Custer ConnectionsToday is February 14th aka Valentine's Day. You're all geared up for it, right? Fortunately, if youhaven't gotten something for that special someone, I'm sure one of our member businesses can helpyou out! Dawn even wrote a blog post this week that includes information from our members aboutspecials they have going on today through this weekend. If you're looking for inspiration, checkthere first!Dedicated to the memory of St. Valentine, this is the occasion when people all over the worldprofess love to their sweethearts and get them all the best gifts they can find. There are severalstories about who St. Valentine was: one dates to Roman times, another from the 17th century. Inboth cases the tradition can be traced to a priest who married young couples in secret. But thecustoms associated with the holiday and the ways of celebration differ from place to place andfrom nation to nation. Read on to find out how the Chamber staff celebrate this "special" holiday. Fred: I used to mail out a Happy Birthday card and handed out candy hearts - after class ofcourse - let the other teachers deal with the sweetened kiddies' sugar high. Now I just send out thebirthday card. (if this is totally confusing to you-ask Fred to explain!) Karen: The most special part of Valentine's Day for me is getting a hand-made card from mygrandson, and giving him, in return, a bunch of candy that his mom spends a lot of time doling outso he doesn't have it all for dinner! Dawn: I mailed some candy and some homemade gifts to all my kids. Hope they get them bytoday! Dolsee: I plan on eating ALL the Valentine's Day candy I can-with preference given to anythingheart shaped!

"The Strider Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, was formed in 2017. TheStrider Education Foundation believes that learning to ride can help everyone lead ahappier and healthier life. Through the development of a proven Learn-To-Ride curriculumand donations of the world's most advanced training bikes, the nonprofit organizationmakes riding available, safe, easy, and fun for everyone. All Kids Bike® is a national movement administered by the Strider Education Foundation. Our goal is simple: we want all kids to know how to ride a bike by the time they begin thefirst grade. To do this, we raise funds to provide Learn-To-Ride bikes, helmets, andintegrative curriculum at no cost to the school. Custer Chamber member Phil Lampert Broker/owner of Lampert Properties in Custer andbroker associate Andrea Ronning are personally sponsoring the costs associated withproviding Strider bikes for all of Custer kindergarten kids. When asked why they steppedup to get involved with Strider, Lampert said "we are longtime fans of Ryan McFarland andwe are extremely proud of him and his Strider accomplishments." "We are big believers in the outdoors," said Ronning. "As Realtors we sell the outdoors.Phil and I want to entice kids away from screen time to breathe the fresh air.""We believe in Ryan's mission," added Lampert. "We are honored to be involved." Funded programs in South Dakota currently include: Bison, Newell, Spearfish, Lead-Deadwood, Douglas, Hill City, Rapid City, Elk Mountain, Custer, Hot Springs, Edgemont,Hoven, and one school in Sioux Falls.
