5 Questions For Mark Kovich, Our New Executive VP

You’ve been working in the kitchen and bath industry for nearly 20 years. How did you get your start and what made you choose Canyon Creek?

My first job out of college was with Whirlpool Corporation. I spent a majority of my time working with dealers and builders understanding their role in the selling process and the importance of a great customer experience. I joined Canyon Creek because it has a great reputation with dealers and builders, produces a high quality product, and the employees demonstrate a can-do attitude.

What’s been your most memorable professional experience? Creating and leading a new business that has grown into one of the top ten largest cabinet brands in the US.

Details are an important part of your job. What are some special details that you feel really personalize a space? A mixture of color, materials, and textures to accentuate design and reflect the utilization of the space.

What is your proudest moment? Any time I spend with my children. I am proud of the adults they have become and how they contribute to society in their own special way.

If you could design the kitchen for any movie, which would you choose and why? “It’s Complicated” with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin. So much of the movie was filmed in the kitchen area (see image above). Very spacious but yet intimate and inviting. The ambiance of the space offers a variety of style options while also providing the functionality I would seek.

Operational Excellence Award

This year’s award program recognized a diverse sector of four manufacturers. The Operational Excellence award was given based on operational improvements that lead to a healthy, rewarding and successful workplace.

Over the last five years, we have implemented and upgraded to the latest equipment and production technology focused on standardizing and improving manufacturing production processes. This has eliminated redundancies and provided customers with consistent, dependable and quality products.

According to Robert Foote, Canyon Creek president & CEO, “Canyon Creek has an ongoing lean process improvement program and adopts efficiency strategies and sustainable manufacturing processes whenever possible. The small improvements that we continually make will lend themselves to a more efficient operation over time. But we’re also capable of making larger, step-change improvements, such as our new frameless production area which represents a dramatic improvement in capacity, quality and efficiency.”

Last week, Canyon Creek Cabinet Company received the Operational Excellence award from the Association of Washington Business Institute (AWBI) during its annual Manufacturing Summit.

Transform A Small Closet From A Burden To A BlessingNo matter where you live, most of us could use a lot more storage. Small closets can make organizing the worst! Here are some storage solutions to transform your closet from a burden to a blessing.

For extremely small closets adding another rod in the middle of the closet will give you double the hanging space. Built-ins and open shelves will also help with the clutter.

Hooks on extra wall space are perfect for hanging purses, belts, and other accessories that normally would end up on the floor.

Shelf dividers allow you to separate shirts, pants, jeans, etc. Not only does this keep your clothes from overflowing everywhere, but you will be able to easily find what you are looking for.

Closet organization is about maximizing your closet space to fit your needs. Our Closets Plus line offers many basics such as baskets, bins, drawers, and shelves in a variety of finish options.

Ways To Create An Ergonomic Kitchen

More drawers: Cabinets below the countertop with various drawer sizes are a lot easier to get into than having to crawl halfway inside a cupboard to reach whatever is in the very back. Being able to pull a drawer out makes it easier to extract and organize pots, pans and other cookware.

Pull-down shelves: Climbing on the countertop or retrieving a step stool to reach items in the very top cabinets can dangerous and a hassle. Since you can’t see into the very back you might even forget about items stored back there. Having pull-down shelves installed is a simple and convenient way to brings items down to your level.

Custom counter heights: If your family is particu-larly tall or short, the standard countertop height might not be for you. Having a customized counter-top height will keep you from reaching or stooping for various objects allowing you to prepare meals more comfortably.

Built-in microwave: A microwave above the range is a bit of a hazard. If you are cooking anything on the stovetop, you could burn yourself trying to use the microwave. You also risk spilling hot food on yourself when trying to get items out of the micro-wave. With custom cabinetry you can plan a space specifically for the appliance, giving you better access to safely heat up food.

There is a lot of talk lately about having an ergonomic office space, but have you thought about the ways to improve your kitchen space? Modifying your kitchen to reflect an ergonomic design will help minimize injury and devise a more efficient cooking environment. Here are four ways to obtain an ergonomic kitchen design.

Pumpkin Carving Tools It’s pumpkin carving time! Go beyond using the tiny carving knife that comes in carving kits. There are tons of tools hiding around the house to make this year’s jack-o’-lantern the best yet.

A power drill is a fast and efficient way to create small holes to form pictures or lettering on your pumpkin.

Petroleum jelly isn’t necessarily a tool to help you carve, but it will seal in moisture and slow down rotting. All you need to do is coat all cut surfaces of the pumpkin in petroleum jelly as soon as you finish carving.

It’s unlikely that cookie cutters will cut through a pumpkin. However, they do make for a great outline that can be followed up with a paring knife.
