Product Line Description

Cutler-Hammer Molded Case CircuitBreakers are designed to provide circuitprotection for low voltage distributionsystems. They are described by NEMAas, . . . a device for closing and inter-rupting a circuit between separablecontacts under both normal andabnormal conditions, and furthermore

as, . . . a breaker assembled as anintegral unit in a supporting andenclosing housing of insulatingmaterial. The NEC describes them as,A device designed to open and closea circuit by non-automatic means, andto open the circuit automatically on apredetermined overload of current,without injury to itself when properlyapplied within its rating.

So designed, Cutler-Hammer circuitbreakers protect conductors againstoverloads and conductors and con-nected apparatus, such as motors andmotor starters, against short circuits.

In low voltage distribution systems,there are many varied applicationsof molded case circuit breakers.Cutler-Hammer offers the mostcomprehensive family of moldedcase circuit breakers in the industry.

Special Calibration

Special non-UL-listed calibrationsare available for certain ambienttemperatures other than 40C and forfrequencies other than 50/60 Hz or DC.Reduced interrupting ratings will applyfor 400 Hz applications. Maximumthermal calibration is limited to 135Aat 400 Hz.

50C Calibration

Add suffix V to Catalog Number for

complete breaker, listed above, whenordering listed ampere ratings forbreakers to be used in 50C ambients.

Moisture-Fungus Treatment

All circuit breaker cases are moldedfrom glass-polyester which does notsupport the growth of fungus. Anyparts which are susceptible to thegrowth of fungus will require specialtreatment.

Freeze-Tested Circuit BreakersThe circuit breakers may be orderedwith freeze testing. This option usesspecial lubrication and mechanicaloperation is verified at -40C.

Marine Applications

F-Frame circuit breakers can be sup-plied to meet the following marinespecifications:

s U.S. Coast Guard CFR 46 ABS American Bureau of ShippingIEEE 45

These specifications generally requiremolded case circuit breakers to besupplied with 50C ambient calibration,special nameplating, and plug-inadapter kits. When plug-in adapter kitsare used, no terminals need be supplied.

Circuit breakers can also be suppliedto meet UL489 Supplement SA(Marine Use) and UL489 SupplementSB (Naval Use).

UL489 Supplement SA applies to vesselsover 65 feet in length. Requirementsinclude 40C ambient calibration, spe-cial labeling, and no use of aluminumconductors or terminals.

UL 489 Supplement SB requires 50Cambient calibration, vibration testings,special nameplating and no use ofaluminum conductors or terminals.
