10. List of most relevant publications This selection is based on the impact of the publications and their relevance on my research trajectory. 1. Direct observation of magnetic metastability in individual iron nanoparticles A. Balan, P. M. Derlet, A. Fraile Rodríguez, J. Bansmann, R. Yanes, U. Nowak, A. Kleibert, and F. Nolting Phys. Rev. Lett. (2014) 112, 1072011
Combining X-ray photoemission electron microscopy with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism we demonstrate that Fe nanoparticles can with sizes ranging from 20 down to 8 nm possess metastable magnetic properties that are significantly different from those derived from the properties of bulk Fe. Rather than all particles in the investigated size range exhibiting the expected superparamagnetism, a significant proportion of the Fe nanoparticles demonstrate FM behaviour. This FM proportion is characterized by uniaxial magnetization dynamics. The altered magnetic properties are attributed to metastable structurally excited states of the particles which can spontaneously relax to a lower-energy state that exhibits the anticipated SPM behavior. The coexistence of SPM and FM particles with the same size demonstrates that simple scaling of magnetic properties may not reflect the behavior of a nanoparticle ensemble even when monodisperse, noninteracting samples are studied. The uniaxial magnetization dynamics in the FM particles indicate magnetic bistability, a property that is relevant for appli- cations, such as magnetic data storage. Thus, searching for ways to stabilize nonequilibrium structures made from soft-magnetic materials such as Fe might provide an interesting alternative to nanoparticles with ground state properties of hard-magnetic bulk alloys. 2. Size-Dependent Spin Structures in Iron Nanoparticles A. Fraile Rodríguez, A. Kleibert, J. Bansmann, A. Voitkans, L. J. Heyderman, and F. Nolting Phys. Rev. Lett. (2010) 104, 127201 *** Times cited: 30. Impact factor: 7.4
Increasing experimental capabilities based on resonant soft X-ray absorption revealed many novel phenomena in nano-sized magnets. The combination of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism with photoemission electron microscopy enables element-specific vector magnetometry with single particle sensitivity. We have discovered a size-dependent transition from exchange to magnetic anisotropy energy dominated coupling of iron nanoparticles to a ferromagnetic support. Numerical calculations reveal a spin-spiral structure in the particles above a critical size of about 6 nm. This demonstrates that unexpected spin arrangements at nanoscale interfaces can result from the balance between the particle-substrate interaction and the individual properties of the particles. These findings are not only important for fundamental research, but also relevant for the development of novel devices which make use of nanoscale magnetic phenomena at interfaces. 3. Real space observation of emergent magnetic monopoles and associated Dirac strings in artificial kagome spin ice E. Mengotti, L. J. Heyderman, A. Fraile Rodríguez, F. Nolting, R.V. Hu ̈gli, and H. B. Braun Nature Physics (2011) 7, 68 *** Cover of the Nature Physics issue. Times cited: 127. Impact factor: 19.4
We demonstrate the existence of emergent magnetic monopoles in a quasi-infinite nanomagnet array. In an applied magnetic field, monopole-antimonopole pairs nucleate and separate in an avalanche-type manner along one-dimensional Dirac strings consisting of overturned dipoles, and the behaviour can be quantitatively explained by Monte Carlo simulations. With careful modification of the shape of particular islands it is possible to control both where the nucleation of monopole-antimonopole pair occurs and where the monopoles are brought to a stop. This work on artificial spin systems opens the way to making use of the multiple states in coupled nanomagnet systems and to the controlled manipulation of magnetic charges that may lead to novel spintronic devices.

4. Near-Edge X-Ray Absorption Fine-Structure Investigation of Graphene D. Pacilé, M. Papagno, A. Fraile Rodríguez, M. Grioni, L. Papagno, Ç.Ö. Girit, J. C. Meyer, G. E. Begtrup, and A. Zettl, Phys. Rev. Lett. (2008) 101, 066806 *** Times Cited: 101, Impact factor: 7.4
Graphene (a single layer of graphite) is an exciting new material with very peculiar electronic properties resulting from the fact that the charge carriers obey a linear dispersion relation, thus mimicking massless relativistic particles, and opens new perspectives for a wide range of applications, from nanoelectronics to single-molecules gas detectors. In this work we reported the near-edge x-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS) spectrum of graphene obtained by micromechanical cleavage of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite on a SiO2 substrate. We used photoemission electron microscopy in UHV conditions to separately study single-, double-, and few- layers (FLG) graphene samples. We observed for the first time the predicted (and much debated) interlayer state in graphene. The laterally-resolved NEXAFS data illustrate the rapid evolution of the electronic states from those of a truly two-dimensional system, towards those of bulk graphite. 5. Electric-field control of local ferromagnetism using a magnetoelectric multiferroic Y-H. Chu, L. W. Martin, M. B. Holcomb, M. Gajek, S-J. Han, Q. He, N. Balke, C-H. Yang, D. Lee, W. Hu, Q. Zhan, P-L. Yang, A. Fraile Rodríguez, A. Scholl, S. X. Wang, R. Ramesh Nature Materials (2008) 7, 478 (Corrigendum : Nature Materials (2008) 7,678) *** Times Cited: 633, Impact factor: 35.7
Magnetoelectric multiferroics—materials that simultaneously show some form of magnetic and ferroelectric order— are of fundamental interest and technologically exciting because they raise the possibility of electrical control of magnetism in novel devices. Here we developed a heterostructure device consisting of a CoFe film in intimate contact with the room-temperature multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO). By combining piezo-force microscopy and photoemission electron microscopy (based on x-ray circular dichroism contrast at the cobalt L-edge) we discovered a one-to-one mapping of the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic domains, mediated by the collinear coupling between the magnetization in the ferromagnet and the projection of the antiferromagnetic order in the multiferroic. On application of an electric field to the underlying BFO layer, we observed that the average magnetization direction in the ferromagnet rotates by 90°. On switching the BFO once again, the average magnetization direction changes back to the original state, thus suggesting for the first time the ability to control ferromagnetism with electric fields.
