CUTGroup 8 – Waitbot App

In-person on March 12, 2014; Remote Test

Overview:

For our Civic User Testing session, we tested the Waitbot app, a place where you can find wait times

for things such as transit, restaurants, airports, emergency medical and more.

Target Group:

CUTGroup members who either have an iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Chicago residents from different areas of Chicago who generally use public transportation

A selection of testers that had varied responses to these questions:

o After this test, would you be willing to use the app and answer follow-up questions to

give us feedback?

o Can you bring your Android or iOS device to this test?

o If so, which type of device do you plan to bring?

o Do you use public transportation on a daily basis?

o Approximately, how many apps do you have on your device?

Test Type:

In-person test for 10-20 participants

Since some testers could not come to the in-person test due to a combination of weather and

distance we decided to reach out to a few more testers to do the test remotely

Proctors asked a variety of questions:

o “Yes” or “no” questions to gather quantitative results

o Open-ended questions to see what users were interested in doing

o Leading questions are asked so users will visit specific areas of the website and respond

with their experience

Questions:

What makes users download an app? Delete an app?

Do users want to use Waitbot on a daily basis? Why or why not?

What features do users want? How can Waitbot be improved?

What other wait categories would users want to see?

Do users want to share on social media?

CUTGroup 8 – Waitbot App

In-person on March 12, 2014; Remote Test

Results:

6 testers tested the Waitbot app in-person, while 4 additional testers tested it remotely. Testers

labeled #1-6 were in-person testers, while testers #7-10 tested the app remotely.

Below are some key highlights for each question.

Note: 1 tester, I Like to Laugh (#7) could not get the app to load or work on his HTC One

Android phone. Therefore, some questions will only notate 9 responses.

Which device are you using for this test?

60% (6) – Android Device

30% (3) – iPhone

10% (1) – iPad

0% - Android Tablet

Which of these statements is most accurate?

90% (9) – “This device is my primary device when I am away from another device & on the go”

10% (1) – “This device is my primary device to connect to the Internet”

0% – “I do not use this device often to connect to the Internet”

Do you use any Web sites or apps to check wait times?

90% (9) – Yes

10% (1) – No

If so, which ones do you use?

These are the apps that were mentioned and the amount of times they were mentioned:

(3) – Transit Tracks

(3) – CTA Bus Tracker

(2) – Transit Stop

(1) – Google Maps

(1) – Transit Times

(1) – Be-on-the-road

In general, what makes you decide whether or not to download an app?

Here are the top reasons that our testers mentioned and the amount of times they were mentioned:

(5) – Routine use, ease of use of app

(3) – Price/if it’s free

(3) – Recommendations or reviews

Did you allow the app to use your current location?

89% (8) – Yes

11% (1) - No

Why or why not? [re: current location]

2

CUTGroup 8 – Waitbot App

In-person on March 12, 2014; Remote Test

4 testers said that the app did not ask them about location.

After opening the app, review the first ("Transit departures") page.

4 testers mentioned that they liked that it populated with transit options nearby, but a few testers

pointed out that all of this information might be confusing.

My eyes are dried out (#10) and Student (#8) thinks it is convenient to not have to

program routes into the app, and that it pre-populates. My eyes are dried out (#10) is

concerned that “the information overload might turn me off in the future, the flipside, it is nice

to know all of the routes available to me.”

4 testers mentioned the color scheme on this page. 3 out of these 4 testers found some confusion in

the color-coding, while 1 tester (I like Cacti, #4) thought the colors made sense.

CTA Pace Taker (#2) thought green meant a longer time than red before the bus came.

Travels to school & work everyday by bus and train (#3) and Waiting Time (#9) both

thought that the color was coordinated to the type of bus or train line not the wait time.

Does this Transit Departures Page serve your needs?

78% (7) – Yes

22% (2) – No

Why or why not?

Here are responses from testers who said “Yes,” testers like:

Finding wait times of buses and trains near them

Starring/Favorite routes

“Nice user interface”

Here are some responses from testers who said “No”:

I like Cacti (#4) believes it “doesn’t provide immediate benefit over CTA Bus Tracker.”

Intolerant impatient Person (#6) believes that it is good at giving immediate wait times for

transit coming soon, but does not give enough time into the future to use as a planning tool.

