FIRST READING—Wisdom 2:12, 17-20The wicked say: Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training. Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what will happen to him. For if the just one be the son of God, God will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes. With revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience. Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him.

RESPONSORIAL—Psalm 54:3-4, 5, 6 and 8Response: The Lord upholds my life.

O God, by your name save me, and by your might defend my cause.O God, hear my prayer; hearken to the words of my mouth. (R.)

For the haughty have risen up against me, the ruthless seek my life;they set not God before their eyes.(R.)

Behold, God is my helper; the Lord sustains my life.Freely will I offer you sacrifice; I will praise your name, O LORD, for its goodness. (R.)

SECOND READING—James 3:16—4:3Beloved:Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace.

Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? Is it not from your passions that make war within your members? You covet but do not possess. You kill and envy but you cannot obtain;you fight and wage war. You do not possess because you do not ask. You ask but do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

THE NICENE CREEDI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

GOSPEL— Mark 9:30-37

Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee,

but he did not wish anyone to know about it. He was teaching his disciples

and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they

will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise.”

But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him.

They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them,

“What were you arguing about on the way?”

But they remained silent.

They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest.

Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them,

“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”

Taking a child, he placed it in the their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to

them, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever

receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.”

A MESSAGE FROM FATHER MIKE

e know that prayer is powerful, but there are times when the scope of evil in the world can be so vast we can lose heart. The Church wisely gives us 40 days each year to repent and return to the Lord. We are blessed by its existence and by its limitedness. While we should always be repenting, always returning to the Lord, Lent focuses us.

Similarly, legal abortion in our nation is an evil that can overwhelm us. The 40 Days for Life campaign wisely chooses two 40 day periods a year to pray and fast to end abortion. September 22 begins the Fall Campaign.

I have been involved in the pro-life movement since my childhood and have seen the Lord work through this movement in profound ways. 40 Days for Life has been especially powerful and beautiful in its consistent, prayerful and peaceful manner of opposing the power of evil with the name of Jesus. Let’s keep it going!

The kickoff to this year’s campaign is this Tuesday, September 21. Join us at Epiphany Church (next to PPG Paints arena) for Mass at 7:00 PM followed by a candlelit Eucharistic procession to Planned Parenthood on Liberty Ave. Father Tim Deely will be preaching the Mass and he will certainly get our hearts ready for this 40 day holy campaign for life and light against death and darkness.

Please consider coming to the Mass and also participating in prayer over the course of the campaign.

hat are you passionate about? What stirs you and excites you, for good or for bad? This week, the Spirit speaks to us about our passions.

The Catechism defines passions as feelings or emotions that move us to action when we think something is good or bad (see CCC 1763). The anger I feel at a perceived injustice and the love I feel at seeing my wife and kids playing are both passions. Passions are neither good nor bad by themselves; they only take on a moral character by the actions I choose in response to them. That is where my reasoning comes in. I cannot always choose what feelings I feel and what attractions I have, but I can choose how I process those things, if I embrace them or put obstacles in their way, and what actions I ultimately take as a result of what I feel.

And that is what James is speaking to today. “Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice.” When I entertain those feelings and cultivate them, I should expect to bear the fruits of disorder and every foul practice. The Spirit even goes so far as to say that wars are a symptom of the spiritual battle raging within each of us.When I cannot keep my jealousy and anger in check, it can easily spill over into violence. Instead of this slavery to my strong feelings, the Spirit invites us to cultivate peace.

Passions can even reduce the effectiveness of our prayers. When we ask God to give us something to feed every whimsical craving that we feel, we essentially ask him to ignore our petition. Otherwise, we are asking God to chase our fleeting fancies that will never be satisfied, like a parent spoiling a child by giving them everything they think they want at the moment. As James said earlier in this letter, “every good and perfect gift is from above” (1:17), but the bad and imperfect gifts we sometimes crave and ask for will not be given from above.

So what then of our feelings? Is the Spirit asking us to repress our feelings and live by cold reason alone? No. If love is choosing to will the good of the beloved, an even better love is to feel joy about wanting good for another. Again, the Catechism says, “Moral perfection consists in man’s being moved to the good not by his will alone, but also by his sensitive appetite” [i.e. his feelings] (CCC 1770). The Lord wants us to feel good about wanting good. He does not want us simply to feel strong feelings and act on them without thought. He does not want us to be enslaved to our passions. Rather, he wants to help us cultivate the inner freedom to feel real peace, joy, and contentment. And he is passionate about it!

he March for Life in Washington D.C. provides an opportunity each year for thousands of pro-life Americans to been seen and heard in our nation’s Capital—to our federal legislators.

I have participated in the March many times and find solidarity with other like-minded people from across the United States.

There is strength in numbers, and the thousands who have participated each year since 1973 show an unwavering support for human life in our country.

I am excited to take part in the first-ever Pennsylvania March for Life and take this effort, along with fellow Pennsylvanians, to the steps of our State Capitol in Harrisburg in September.

The March will send an important message to our elected officials in Harrisburg and beyond that unborn life must be protected.

It will offer a unique opportunity to show public support for the sanctity of human life, closer to home and during a warmer time of the year!

I hope you will join us on September 27. Mark your calendar!

ou may be familiar with Amen to Action packing a million

meals on the day after Thanksgiving. It was an initiative started

by Bishop Zubik in the hope of creating an ecumenical event to serve

people in our diocese suffering from food insecurities.

COVID has made gathering the 4,000 people needed to put on the

event no longer possible. But there are more people who suffer from

food insecurities now than before the pandemic started in March 2020.

Last year, the Great Grouping put on a mini Amen to Action as a

pilot program for the main Amen to Action event. As a result of our

efforts, this year’s Amen to Action will happen on every Saturday in

November at ten different sites, strategically located throughout the

diocese at Catholic churches, North Catholic High School, and other

Christian denomination locations. The millionth meal will be packed on

the day after Thanksgiving at Sacred Heart Church in Shadyside.

With November right around the corner, your help is needed! Please

take part in one of the packing events around the city. To see where

the Amen to Action packing events are held and when, please visit

amentoaction.org and sign up to help pack one million meals in

November. Space is limited at each location to keep social distance

between packers, so sign up early to secure your spot. If you are

unable to attend an Amen to Action event, but would like to make a

donation, please visit amentoaction.org to make your tax deductible

donation online. Together, we can make a difference!

became an usher as Saints John & Paul was slowly

reopening from the COVID shutdown. Initially ushers served

as traffic cops directing the congregation to open pews

while maintaining social distance. It was encouraging to see

so many people attending Mass despite the restrictions and

the absence of Mass obligation.

Now, it’s great to see that smiling faces are once again

visible! As an usher, you have the opportunity to interact

with and provide fellowship to the fabulous future saints

that make our parish such a special place. No special skills

are required (or I certainly wouldn’t qualify!). Please consider

joining the Ministry of Ushers, I promise that you’ll find it to

be a rewarding experience.

eucharistic adorationAs Catholics, we believe that Christ becomes truly present within the Blessed Sacrament. As promised by Him, His Presence is abiding, not something that vanishes at the conclusion of Mass. During Eucharistic Adoration, we can sit silently in His Presence and open ourselves to His Graces. Adoration available at Our Lady of Peace, Monday-Thursday 8AM-8PM and at Saints John & Paul, Sunday-Friday 8AM-8PM.
