Our Mission Statement Says it Best:The mission of the Currituck Chamber of Commerce is to foster and develop a thriving and sustainable local economy in order to enhance our community’s quality of life. We define quality of life as:

In fulfilling this mission, the Chamber has a broad range of duties, yet our main priority is serving the business community and our members. First and foremost, we are the voice for business in the community. We can accomplish greater things if we work collectively as a group rather than as individuals.

The Voice for BusinessOur Board of Directors, staff and members know the wisdom of coordinating efforts under effective leadership for the advancement and development of the community and the free enterprise system. We are a Chamber of approximately 350 members, including businesses, individuals, nonprofit groups and associations, acting as one voice in the community.

Together we are a unified force, an umbrella of the industrial, commercial, civic and nonprofit interests for the purposes of concerted action. Together we are a strong voice. Our concentrated efforts support those activities, which are broader than any single business or industry, and promote the welfare of the community as a whole.

The Currituck Chamber not only unites the businesses and industry of the county, it also unites the county itself. Currituck County consists of three geographically diverse areas — the vacation resort of the Currituck Outer Banks, the primarily rural communities of the mainland, and isolated

Knotts Island. It’s a challenge to work for all our members, but we recognize the value of our diverse areas and seek to solidify the county as one.

The Currituck Chamber is a vital source of information for businesses, locals and newcomers as well. Currituck’s Outer Banks is a popular vacation destination that delights both the young and the young at heart with its unforgettable sunrises and sunsets, relaxing beaches, charming shops, fine dining and fun family activities. Known for its spectacular coastline and wide sandy beaches, the northernmost tip of the Outer Banks has much to offer vacationers as well as locals out for a day of fun. With its historic attractions, wildlife preserves, farm markets, vineyards, and festivals galore celebrating everything from wine and wildlife to wild horses and unique art, there is something for everyone.

Where the paved road ends, there are about twelve miles of beach accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicle. This area is home to the Corolla wild Spanish Mustangs and the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. Visitors are allowed to drive on this beach if they have a four-wheel drive vehicle. We recommend that visitors stop by the Visitor’s Center in Corolla to get a “Driving on the Beach” brochure for safety tips, rules and regulations.

Wild Spanish Mustangs of CorollaUntamed by time, the fascinating Corolla wild horses have roamed the beaches of the northern Outer Banks for more than 500 years. The approximately 101 horses in the herd now living on the Outer Banks are descendants of Spanish Mustangs. It is believed that they arrived on these beaches from 16th century shipwrecks. The North Carolina General Assembly recently named the Colonial Spanish Mustang the State Horse of North Carolina!

The non-profit, Corolla Wild Horse Fund (CWHF) currently manages the herd to help keep them healthy and protected. The herd is contained by two sound-to-sea fences, eleven miles apart that protect them from escaping their sanctuary. The fund operates an educational museum store and welcomes visitors year round. In the summer months, they offer horse-related children’s activities. The CWHF can be reached at 252-453-8002 or at corollawildhorses.com.


CURRITUCK OUTER BANKSThe Currituck Outer Banks is located in beautiful Northeast North Carolina. A short drive from several metropolitan areas on the eastern seaboard, Currituck boasts some of the best recreational activities and family oriented beaches in the country. Play golf, jog/bike on the greenway, kayak or enjoy an array of other action-packed adventure sports on water and land.

Corolla and Carova Twenty-four miles of pristine beaches await vacationers to Currituck’s Outer Banks. The first 12 miles of road from the county line north is paved road and is called Corolla. This scenic drive is lined with stately vacation homes, a first class hotel, a quaint inn and a variety of shops, restaurants and attractions. While in Corolla, try some of the local fare like the fresh local seafood, delicious North Carolina barbecue, or juicy steaks. If it’s unique gifts that you crave, you’re sure to discover many treasures in the many distinctive specialty shops. For our visitor’s convenience and safety, there are many public beach accesses located throughout Corolla including many with bath houses and manned seasonal lifeguard stations. The paved road ends just north of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.