Are there any ways it can be improved?

Here are the top things testers wanted to see improved, and the amount of times they were mentioned:

(2) Better color coding

(1) Show both directions of travel/route

(1) Better directions to stops

(1) Favorites tab

(1) Condense information

Explore the site. What's the next thing you do?

3

Page 4: CUTGroup #8 - Waitbot Final Report

CUTGroup 8 – Waitbot App

In-person on March 12, 2014; Remote Test

20% (2) – Clicked “Map”

20% (2) – Clicked “Add wait”

10% (1) – Clicked “Restaurants”

10% (1) – Clicked “Public Transit”

10% (1) – Clicked “Airports”

10% (1) – Other: Moved map area to see where else could go

10% (1) – Other: Refreshed then clicked “List”

10% (1) – App would not load

These results show that there is not a single course of action, and testers are not drawn to do one thing

over another.

Tell us more about the first thing you did.

Here are some responses from a tester that clicked “Map:”

Works in fruit company (#1) was hoping to see bus locations on map but can't tell if it's

buses or bus stops nearby. Works in fruit company and Waiting Time (#9) both want to

see a map of routes.

Here are some responses from a tester that clicked “Add wait:”

Travels to school & work everyday by bus and train (#3) and Very resourceful,

spontaneous, unconventional who loves dark rooms (#5) were both curious about this

function and was not sure what it did.

Go to the list menu and choose "Restaurants" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at

both the list and map views.

5 out of 10 testers (50%) did not find reports of wait times for restaurants. 2 of these 5 testers

tested the app remotely in their own neighborhood.

I like Cacti (#4) said it was not immediately obvious what “no report” means because there

isn’t a context.

Student (#8) said a lot of nearby restaurants were missing and the “no report” made it feel

useless.

Here are some other responses:

Travels to school & work everyday by bus and train (#3) liked seeing wait times for

restaurants but wants to search through map view and have restaurants repopulate.

Waiting time (#9) also likes this function, but feels that map view is too messy “especially

with the no report stuff.”

Will learning about a restaurant's wait time impact your future choices?

67% (6) – Yes

33% (3) – No

4

Page 5: CUTGroup #8 - Waitbot Final Report

CUTGroup 8 – Waitbot App

In-person on March 12, 2014; Remote Test

Why or why not?

Here are some responses from testers who said “Yes:”

Very resourceful, spontaneous, unconventional who loves dark rooms (#5) says she

goes “Somewhere quick, somewhere close, somewhere convenient.”

Waiting time (#9) believes that a lower wait time increases his likelihood to patronize the

restaurant.

Here are some responses from testers who said “No:”

Travels to school & work everyday by bus and train (#3) bases his decisions on reviews,

and not wait times.

My eyes are dried out (#10) did not see restaurants on the app, “But I have Yelp and

Foursquare to do that for me.”

Go to the list menu and choose "Airports" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both

the list and map views.

Here are some responses from testers:

When Works in fruit company (#1) opened up this page and zoomed out on the map view,

the app crashed. He believes that the list view is better because it did not crash, and was easy to

see. Works in fruit company (#1) continued to click on “Getting there” text, but it did not

do anything.

I like Cacti (#4) thinks this seems useful, but when he clicked on the wait time, he expected

more details instead of the “Add a wait time” ability.

Intolerant impatient Person (#6) says “The checkpoint thing is not descriptive enough

because when you to the airport, how do you know which line you’re going to?”

Go to the list menu and choose "Emergency Medical" and tell us about this experience. Take a

look at both the list and map views.

Most testers did not find this page as useful as the others due to the fact that this would rely

heavily on the type of emergency and distance, not just the wait time. 2 testers were confused

about the colors, and 1 tester thought the color was connected to the CTA line that the

hospital is on.

Here are some responses from testers:

Very resourceful, spontaneous, unconventional who loves dark rooms (#5) think that

knowing these wait times is important, and says “I wish I had this when I was pregnant.”

Intolerant impatient Person (#6) states that if there is a medical emergency, and she

needed a place to go, there is more to consider than distance including insurance. Intolerant

impatient Person thinks there is too much information missing.

Which page did you find most useful?

