1. OverviewResearch, alongside teaching and learning, is a core activity of Curtin Engineering Faculty. Over the last decade a rapid increase in R&D output has occurred. Most importantly, research is now being conducted by the vast majority of academic staff in the Faculty as will be evidenced below. This broad capacity is the hallmark of a mature university faculty: it underpins a unifying culture of scholarship and provides a research stability that is robust to internal or external changes. The Faculty’s research portfolio has been built to be sustainable. It incorporates a balanced range of discipline areas and utilises the right mix of expertise in theoretical, computational and experimental approaches. This ensures its long-term viability, potential to grow and ability to expand into emerging research areas.
Curtin Engineering Faculty comprises four Departments, namely Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. In January 2006, the Department of Computing left the Faculty. In order to provide a snapshot of the present Faculty’s research activity and outputs in 2005, this report covers the activities and outputs of its four constituent Departments and does not include those of the Department of Computing.
Research is conducted alongside teaching and learning. Accordingly, the achievements recorded in this report should be placed in the context of the teaching and learning conducted by the Faculty. In 2005, the Faculty had a teaching load of 1,675.5 engineering-cluster EFTSL (equivalent full-time teaching student load – the actual teaching conducted by the Faculty, thus excluding service teaching provided by other areas) and an EFTSU enrolment (equivalent full-time student unit – the actual number of students enrolled in the Faculty with part-time students included as fractional contributions) of 1,921.2. The total number of (equivalent full-time) academic staff employed on recurrent funding was 51.65. These data yield staff-to-student ratios (SSR’s) on taught load and enrolled load respectively as 1:32.4 and 1:37.2. (Note that when sessional teachers are included, the staff complement increases to 64.2 using the AVCC formula.)
The proportion of academic staff conducting research in 2005 can be gauged as follows. Of the EFT academic staff complement in 2005, 84% were research-active as measured by achievement in at least one of the following research indicators:
1. Research-paper publication in 2005
2. External research funding obtained in 2005
3. Research-student supervision conducted in 2005
The spread of research activity can be further profiled by noting that 25% of staff made achievements in all three of the above three indicators, 47% of staff achieved in two or more the above indicators and 84% of staff achieved in one or more of the above indicators.
The Faculty congratulates each and every one of the academic staff whose research activity contributes to the entries in this report. While the conduct of research can be personally satisfying, it does require very substantial effort, the application of expertise that has to be built up over many years, the maintenance of currency in a research area, and a singular form of dedication to the pursuit and attainment of new knowledge. The Faculty also recognises the contributions of staff whose names do not appear in the outputs listed in these pages because they have focused their endeavours in the support of the Faculty’s teaching programs; this too is a valid and essential contribution to the research effort of the Faculty. Finally, the Faculty also recognises and applauds the general staff – secretarial, administrative and technical – who so effectively support the core academic activities of Curtin Engineering Faculty.

3. Research and Development HighlightsThe following examples serve to provide a flavour of research activities conducted in Curtin Engineering Faculty during 2005:
1. Centre for Fuels and Energy’s research into the spontaneous combustion of pyritic shales, sponstaneous explosion of industrial explosives on contact with pyritic shales and acid rock drainage due to pyritic shales, funded by BHPBilliton Iron Ore Pty Ltd operating one of the world’s largest iron ore mines in the Pilbara basin, northern WA, has resulted in significant productivity improvement and cost savings, in the order of estimated $75M per annum. Within the first 4 years of a 10-year campaign since 2002, the suite of new, simple and elegant techniques were developed by the Centre, based on reaction engineering and transport phenomena principles, which have revolutionised the operation and waste management practice in the mining industry in a number of ways, signifying the importance of innovative R&D in a tranditional industry. The research is led by Professor Dong-ke Zhang, FTSE, who is a fellow of Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
2. An ARC-Discovery research project commenced that seeks to determine the causes of snoring and sleep apnoea using a mechanical-systems approach to understand the complex flow-structure interactions that occur in the upper airway. Researchers from the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (clinical measurements) and Optical and Biomedical Engineering Laboratory at UWA (instrumentation) are collaborators in the project. The project is led by Professor Tony Lucey.
3. Biofuel research led by Dr Hongwei Wu of the Department of Chemical Engineering has identified a Western Australian plant as being the source of the most energy efficient source in the increasingly important research area of sustainable fuels. The research is supported by an ARC-Discovery grant and WA State Government SEDO and Department of Conservation and Land Management project grant, both of which commenced in 2005. Dr Wu gave a number of invited presentations during the year, culminating in an invitation to give an address at the “Bioenergy and Biofuels in WA: Initiatives and Challenges” conference organised by the WA State Government for February 2006. Renewable energy and Biofuels are a priority research area for the WA State Government.
4. The 8th Australasian Heat and Mass Transfer Conference was organised and successfully held at Curtin. This conference is a premier international event for heat and mass transfer research community in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. The conference was organised under the auspices of the Australasian Fluid and Thermal Engineering Society (AFTES), in collaboration with Engineers Australia. The organising committee of the 8AHMTC consisted of staff from the Mechanical Engineering Department. About 45 national and international research papers were accepted after review, for oral presentation. Five international experts delivered keynote lectures.
5. A research project entitled “Elevated water temperature in Water Corporation’s water distribution network to remote localities in Western Australia” commenced. The Water Corporation provides water to remote country towns in Western Australia by transporting water through both below ground and above ground pipelines. Due to excessive periods of sunshine, solar-induced heating of water in the above ground pipelines takes place, which affects the aesthetic qualities of drinking water. A research and development study was initiated by Associate Professor Tilak Chandratilleke and Dr. Ramesh Narayanaswamy from the Mechanical Engineering Department, in collaboration with specialists at the Curtin Water Quality Research Centre and the Water Corporation. The study aims to devise a viable strategy for temperature mitigation of drinking water.