The easiest and best way to see the horses and find them in their natural habitat is to take a horse tour. There are many Corolla-based tour companies with local guides who are familiar with the horses’ roaming patterns. If you go, please be aware that there are ordinances prohibiting the feeding, petting, and getting too close to the horses. Be sure to stay at least 50 feet away.

Currituck Beach LighthouseThe Currituck Beach Lighthouse stands majestically in Corolla. It is one of the only lighthouses in America that still houses its original first-order Fresnel lens. Visitors can climb the 214 steps to the top for spectacular views of Corolla Village, the Atlantic Ocean and the Currituck Sound. The lighthouse and museum shop are open daily from Easter through Thanksgiving (weather permitting). Call 252-453-8152 or visit their website: currituckbeachlight.com for further information.

Historic Corolla VillageIn the heart of Corolla, Historic Corolla Village is home to unique specialty shops, restaurants, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, historic Whalehead, the Corolla Schoolhouse and many other late 19th/early 20th century historic buildings.

Historic Corolla ParkThe Historic Corolla Park, located in Corolla adjacent to the village and on the shores of the Currituck Sound, encompasses nearly 40 acres of land and is the perfect place for outdoor activities such as kayaking, fishing, and crabbing. In addition, there is a historic footbridge, a covered pavilion for picnicking and a gazebo for viewing spectacular sunsets.

WhaleheadWhalehead, a favorite attraction of many history and Art Nouveau architecture buffs, is a 21,000-square foot, five-floored home that sits in the Historic Corolla Park and has been restored and renovated to its original grandeur that includes Tiffany lighting fixtures and a copper-shingled roof. Originally constructed in 1922, Whalehead was the second home of Edward C. Knight, Jr. and his wife, Marie Louise. It’s location on the Currituck Sound made it very appealing to this family of waterfowl hunting enthusiasts.

Outer Banks Center for Wildlife EducationVisitors to the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education can participate in interactive educational programs including decoy carving, a maritime forest walk, eco-kayaking, nature photography, bird watching and much more. This facility is dedicated to exploring coastal North Carolina’s wildlife, natural history and heritage. The Center, which opened in 2005, is the newest addition to Historic Corolla Park. MAINLAND CURRITUCK Highway 168/158 is the main thoroughfare to the Outer Banks. Plan to stop along the way. There are many one-of-a kind farm markets, casual restaurants, antique and thrift shops, winery and craft beer establishments. It is worth stopping by some of the locally owned shops and restaurants to discover the vast array of unique “treasures” they hold. If you’re hungry, eat where the locals eat. Try some fresh, local seafood, famous North Carolina barbecue, or a southern style hamburger cooked to perfection. Or stop by Sanctuary Vineyards for a taste of locally grown wine.

The mainland also boasts six golf courses and an array of attractions including the Currituck County Rural Center, Currituck County jail, Historic Courthouse, Historic Jarvisburg Colored School, and the Grave Digger Monster Truck.

H2OBX Water ParkNeed a break from the beach but still want to enjoy North Carolina’s lazy summer days? Head over the new water park located just over the bridge on the Currituck Mainland. Featuring more than 30 thrilling attractions, there is something for everyone. At H2OBX you will find a variety of rides, slides, a lazy river, splash zones and even private cabanas. H2OBX is open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day and has a daily attendance limit of 5,000. Tickets can be reserved online.

Currituck County Rural CenterJust off the beaten path, the Currituck County Rural Center (CCRC) offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor fun for the whole family or your entire group. Along with having a large indoor covered equestrian arena, 2 outdoor riding arenas and stables perfect for hosting events such as horse shows, rodeos, dog shows and the like, the CCRC is fast becoming a favorite family gathering place. The park grounds feature a private kayak and canoe canal access to the Currituck Sound and picnic areas where families can take a picnic lunch and spend the day kayaking, canoeing or fishing in the two stocked ponds. There are six outdoor shelters, walking trails, and a playground. You can bring the whole family including Fido as the grounds are dog friendly. The grounds are open 7 days a week, 8:00 am until sunset. The CCRC is also available for special event rentals and short-stay stable rentals at great rates! GolfPeople from all over the region and beyond are lured to the award-winning lush fairways, water views, reasonable rates and uncrowded conditions of Currituck County’s golf courses. Two of Currituck’s golf courses were named by Golf Week as the “Best Courses That You Can Play.” One of the mainland courses has twice hosted the North Carolina Open and another has been rated by the USGA as having some of the finest putting surfaces in the Eastern U.S. For a list of member golf courses, visit currituckchamber.org.