5

Page 6: CUTGroup #8 - Waitbot Final Report

CUTGroup 8 – Waitbot App

In-person on March 12, 2014; Remote Test

78% (7) – Transit

11% (1) – Restaurants

11% (1) – Airports

0% - Medical

Any reason?

The majority of testers thought that the Transit page was the most useful because testers

thought they would use it more frequently than the other pages.

Very resourceful, spontaneous, unconventional who loves dark rooms (#5) chose

“Airports” because she could not find this information anywhere else.

I like Cacti (#4) chose “Restaurants” because he was interested in getting into a restaurant

quickly.

Which page did you find least useful?

33% (3) – Restaurants

33% (3) – Airports

33% (3) – Medical

0 % - Transit

Any reason?

2 out of 3 testers who found restaurants to be the least useful thought so because there was

not enough restaurant information in the app.

Testers who chose “Emergency Medical” as the least useful believed if they needed a medical

facility they would “just go”

Testers who chose “airports” would not rely on wait time information to decide when to leave

for the airport.

Which view did you find most useful?

78% (7) – List view

11% (1) – Map view

11% (1) – Other: no preference

Any reason?

The majority of testers liked the list view because it gave more information than the map view.

Some testers thought the map view was too cluttered or “not smooth.”

(1) – Movies

(1) – Gas stations

Click and explore the "Add wait" option and tell us about this experience.

4 out of 9 testers (44%) did not clearly understand what this feature would be used for.

1 additional tester, My eyes are dried out (#10), saw this option as only for “participating

establishments” to use, not necessarily residents.

I like Cacti (#4) said that it was not obvious that “it’s just restaurants. I was on Emergency

Medical and click ‘add wait time.’ It gave me a restaurant wait time screen.”

3 out of 9 testers said that it seems easy to use, or was straight-forward.

Waiting time (#9) loves the idea that he can post or add wait times to an establishment he

visited.

Would you want to add a wait time?

67% (6) – Yes

33% (3) – No

Under what circumstances would you want to add a wait time? Or why wouldn't you want to

add a wait time?

Here are some responses:

I like Cacti (#4) would add wait time “if there’s enough data and it’s actually helping people.

When I am at a restaurant and the line is really long, it’s a way to complain about it.”

Impatient intolerant person (#6) would not add the wait time, but thinks that the hostess

or someone at the restaurant should add the time.

Student (#8) would not add wait times because she believes a wait time has a lot of variables

contributing to it, “and this app doesn’t take those other variables into account.

Would you want to share wait time information on social media?

33% (3) – Yes

67% (6) – No

Why or why not?

7

Page 8: CUTGroup #8 - Waitbot Final Report

CUTGroup 8 – Waitbot App

In-person on March 12, 2014; Remote Test

Very resourceful, spontaneous, unconventional who loves dark rooms (#5) would

share on Facebook only if app was connected automatically with her Facebook.

Works in fruit company (#1) says he would not do it consistently unless there was an

incentive.

I like Cacti (#4) would not share on Facebook because he does not think his friends would

care.

Will you use the app again, on your own?

67% (6) – Yes

33% (3) – No

Why or why not?

Here are some responses from testers who said “Yes”:

Works in fruit company (#1) likes the “favorites” feature and likes that all of the transit

features are in one app.

Waiting time (#9) thinks he will use it again “mostly to get transit time and now for weekend

breakfast/brunch decision making.”

Here are response from a tester who said “No”:

Student (#8) doesn’t think the app is very well organized and did not give her information on

any of the other tabs she used. (Note: Student tested this app remotely in her own

neighborhood)

My eyes are dried out (#10) says “I want to use the transit portion for a bit, but all the other

features are useless. But I see this to be a major battery suck and don't think I will keep it on my

cell for long.”

Do you like the Waitbot app?

67% (6) – Yes

33% (3) - No

Here are some responses from testers who said “Yes”:

Travels to school & work everyday by bus and train (#3), I Like Cacti (#4), and Very

resourceful, spontaneous, unconventional who loves dark rooms (#5) thought they

would use this app again because it is in an interesting concept. Travels to school & work

looks forward to the “coming soon” establishments.

Here is a response from a tester who said “No”:

My eyes are dried out (#10) says, “The Swiss army knife is useful and practical. Then the

imposters ‘improved’ on it, making it bigger and more cluttered with useless features.

Sometimes I feel app creators want to entice a large crowd, instead of just perfecting one good

thing.”

