeling, production scheduling, JIT and storage and kiting.I liaised with both consumer and industrial customers on quality problems, conducted quality auditsand identified opportunities for improvement.

1988 – 1989 : Internal Quality Consultant, Naschem

I was responsible for the total quality assurance function at Naschem in an advisory capacity butspecifically for defining the policy, auditing the system and maintaining the quality record system.I participated in group problem solving exercises, including new product development and processdevelopment problems and consulted on statistics and sampling plans and other quality relatedmatters.

1986 – 1988 : Quality Assurance Manager, Naschem

I was responsible for the total quality assurance function at Naschem including the quality system,auditing the quality system, the quality information system and quality engineering. The qualitysystem, to the requirements of ISO 9001, satisfied Armscor’s auditors.I developed and maintained a total quality cost system to Armscor requirements, and wasresponsible for issuing the quality report and reviewing it with top management.I implemented systems of quality planning using fault tree analysis and failure mode and criticalityanalysis. I developed sampling plans and process controls to guard against critical failures of safetycritical assemblies and sub assemblies.

I developed and maintained a total quality information system. I audited the implementation of themanual and obtained corrective action on any deviations from requirement.I assisted suppliers to implement quality systems and process controls and was sometimesseconded to them to sort out particular problems such as inability to supply on schedule or highquality costs.I trained and developed quality engineers and I conducted companywide training on quality systemrequirements.

I audited the implementation of the manual and requested corrective action on any deviations fromrequirement. I led a team who monitored and audited product quality and process controls. I liaisedwith Naschem on quality related matters and developed and implemented a corrective action system.I witnessed and conducted inspection and test activities. I monitored suppliers as well as theassembly plant.I trained and developed quality assurance representatives.

1977 – 1980 : Quality Assurance Representative, Armscor (Rep. in Israel)

I audited the quality system and requested corrective action on any deviations from requirement. Iconducted product and process audits on a multimillion-dollar contract. I liaised with the IsraeliMilitary Industry on quality related matters. I witnessed and conducted inspection and test activitiesand released product for shipment and monitored deliveries.

I led a team who conducted system audits and pre-award audits on actual and potential suppliers. Itrained and developed my team of auditors to become an efficient and successful.

Ireviewed quality plans, procedures, work instructions, inspection instructions and drawings and datapacks. 1977 – 1980 Armscor (Rep. in Israel) Ammunition production Quality Assurance Representative/ I audited the quality system and requested corrective action on any deviations from requirement. I conducted product and process audits on a multimillion-dollar contract. I liaised with the Israeli Military Industry on quality related matters. I witnessed and conducted inspection and test activities and released product for shipment and monitored deliveries.

1981 – 1982 Armscor Ammunition production Manager QA Site Office at Naschem/ I audited the implementation of the manual and requested corrective action on any deviations from requirement. I led a team who monitored and audited product quality and process controls. I liaised with Naschem on quality related matters and developed and implemented a corrective action system. I witnessed and conducted inspection and test activities. I monitored suppliers as well as the assembly plant. I trained and developed quality assurance representatives.

1983 – 1986 Naschem Ammunition production Section Manager, Quality Assurance/ I developed and maintained a total quality information system. I audited the implementation of the manual and obtained corrective action on any deviations from requirement. I assisted suppliers to implement quality systems and process controls and was sometimes seconded to them to sort out particular problems such as inability to supply on schedule or high quality costs. I trained and developed quality engineers and I conducted companywide training on quality system requirements.

1986 – 1988 Naschem Ammunition production Quality Assurance Manager/ I was responsible for the total quality assurance function at Naschem including the quality system, auditing the quality system, the quality information system and quality engineering. The quality system, to the requirements of ISO 9001, satisfied Armscor’s auditors. I developed and maintained a total quality cost system to Armscor requirements, and was responsible for issuing the quality report and reviewing it with top management. I implemented systems of quality planning using fault tree analysis and failure mode and criticality analysis. I developed sampling plans and process controls to guard against critical failures of safety critical assemblies and sub assemblies.

1988 – 1989 Naschem Ammunition production Internal Quality Consultant/ I was responsible for the total quality assurance function at Naschem in an advisory capacity but specifically for defining the policy, auditing the system and maintaining the quality record system. I participated in group problem solving exercises, including new product development and process development problems and consulted on statistics and sampling plans and other quality related matters.

1989 – 1990 Protea Chemical Manufacturing

Paint, Adhesives and Teflon products

Group Quality Assurance Manager/ I was responsible for the total quality assurance function of the four companies that comprised this group, both for consumer and industrial products and for the training department.I implemented a Zero Defect program and was involved in companywide goal setting for all aspects of quality. I was involved in quality improvement projects in; warehousing and distribution, Tele sales, consumer product labeling, production scheduling, JIT and storage and kiting. I liaised with both consumer and industrial customers on quality problems, conducted quality audits and identified opportunities for improvement.