Grave DiggerFans of all ages will get excited about seeing the world-famous monster truck, Grave Digger and the four time champion driver, Dennis Anderson. The Digger’s Dungeon is a pit stop for thousands of visitors headed toward the Outer Banks. Located on the mainland, the Dungeon offers a wide variety of souvenirs, T-shirts and collectible items. The huge trucks, many with tires taller than 5 feet high, make for a great photo opportunity. Dennis Anderson is available for autographs and photos on selected dates. Races and other special events are held on site at Muddy Motor Sports Park just a few miles north of the Dungeon. While you’re there, grab a bite to eat at Digger’s Diner. Currituck Community CenterThe Currituck Community Center is conveniently located along U.S. 158. The center offers a little bit of something for everyone. It is the home of the Currituck YMCA, Senior Center and Cooperative Extension. Just a few steps away from these state of the art facilities are natural grass athletic fields and a brightly colored playground. The playground is an all inclusive playground with structures for toddlers, older children and handicap accessible play structures and swings. Don’t forget to check out the newest addition to the Currituck Community Center, the skate park with 7,000 square feet of concrete skate surface and the nearby climbing tower.

Hang GlidingAre you looking for an experience of a lifetime? Kitty Hawk Kites is the largest hang gliding school in the world and they are ready to take you for a ride. There are two locations on the Currituck Mainland, one is located at the Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg and the other at the Currituck Airport. Get your thrills taking a tandem ride high above the Currituck Sound and Outer Banks. No experience is necessary and some of the flight options are handicap accessible.

Dismal Swamp State ParkGeorge Washington would be amazed at the progress made since his first venture in taming the Dismal Swamp. Today, paths made by loggers are being used to provide a glimpse of the Dismal’s valuable secrets. The Dismal Swamp State Park offers interactive exhibits, half-mile boardwalk, 20 miles of trails and numerous Ranger led programs. Canoe/kayak rentals offer the chance to paddle the historic Dismal Swamp Canal. Birding, biking, hiking, paddling and photography are all great activities at the swamp! KNOTTS ISLANDKnotts Island’s geography makes it a truly unique destination. Plan to take the 45 minute ferry ride across the Currituck Sound and don’t forget the camera. You’ll find an outdoor mecca of bird-watching, hiking, biking, hunting, fishing and boating. A vineyard on the island can replenish thirsty travelers with fine wines while orchards provide treats such as fresh peaches, apples, jams and more.

Mackey Island National Wildlife RefugeWhile in Knotts Island, discover the natural beauty and wildlife of the Mackey Island National Wildlife Refuge located on over 8,000 acres of land. Established in 1960, the refuge is home to many endangered and threatened species including peregrine falcons and American bald eagles. Visitors can often spot Canadian geese, ducks, osprey raptors, wading birds and shore birds. Bird watching is very popular on the island along the Great Marsh Trail which provides a tranquil walk or cycling through a swamp-like habitat. Photographers can capture endless natural beauty from a number of exclusive vantage points throughout the island. Fishing and crabbing are permitted with the required permit. Many prime fishing spots are accessible only by hiking, bicycling or boat.

Students who apply and are accepted into this innovative high school have the opportunity to earn both a high school diploma and up to two years of transferable college credit (Core 44 or Associates Degree) at no cost to parents.