In what ways would you improve this app to serve your needs?

3 testers mentioned that they wanted to see more information and details for each of the

different pages.

2 testers wanted a more streamlined design and to cut out “useless stuff.”

Regarding the design of the map, 1 tester thought it would be good to brighten the colors, and

another thought that a compass should be included on the map

2 testers wanted a more customizable experience. 1 of these testers was interested in adding

routes to the map that he uses often, while the other tester was interested in adding or

subtracting the categories she wants to use

Follow-up Questions

A couple of weeks after the in-person test, we reached out with some follow-up questions to the in-

person testers to see if they used the Waitbot app in their own neighborhood. We received responses

from 4 out of 6 testers who tested the app.

Here are some responses we gathered in the formal question format and informally.

Have you used Waitbot since our CUTGroup test?

75% (3) – “Yes”

25% (1) – “No”

During the in-person test, Very resourceful, spontaneous, unconventional who loves

dark rooms (#5) thought she would use the Waitbot app again. After the test, she e-mailed

and said “I couldn’t use the Waitbot app beyond Chicago jurisdiction for using public

transportation… It’s easier/practical going straight to the source (Google).

If so, how have you used the app? If you haven't used it, why not?

2 out of the 3 testers who used the app used it for the transit part. Works in fruit company

(#1) liked to use the app to see what stops are closest. 1 tester used it to see if any restaurants

were listed in her neighborhood.

If you have the chance, try Waitbot next time you use public transportation. Was it easy to use?

67% (2) – Yes

33% (1) – No

Why or why not?

Travels to school & work everyday by bus and train (#3) said “Yes” because it showed

nearby locations and wait times were mostly accurate.

Intolerant impatient Person (#6) did not use it for transportation.

Check a local restaurant's wait times. Did you like the information you found?

0% - Yes

100% (3) – No

Why or why not?

Intolerant impatient person (#6) said that there weren’t restaurants around her, and

Travels to school & work everyday by bus and train (#3) wrote that he “didn’t see the

info as particularly useful.

In what ways would you improve this app to serve your needs?

10

Page 11: CUTGroup #8 - Waitbot Final Report

Works in fruit company (#1) stated that “When I would use the option to see what was

near me, it would show things in a weird order.” He wanted it to show him what is going to

arrive the fastest.

Travels to school & work everyday by bus and train (#3) looks forward to the upcoming

features such as nightlife and government services.

Intolerant impatient Person (#6) wants more facilities to be included in her neighborhood.

App Problems for I Like to Laugh (#7)

1 tester, I Like to Laugh (#7), had trouble loading the app. He was using a HTC One Android phone.

We wrote an e-mail asking for more information about his experience. This was his response with a

screenshot:

This is what it looks like. Either like this or with the spinning loading icon or it says "Error

loading page". Also I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it still didn’t work.

Conclusions

What makes users download an app? Delete an app?

5 out of 10 testers mentioned that they would download or keep an app if they routinely used it and if it

was easy to use. Other considerations included whether it was a low-cost or free, and if it had good

recommendations or reviews from others.

Do users want to use Waitbot on a daily basis? Why or why not?

67% of testers (6) liked the Waitbot app and said they would use the app again after the test. Testers

who did not like the app did not have many options populate for them and did not think they would use

all of the features.

78% of testers (7) found the Transit page the most useful. In terms of using it on a daily basis, this

seems to be a key component of users wanting to use Waitbot on a daily basis.

What features do users want? How can Waitbot be improved?

Only 1 tester liked the Map view option over the List view. The majority of testers liked the list

view because it gave more information and was better organized than the map view. It was in

general easier to use

There was confusion regarding the color coding and what the colors meant in terms of wait

time. 1 tester thought that the color referred to the CTA line.

Testers are interested in seeing more details and information for each page. In addition, besides

the Transit page, testers did not have many options and a lot of places had “No report.” Testers

were not immediately aware what this referred to

What other wait categories would users want to see?

Of the categories “Coming Soon,” the top categories testers were interested in included:

Government Services

Tourist Attractions

Barber Shop

Nightlife

Other categories, testers wanted to see included:

DMV

Grocery Store lines

Movies

Gas Stations

Do users want to share on social media?

