2. Follow the main path. It goes uphill a little and then bears round to the left. The path then rises gently acrossthe moorland. There are good views of Bamford Edge and Win Hill.

3. At (B), GR – SK197873, about 2kms from the bridge, there is a junction of paths. Our route takes the rightmostpath here, that is the one going uphill.

Our route now follows the path along Derwent Edge, gradually rising, for about 4km. There is a path crossingthe edge path at GR – SK203880. Go straight across this.

There are good views of the reservoirs below and named rock formations to pass. These include ‘The WheelStones’ that are also known as ‘The Coach and Horses’ and the ‘Cakes of Bread’.

Eventually the white trig point on Back Tor, known in our family as ’The White Lady’, comes into view.Although this is slightly beyond where our route leaves the edge it is worth a visit for the views from it. Thereare plenty of rocks to provide a seat for a refreshment break.

4. Return along the edge path to (C), GR – SK197907, where a stone pillar marks a junction of paths. Take thepath leading away from the reservoir, that is turn left if returning from Back Tor.

Follow the clearly marked path that becomes a track and then a paved road, known as Foulstone Road. Itreaches a gate onto Mortimer Road at Strines Bridge. Turn left along the road, crossing the bridge, here. Thereis no footpath so take care. Stay on the road for about 750 metres.

5. At GR – SK227908, there is a track to the right, following a Public Bridleway. Take this track.

Stay on the track as it winds round to reach a house, (D), GR – SK230906, at the end of the dam for StrinesReservoir.

Turn right, towards the dam, as soon as you pass the house and look for a paved footpath on the left with agreen Public footpath sign. Take this path and follow it over the stile into the woods beyond.

6. Follow the path across two bridges and continue on the permissive path beside the reservoir. [There is a path tothe right between the two bridges. This is not our route.]

There is a dam at the end of the reservoir. There is also a memorial – to those who lost their lives in the 1864disaster when the original dam of Dale Dike Reservoir gave way. Go through the waymarked gate to the left.

7. Follow the path, that becomes a track, round to the road at (E), GR – SK245920. Our route does not take thetrack that zig-zags down below the dam.

Turn right along the road and then, in about 10 metres, turn left along a public bridleway. The bridleway crossesmoorland, passing two white posts marking gas pipes, and reaches a gate to a narrow footpath beside a field.

There is a road at the end of the footpath. Turn right onto this road and, when it forks, take the right fork, nowgoing downhill. After about 500 metres, just after passing a deserted outdoor centre, look for a footpath intoWindy Bank Wood on the left. This is (F), GR – SK248927.

Follow this footpath, down over a bridge and through the woods.

Shortly after the path passes a place with a seat, bird feeders and ‘nature’ notice board, it turns right andbecomes a track alongside Agden Reservoir – the reservoir is on your right and gradually getting wider. At GR– SK258927 the track meets a road. Turn right onto this road and follow it for about 500 metres as it windspast the reservoir.

8. At (G), GR – SK262927, there is a path to the left. Take this path and very shortly after, take the right handfork at the waymarked post. The path follows a stream up the hill. At the top of the hill it crosses a stile ontoa track. Turn right onto the track.

The track becomes a path that goes through a gate and up a hill. Part way up the path turns right alongside afence. There are good views across the reservoir and up to Derwent Edge.

Continue through the woods along the path.

Just before the wall where the path leaves the wood, there is the remains of a Motte and Bailey Castle to theleft, not much more than a mound. Follow the path that bears left and goes past the graveyard and throughthe church grounds. (Our route does not take the path downhill to Low Bradfield). After passing the fifteenthcentury church our route emerges onto the road at High Bradfield. The bus stop, GR – SK268924 is by thejunction beyond the pub. This is (H) and the end of the walk.