Earning transferrable college credit while in high school is not limited to students attending J. P. Knapp Early College High School. Currituck County High School students who maintain a GPA of 3.0 through the sophomore year are eligible for dual enrollment at The College of the Albemarle’s main campus or COA’s Currituck County Regional Aviation and Technical Training Center campus. Eligible students earn college credits while meeting high school graduation requirements through the North Carolina Career and College Promise Program. In addition, students who choose a more traditional high school experience at CCHS can take advantage of a wide variety of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs such as Agriculture Education, Business and Information Technology Education, Health Science, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Career Development, Marketing Education, Technology Education and Trade, Industrial Education, and Public Safety. Upon completion of a selected CTE pathway, students are eligible to earn credentials which can assist in obtaining entry level positions in the related workforce field immediately following graduation. STEAM (Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering, and Math) courses and activities continue to be a focus of instruction across the district. We are proud to work with our community members, as well as college and university partners to bring courses and opportunities associated with science, technology, engineering and math to our students.

During the 2016-17 school year, the Currituck County Board of Education began the final phase in the implementation of digital learning devices all of our K-12 classrooms. As part of this initiative, all students in grades 6-12 are provided a Chromebook laptop for use at school and at home. 3rd – 5th grade classrooms are provided access to class sets of Chromebooks, allowing students to participate in personalized learning activities enhanced by technology tools. In grades K-2, class sets of Kindle devices allow even our youngest students access to technology enhanced educational activities that bring their learning into the digital age.

The devices and technology based resources provide teachers with a tool to personalize and differentiate learning for students at all levels. Teachers deploy instructional practices that better engage students in higher level thinking, research, and real-life application projects providing the opportunity to utilize the 21st century skills needed to be successful in school and beyond. Higher EducationCurrituck County’s graduating seniors and other local residents have solid collegiate choices with nearby College of The Albemarle and Elizabeth City State University. The proximity of these higher learning institutions gives students the chance to attend college while staying close to home.The College of The Albemarle (COA), a community college with its main campus in Elizabeth City and satellite branches in Currituck, Manteo and Edenton, offers several types of associate’s degrees. Credits earned at COA toward the associate’s degree are transferable to other colleges and universities.

Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), located in the heart of nearby Elizabeth City, is a four-year university with programs in numerous areas of study. 5./ ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTFive Projects That Will Change the Way Currituck County Does Business

North Carolina continues to rank high among the best states in the nation for business climate and corporate tax rates. The state is also recognized as one of the most competitive for new business. Here in Currituck County, that momentum continues with several key projects in development that will help secure our region’s future success. INTERSTATE 87A new, $1 billion interstate highway will connect Norfolk and Raleigh and open a high-speed, unobstructed route between the Port of Virginia and North Carolina’s Research Triangle.The road, to be called Interstate 87, could take as long as two decades to complete. This freeway could open the distribution channels in the mid-Atlantic region like never before. I-87 will link the intellectual and healthcare industries of Raleigh (the fourth-fastest growing city in America according to Forbes) to the deepest port on the eastern seaboard, the Port of Virginia in Norfolk, and every business along the interstate stands to gain as a result.

I-87 will strengthen the ability of Currituck businesses to move goods from roads to sea, and vice versa. This highway connects two key centers of commerce in the southeast, literally paving the way for high speed and high volume transport of goods from our region’s businesses to consumers all over the world.

MEGA-SITE DEVELOPMENT In March of 2016, consultants presented a feasibility study for a 3,000-acre megasite in Currituck’s border community with Virginia. The initial report identified a strong potential market for a true mixed-use project featuring various housing, commercial, retail, office and industrial uses.

Phase II is underway and under contract, which includes outlines for new zoning areas, roads and utilities. Given the proximity to the vibrant Port of Virginia, a strong rail infrastructure, and access to major interstates, it is no wonder Currituck is considering this potential megasite. Mega-site developments can help turn underused land assets into vibrant economic centers for our region.

MID-CURRITUCK BRIDGEThe Mid-Currituck Bridge project would create a second crossing of the sound – north of the Wright Memorial Bridge – to help alleviate congestion and improve the flow of evacuation traffic in the event of a hurricane or severe storm.