12

Page 13: CUTGroup #8 - Waitbot Final Report

CUTGroup 8 – Waitbot App

In-person on March 12, 2014; Remote Test

Most testers were not interested in sharing this type of information on social media. One tester would

share on Facebook only if it was automatically connected, while another tester said he would not do it

unless there was an incentive. Only 3 testers would share on social media.

Both directions to travel/specify, knowing route and which directions it is going Explore the site. What's the next thing you do? Clicked "Map"

Tell us more about the first thing you did.

Was hoping to show buses on map but can't tell if it's buses or stops near by. Likes a "reverse" symbol. Would like to have a map of routes.

Go to the list menu and choose "Restaurants" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. GPS based and can't see what restaurants are until you click them. In order to clear screen you have to redo search every time. Will learning about a restaurant's wait time impact your future choices? Yes

Why or why not?

It relies on people using their own time, people have to be included and involved and sharing for it to work. You want to know what it's like now, not a half hour ago.

Go to the list menu and choose "Airports" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. Didn't know what it was providing wait times for, you might check out of curiosity, crashed while zooming out of the app and brought back to airports list. Likes list view better because it didn't crash and easy to see. Thinks it's a cool feature. Clicked on getting there icons and nothing happened. Go to the list menu and choose "Emergency Medical" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. Likes the google map view because it allows you to know how to get there directly. Icon that says call. Which page did you find most useful? Transit

Any reason?

Because he would use frequently.

Which page did you find least useful? Airports

Any reason?

Doesn't live close enough to airports and relies on personal time rather than app information.

Which view did you find most useful? List view

Any reason?

Likes the ability to go back and forth and would like to see where the bus is instead of the bus stops, like CTA bus tracker and a map of where the route goes.

Follow-up Questions

Have you used Waitbot since our CUTGroup test?

Yes

If so, how have you used the app? If you haven't used it, why not? I have used the transit part of it - mainly the 'what's near me' option using the GPS to see what stops are closest and to see how minutes away things were. I used this when I was in areas that I didn't have 'favorites' on my other transit app I use.

If you have the chance, try Waitbot next time you use public transportation. Was

it easy to use?

Yes

Why or why not?

Check a local restaurant's wait times. Did you like the information you found?

No

Why or why not?

In what ways would you improve this app to serve your needs? When I would use the option to see what was near me, it would show things in a weird order - it wouldn't show things that were the closest to arriving - maybe it was going northbound first and then southbound? It seemed like it should show me what is about to arrive the fastest...

Review of the app:

After opening the app, review the first ("Transit departures") page. Notices wait time and directions of buses in the list page. The colors look off like green has long time than red. Scrolled to bottom to see metra ... Likes how it has all the areas and seems more realible than others because it shows the time. Star/ favorite function isn't explained. Says would use it for work for family functions to be on time. Didn't notice the buttons as the bottom for map view. Likes the map view with the photo and address bc she's more of a visual person. Go to the list menu and choose "Airports" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. Getting there by car seems more appealing than by train bc the wait time is less and want to get to the plane on time. Thinks the security wait times is cool but wishes it had a number of people there or how long it would take to get through the line. Clicked on t1 and sees that there is a place to put in a wait time and is looking at adding the sliding time and can add a comment. Would want someone to text her if there was and update. Would skip adding time herself. Would find it beneficial if someone texted her before leaving if wait in security line is long so she will leave earlier if needed. Review of the app:

After opening the app, review the first ("Transit departures") page. App would not load on my device. Used ipad provided by the CUTGRoup instead. Interesting. It's not exactly obvious immediately what's going on because the stop names are very small compared to the entries. Cannot tell where the stop is, directionally. The colors make sense. Would be nice if I could get the time it takes to walk to the site. Otherwise, seems pretty useful. Would be better to to filter by direction. CTA Bus Tracker can do this. Picked it because it was the thing I can do now (as opposed to hospital)

Go to the list menu and choose "Restaurants" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. It's not immediately obvious what "no report" means. No context. Odd, because it doesn't mean anything to me. Also: only lists five (lots of empty-- should load more). Showing type of restaurant would be good, too. Getting content from Yelp would help. Will learning about a restaurant's wait time impact your future choices? Yes

Why or why not?

If it has a 45 minute wait time, I'm not going to go there.