1990 – 1991 Telcast Engineering Works High tech investment castings for the aircraft industry and

Quality assurance manager/ I was responsible for the total quality function at Telcast, a high technology foundry, linked to Atlas Aircraft Corporation. I revised the quality manual to comply with the ISO 9002

commercial, aluminum dye castings and aluminum and magnesium sand costings for helicopters and military vehicles

requirements and implemented a computerized quality information system, to predict the scrap costs and eliminate them this program saved the company over R2 million per annum. I was involved with quality planning, trials, setting acceptance standards and for customer liaison on. I was responsible for all inspection activities including X ray, dye penitent, magnetic particle and for scrap review to determine disposition, cause and corrective action. I put the whole company through a two-day quality-training course including one day of statistics and diagnostic tools.

1992 - 1993 South African Breweries, Northern Transvaal

Brewing and packaging of beer Quality Assurance Manager/ I was responsible for the total quality function at the brewery as well as quality in trade. I implemented two successful quality improvement projects. I was involved in many team problem solving exercises as part of the continuous improvement project. I managed the chemical lab, the microbiological lab, the packaging lab and the taste room and implemented a computerized information system to track the results. I was involved in the total management of the brewery including, union meetings and strike contingency planning, budgetary and goal setting and represented the brewery on the group committees for both computerization and quality system development. I was responsible for a trainee on the training program. I was involved with the quality aspects of the conversion to plastic crates, including supplier quality control, and in the pilot study in the use of pre-isomerizes hops in beer production

1994 – 1996 Cementation Engineering

Group Quality Assurance Engineer/ Although there was no group quality organisation, I was employed as a trouble-shooter to be assigned wherever required. I was involved with the following projects ▪ The MAG 7 shotgun at Techno Arms, where I was responsible for the optimisation of this new

design, setting up quality standards, finalising the drawings and tolerances, defining materials, setting up quality systems and quality controls. I developed a full technical manual including work instructions and inspection instructions, computerised parts lists, production tracking, design qualification tests and the functional characteristics of the weapon. I managed the quality control of the weapon including, supplier quality control, in process control, final inspection, testing and proofing and liaison on quality standards.

▪ Eight holding furnaces for the Richards bay smelter project at Efco Furnaces. I was called in to sort

out the quality plans, pipework and the small parts. I was involved in the installation on site and with negotiations with the customer on quality matters as well as the technical manuals for submission to the customer.

▪ Two mill bodies for the Loeshe project for Cementation Engineering. I was involved with the quality

planning and control of the fabrication and machining of these mills, and for liaison with the customer on quality matters.

1996 – 1996 Cementation Engineering

Quality Assurance Manager/ I was responsible for all aspects of quality. I developed a Quality Manual, several quality plans and a computerised corrective action system. I supervised the inspection staff, set quality standards and liaised with customers and suppliers on quality matters.

1996 – 1999 Cemenco Foundry Resin and greensand castings in SG iron, grey iron and steel.

Quality Assurance Manager/ I was responsible for all aspects of quality. I developed a Quality Manual, which was audited and found to comply to ISO 9002 by a consultant. I wrote numerous work instructions and operating procedures. I developed a computerised database for tracking castings, a quality cost

system and a corrective action system, and a quality improvement project on areas of high scrap that reduced the failure cost by 33%. I supervised the inspection staff, set quality standards and liaised with customers and suppliers on quality matters. I maintained control of welding processes, non-destructive testing operations, sand mixing, melting, casting, heat treatment and finishing operations. I developed and implemented several quality plans to customers’ requirements and produced data books. In the roll of plant metallurgist, I maintained metallurgical control and was responsible for the chemical and physical quality of the metal, which included metallographic evaluation as well as destructive testing. I specified specialised materials and developed a high strength ware resistant material for extrusion dies. I developed metallurgical control procedures and melting practices.

Consulting to AquAmansi a consortium constructing water supply projects

AquAmanzi. AquAmanzi is a consortium of Jeffares and Green Parkman/ Stocks/ Bateman Water which has been formed to undertake a water supply program in KwaZulu Natal. The task was to set up a system for program assurance and to do project quality assurance plans as per contract requirements. The projects included the development of the capacity in the local community to manage and operate the water supply as well as designing, building and operating these water supply schemes.

I was a member of South African Association of Civil Engineers’ Quality committee while they were implementing their Quality Management System before they changed to South African Institution of Civil Engineering

I was an active member of ISO/TC 176/SC 2 WG24 from mid-2013 until after the 2015 version of ISO 9001 was released.
