Mark Smith
Industrial Design Student
Final year student with an excellent progressive academic record who is a diligent and dedicated individual; confident in taking on leadership and managerial roles. He is happy to work outside of a job role, if he believes he has the relevant knowledge and skills that would prove beneficial
to that particular task. He takes a hands on approach to solving issues as they arise, but where possible prefers to plan in advance, taking into consideration the issues that may arise.
Core modules have evolved my practical design skills and knowledge, before putting me into a position of working alongside high profile companies, such as Lacoste. For this project I was part of team working to create new footwear that encompassed the Lacoste brand. I was key to analysing market research and influential in developing technical aspects of the end concept. At the delivery of the project, I was the front man in successfully presenting the work to company; my presentation backed by personal built up knowledge of our concept and the research that backed it.
In the creation of a new product or idea, I get under the skin of a market area to engage and understand it. This leads to the creation of a much better and well thought out product that properly benefits the consumer. I have learnt to think about the whole situation around a problem, rather then jump at the most direct solution. In-depth, expansive research is key to developing a good solution. Analysing multiple different options allows for a considered thought approach. My practical design skills allow me to visualise my design process and ideas to others.

Took on Senior Instructor position in 2014, overseeing the daily running of the surf school ensuring that customers were attended to and instructors knew their lessons schedule. Across four seasons I have found that good communication, good teamwork and the ability to access a situation, think, plan and respond quickly to it, are key. I have also developed the ability to keep calm and clear headed in an intensive or emergency situation. Designed graphical posters and adverts for company events and for local advertisement. Used company sales knowledge to promote surf lessons with an aim of booking clients into a surf lesson or up selling to booking a block of lessons.
Through teaching ability and overall customer service, attained a high customer satisfaction rating demonstrated through the levels of repeat and word of mouth business. Taught lessons to clients, presenting in a method that was engaging, and meant that they learnt the important safety points and the core techniques for surfing.Ensured the safety and wellbeing of both clients and other surf instructors in the water, adapting the lesson plan to the clients and the conditions.
My personal skills were developed in aiding all aspects of the business, not just within my job description, as a way of helping generate solutions to my colleagues problems. Worked with guidance from the senior designer, aiding her with new product development for the company.
Liaised with manufacturers to tweak designs to improve the finished product. Undertook the opportunity to engage my own design thinking and ideation with the purpose of creating new products for the company.
One key skill was the ability to rapidly develop good working relationships with each team member and promote an overall positive team spirit. Led a team of fifteen volunteers during Northumbria Welcome Week (Freshers Week)
Organised the delegation of individual roles depending on the tasks the team was assigned as well as managing the general welfare of my team.
Role was highly important to the university, as it was about selling the university to the student and demonstrating what it could offer to prospective students. Informed prospective open day students and their parents about the Design
for Industry course and general university life in Newcastle upon Tyne.Welcomed prospective students, who were attending interviews, providing them with informative tours of the Design School and answering their questions
Used knowledge of applied sales techniques to engage students at the fresher’s fair, proven successful through 30 membership sign up.Led workshop sessions aimed at improving the confidence of members, encouraging them to present in front of the supportive society environment
First university society of its kind in the country to undertake English Speaking Board examsDistinction at English Speaking Board Level 3 - Grade 08: Graded Examination in Speech: Communication (Spoken Presentations Skills).
Knowledge of Apple and Windows operating systems. Computer aided design skills in Adobe Creative Suite CS6: Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign and Solidworks 2014, Rhino 5, Keyshot Rendering and Autodesk Showcase.
Army NCO Corporal and platoon leader within Repton School Combined Cadet Force Full UK drivers license with nil penalty points.

Research showed a rapid increase in the use of smartphone cameras in recent years, coupled with consumer desire to upload to social media. One of the main problems of camera phones is their inability to take good long
range photos, due to lack of a zoom lens, yet the user is unwilling to pay the expense of solving this problem.
RSA - Collaborative Consumption
Payment is made into a slot on the stem. A step provides access for children. The lens and step rotate 360 degrees
10 lenses in sequence provide brilliant optical zoom
The camera plate moves that different sized smartphones can be rested on the plate, and their camera’s align with the lens
My solution: a fixed optical zoom lens that allows the smartphone user to take a better photo, and an app that works in conjunction with the Zoom lens, that also provides some other additional features
Zoom Stand App
This standard feature allows the user to adjust certain features of the app.
Beneficial to local business around a Zoom Stand, this feature allows a user to see what other things to see and do are around them.
The user can view previously taken photos, which they can tweak, apply filters and upload to social media.
Feature incase the user should not know what a button function does within the app.

In App Help
The focal point of the app, this is used in conjunction with the Zoom Stand. The app would adjust the image seen through the Zoom Stand, adjusting the image sensor and flipping the image, which will project through the Zoom Stand upside down.
In the view, the user can point their phone at the landmark and surrounding area or a skyline. The app will register the view and allow the user to tap particular places of interest within said view. Using AR technology the app will then inform the user about what they are looking at through on screen text and graphics.
One World Trade Centre(Freedom Tower)Height: 1,776 Feet (541m)
The primary building of the new World Trade Center complex and stands on the north west corner of the original site, in the footprint of 6 World Trade Centre.Designed by archietect David Child, the foot height of the building is symbolic as it references the year of the Declaration of Independence. The building will be made open to the public in early 2014.
A visitor to Battery Park, New York, uses the Zoom Stand to take a better photo of the Statue of Liberty and then use the nearby attraction feature to find a restaurant nearby
The user selects restaurant and the results are displayed by distance with each result given a star rating.