Go to the list menu and choose "Airports" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. Seems useful. When I click on the wait time, I would expect more details. Instead, it gives me the ability to add a wait time. A map of the airport wold be helpful. Otherwise, seems useful. Is this an app for just Chicago? Not obvious if it would show Indiana or Gary. What about check-in wait times (not just security). "Our guess"-- I assume it is from historical data, but it would be good to know the reasons behind this. Otherwise, seems pretty useful Go to the list menu and choose "Emergency Medical" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. Again, compass direction would be helpful ("3.2 miles away", but where?). Seems odd because if you're in an ambulance, you're not concerned about wait time-- you just go. Review of the app:

After opening the app, review the first ("Transit departures") page. from the location of the ipad there are 8 busses 7 metra from this location and saying how many minutes it takes for them to get there. next to the wait time thought was the arrival time but figured out it was for the next bus to arrive. Ones with no little numbers thinks theres not another one coming. Normal or rush hour trains or buses needs to say if they are normal or special ones that stop running... b.c there are more buses and trains at rush hour and less at other times - the app needs to include that info and theres a lot of space for info to make more clear. doesnt take the train a lot but finds information is needed for people. Travels on the green line sometimes and some cta bus on warren sometime and the tracker wasnt updated on those when she rode those normally. Needs to say last train or first rush hour train. Having issues touching the stars and doesnt know of have an idea what they are - pressed star and refreshed saw it came up first and sees that is what is preferred bus... its

34

Page 35: CUTGroup #8 - Waitbot Final Report

irrelevant for her and rather routes be in their fixed location. Sees they are red and green wait times and doesn't seem to like the map page - the buses and trains are not coded the same between the list and map page with the red, green, yellow pins - these need to be the same colors on both the list and map page and in the map page. Icons should be the same color for the trains like the CTA brown, green, red, orange etc... and buses need to be one color. Doesnt know why the minutes have green colors or red colors or why those colors are needed... causes confusion. Does this Transit Departures Page serve your needs?

No

Why or why not?

Showes where the stops are and when the next is coming but doesnt say enough on future time - this maybe good only if you are traveling

Go to the list menu and choose "Restaurants" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. List of few restaurants like 5 - clicked on the map page and didnt see any icons on the map ... took a few minutes to see just 3 and all have no report on wait times. Not sure what information the site wants to show - directed her to the arrow - she saw the information page and sees that its close by... confused by the no report and with the lack of number of restaurants why would the app show less than 1% of restaurants in the area. Not useful in a low population area or during a economic downturn but for a busy area it would be useful Will learning about a restaurant's wait time impact your future choices? Yes

Why or why not?

It would depend on schedule and how hungry and if had a tie to the reserservation system

Go to the list menu and choose "Airports" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. The checkpoint thing is not descriptive enough because when you go to the airport how do you know which line you're going to. Looking at list page - able to see how long it takes driving or by public transportation ... still doesn't know what main checkpoint means. There should be a variation of the checkpoints. Doesn't believe the times it would take between here and OHare. Maybe better to say terminal one checkpoint one two three instead of left right middle... needs to say which airlines (didn't

35

Page 36: CUTGroup #8 - Waitbot Final Report

notice at the top that's the information given in grey) Terminal and name of the airline is not enough and left middle and right is not good - use numbers and there say which airlines go through- theres enough room for information for each checkpoint. Go to the list menu and choose "Emergency Medical" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. The colors with the minutes are confusing - thinks that the colors connect with the CTA line that the hospital is on. Notices the distance and thats good but the minutes is travel time or wait time? confused by the colors and minutes. If there is a medical emergency and looking to go to a place with no wait time there is more to consider than just distance - like what about insurance. Doesnt think it is a complete list and should be more complete. Should have information like if it is a free hospital or be required to have insurance, or emergency room, etc... add a urgent care medical. Which page did you find most useful? Transit

Review of the app:

After opening the app, review the first ("Transit departures") page. It's pretty convenient; it lists all the buses that are close by. Although I can see how it could get confusing at times if you don't know where you're going; or it could get frustrating if you have a particular but you're looking for and you know which one it is, but all the other bus times are in the way. Does this Transit Departures Page serve your needs?

Yes

Why or why not?

It tells me the times that the closes buses are arriving.