It would also provide easier access between the Outer Banks and Virginia, as well as other communities in northeastern North Carolina.The 7-mile toll project includes a two-lane bridge that spans the Currituck Sound and connects the Currituck County mainland to the Outer Banks. It also includes a second two-lane bridge that spans Maple Swamp on the Currituck County mainland, connecting Aydlett to U.S. 158.

The dedication of state transportation funding has begun and the steps toward making the bridge a reality are in motion. As we get closer to the 2019 shovel-ready date and anticipate the first vehicles driving over it in 2025, let’s take a closer look at why this long-awaited project is an exciting development for Currituck County and our region:

Development opportunitiesDevelopment opportunities in our beachfront communities are limited due to cost, regulations and available space, whether there is a bridge or not. But the Mid-Currituck Bridge provides development opportunities on the mainland side of the span that are quite significant. As we remove traffic hassles, it is safe to say more people will be drawn to our region for recreational activities and vacations.

And when it rains in paradise, the bridge will enable vacationers to pop over to the mainland to find restaurants, shopping and entertainment venues at which to spend their money, rather than leaving the county to do so.

Convenience and safetyThe thought of being at work on the mainland, and having your toes in the sand 15 minutes later will be appealing to business owners and their employees. Further, as we know, when the dangerous weather hits the Outer Banks, residents need access to safe, efficient and unclogged evacuation routes — another major advantage the bridge provides.

CURRITUCK REGIONAL AIRPORT Currituck County is continuing to invest in capital projects that will expand Currituck County Regional Airport’s (KONX) capabilities to help meet increased aviation demand – and pursue economic development opportunities in the Mid-Atlantic defense and aerospace corridor.

In 2016, the Airport completed work on a $2.3 million Southern Parallel Taxiway project, greatly enhancing the safety and operational efficiency of our visiting corporate, business and leisure aircraft. In 2017-18, Currituck Regional Airport will begin planning and design of an additional $3 million in new ramp improvements, tie-down spaces and for-lease hangar buildings east of Runway 23.

FOREIGN TRADE ZONE 20 EXPANSIONIn 1975, the federal government established FTZ 20 in Norfolk, centered by the Port of Virginia. The zone service area includes the Viriginia counties of Accomack (partial), Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City, Mathews, Northampton, Southampton, Sussex, Surry and York; and includes the cities of Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and Williamsburg.

A proposal submitted by the Port Authority in May of 2016 sought to reorganize FTZ 20 and expand it by including eligible areas of the North Carolina counties of Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Hertford, Pasquotank and Perquimans; and the city of Elizabeth City.The U.S. Department of Commerce granted approval.“This is an incentive that can be used to attract business to the port and investment and jobs to locations within the FTZ,” said John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority (VPA). “The benefits of the FTZ can be significant and this decision opens the door in northeast North Carolina to those benefits. This gives companies that are considering an investment or expansion another reason to implement their decision.”

6./ Healthcare in Currituck

Quality Healthcare for Currituck CountyQuality healthcare is available to all of Currituck County’s residents and visitors through medical practices located throughout the county and the surrounding areas.

Three hospitals serve the county: Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City, Chesapeake General Hospital in Chesapeake, Virginia, and The Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head. Additional access to medical care is available in other cities of southeast Hampton Roads (Virginia) as well as Greenville, NC.

In addition to the services offered at the nearby hospitals, Sentara Albemarle Medical Center offers medical services on the Outer Banks through Sentara Kitty Hawk. The main branch, which also provides emergency care, is in Kitty Hawk. The Outer Banks Hospital offers an Urgent Care Center, located at The MarketPlace in Southern Shores (MP 1). On the northern end of the Currituck mainland there is Currituck Internal Medicine & Family Practice.

Albemarle Regional Health Services (ARHS), the regional public health agency, administers the county’s health department located in the Governmental Complex in Currituck, with health services offered to all county residents and visitors. ARHS has served Currituck County since 1995, ARHS provides Children’s Developmental Services Agency, Environmental Health Services, Clinical Services including Maternal, Child, and Women’s Preventive Health, Communicable Disease Services, Inter-County Public Transportation-ICPTA, Public Health Preparedness and Response, and Health Education as well as community health outreach programming.