I looked around for the different stops around the area, but I did notice that some of the stops are missing.

Go to the list menu and choose "Restaurants" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. I looked through the restaurants and a lot of the restaurants near my area were missing and the ones that were showing had "no report" so it was sort of a useless app... I didn't find the information very valuable because there really was none. Will learning about a restaurant's wait time impact your future choices? Yes

Why or why not?

because if I don't particularly feel like waiting I won't have to for that long if I choose a restaurant that doesn't have a long waiting time

Go to the list menu and choose "Airports" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. The zoom feature for all of these maps are pretty bad; they're not very smooth at all, very jerky, making the experience sort of annoying (using two fingers is okay but double tapping is not smooth). The app shut down on me while I was trying to figure out more information. Upon opening it back up; I didn't understand what T5 - Checkpoint 10 meant.. Go to the list menu and choose "Emergency Medical" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. There were a lot of colors and I didn't know what the colors were indicating because there was no key. When I clicked on the different ones, it told me different medical centers but it'd be more useful if it told us which ones were closest to us (not just listing a bunch of close medical centers). It also doesn't tell us anything more than just the phone number and address; it'd be a lot more helpful if we could access additional info about the medical centers here. Review of the app:

After opening the app, review the first ("Transit departures") page. Instead of me programming what busses/trains/Metra that are near me, it automatically pops up with the available information. I liked that, but think the information overload might turn me off in the future, the flipside, it is nice to know of all the route available to me. Sometimes I would forget a route or method is available/exists. Does this Transit Departures Page serve your needs?

51

Page 52: CUTGroup #8 - Waitbot Final Report

Are there any ways it can be improved? Have less, or at least condense the information. Instead of each new bit of information showing an icon, it can be lumped into one icon (of train, bus or Metra). Explore the site. What's the next thing you do? Clicked "Airports"

Tell us more about the first thing you did.

I clicked restaurants, was taken to a map (of where I was), but it couldn't quite locate me precisely. I clicked another tab, where it said "Sorry, no wait estimates time".

Go to the list menu and choose "Restaurants" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. I keep getting "Sorry, no wait estimates time". Will learning about a restaurant's wait time impact your future choices? No

Why or why not?

I see no restaurants. But I have Yelp and Foursquare to do that for me.

Go to the list menu and choose "Airports" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. It shows me the nearest airports and how long it will take to get there , either via car or public transportation. Also there is a neat (but unnecessary) security checkpoints option. The map pinpoints both of Chicago's major airports, with my location clearly defined. Go to the list menu and choose "Emergency Medical" and tell us about this experience. Take a look at both the list and map views. Once you click on emergency medical, the map blows up with all the medical options available near and wide. Instead of a city overview, and having me zoom in, it should show in the immediate 10 mile radius and have the option for me to zoom out. Which page did you find most useful? Transit

Any reason?

I have apps that tell me restaurants and whats nearby, and they do it better. I am not a fan of 3 in 1 things.

Which page did you find least useful? Emergency Medical

Any reason?

It was a tie with airports. I guess I don't see myself needing that infrmation in a hurry. If this is for Chicago only and you know the lay of the land, you know how many airports there are and roughly where they are. Same with ER's.

52

Waitbot wants to add wait times for other categories. What types of establishments would you want to see wait times for? I cant see a nail salon updating their app status, its just easier to go there or the very least, call. Click and explore the "Add wait" option and tell us about this experience. This option is for participating establishments. Seems easy to use. But if people are too lazy to update Facebook status', I can't imagine anyone bothering with this- no matter how easy it is. Would you want to add a wait time? No

Under what circumstances would you want to add a wait time? Or why wouldn't you want to add a wait time?

If I was a business, I wouldn't. It's all subjective. IN a restaurant, you give the max amount of time they would have to wait, not the least. There are different factors that change anyone's wait time. Having a all in one wait time is useless and probably a major deterrent for customers. (or a future source of frustration)

Would you want to share wait time information on social media? No

Why scare people off?

This is a yes and no. I want to use the transit portion for a bit, but all the other features are useless. But I see this to be a major battery suck and don't think I will keep it on my cell for long.

The Swiss army knife is useful and practical. Then the imposters "improved" on it, making it bigger and more cluttered with useless features. Sometimes I feel app creators want to entice a large crowd,