Medical Services of America has recently acquired Albemarle Home Care. Albemarle Home Care has been providing nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and nurse aide services in the homes of Currituck County residents for over 40 years. Albemarle Hospice, since 1992, continues to provide hospice services in the homes and nursing homes through a team approach which include the patient/family, physicians, nurses,

nurse aides, social worker, chaplain and volunteers. Albemarle Home Care and Albemarle Hospice provide the highest quality of care and are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Home Care. The adult day health care center, DayBreak, is located in Elizabeth City, NC and welcomes residents of Currituck County to utilize this progressive alternative care to those needing 24-hour supervision or assistance due to frail medical conditions. Transportation to the Center and throughout Currituck is available through the ICPTA.

The Currituck House, located 1 mile South of the Virginia border in Moyock, is a new and modern 90-bed Assisted Living facility which also includes a secured 48-bed Memory Care unit. The facility is designed and staffed 24-hours a day to care for older adults who have physical or memory impairment and need assistance with personal care, medication administration and other life needs provided in a safe and secure environment.

Skilled nursing services and long-term care are provided to Currituck County at the Sentara Nursing Center in Barco, (252) 457-0500. The 100-bed facility has been serving the Currituck community since 1988. It offers 25 beds reserved for residents in need of skilled nursing care or therapy services, including physical, occupational and speech therapies. The facility has 75 beds designated for long-term care, for those residents who need assistance with activities of daily living. In addition to around-the-clock care, Sentara Nursing Center also offers outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy services at the Currituck Family YMCA.

TourismTourism plays a major role in the economy of Currituck County. The North Carolina Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development recently announced that domestic visitors to and within Currituck County spent over $144 million in 2014, an increase of 4.7% from 2013. Occupancy tax collections increased by 8% in the 2014-2015 fiscal year totaling $10,844,770 for the year (up from $10,046,807 in the 2013-2014 fiscal year). Currituck County collected $8,465,010 in sales tax during the 2014-2015 budget year, which represents a 5.3% increase over the 2013-2014 budget year. The tax relief benefit per household in 2014 was $503. This means that due to the tourism industry, each household in Currituck County saved $503 in taxes while the county maintained quality public services and a high quality of life. Visitor Centers Showcase Currituck Businesses:Currituck County’s visitor information centers - located in Corolla and in Moyock at the state line – provide vacation information and brochures about Currituck County businesses such as restaurants, shops, activities, and attractions. Trash and Recycling Convenience CentersEight manned convenience centers are located throughout Currituck County for residential solid waste collection and recycling. NO COMMERCIAL WASTE WILL BE ACCEPTED. Currituck County residents and property owners ONLY. Proof of residency required. Centers are open Monday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Centers are closed on New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Accepted: normal household waste, white goods, used oil, bulky items, auto tires 20” and less off the rim, lead acid batteries, brush, leaves, limbs, antifreeze and all recyclable materials.

Not accepted: commercial or industrial waste, liquid waste, hazardous waste, or tires larger than 20”. NO WASTE FROM OUTSIDE CURRITUCK COUNTY. If you are interested in curbside pickup, there are a few companies providing that service for a small monthly fee. Look in our membership directory under trash and recycling services for more information. The Currituck Outer Banks has door to door trash/recyclables. Collection is from Pine Island to Ocean Hill.

Charges vary depending on the location, size, and type of connection requested. All customers must apply in person for service and present photo identification. Renters must provide a copy of their lease and are required to pay a deposit.

Water service in the Currituck Outer Banks communities of Corolla Village, Whalehead Beach, Spindrift, Ocean Sands, Ocean Hill, Crown Point, Currituck Club, Buck Island, Monteray Shores, Corolla Light, Pine Island and the Villages of Ocean Hill is through private wells and the Southern Outer Banks Water System(SOBWS). Tap Fees are $6,000.00 with the exception of $2,450.00 in the Ocean Sand Water and Sewer District (Section D-Y) and $1,700.00 in the Villages at Ocean Hill (water and sewer).
