10/2007- present Assistant Professor (2007-2013), tenured Associate Professor (2013-2018), and Professor (2018-), The University of Hong Kong, Department of Civil Engineering (Hong Kong) Subjects taught: Solid waste engineering and management, environmental chemistry, water/wastewater treatment, engineering for sustainable development, and other environmental science and engineering courses. Research interests: Developing and exploring material properties for environmental applications. Examples include turning waste sludge into ceramic or aggregate materials, using incineration ashes as construction or industrial raw materials, developing anti-fouling membrane materials for wastewater treatment, designing novel catalysts for pollutants degradation in water and soils, revealing sorption/partition behavior of persistent pollutants on solid surfaces (sludge, sediments, soils, catalysts), utilizing thermal processes for waste stabilization/detoxification, and conducting crystallographic studies for novel materials in industrial and energy applications.

7/2012 – 7/2012 Visiting Academic. Imperial College London, Centre for Advanced Structural Ceramics (UK) One month visit to conduct collaborative research and experiments on the application of glass-ceramic composites in hazardous metal stabilization and nuclear waste immobilization.

7/2010 – 8/2010 Visiting Academic. University of California, Davis, Organized Research Unit: Nanomaterials in the Environment, Agriculture and Technology (USA) One month visit to conduct research collaboration on determining the thermodynamic properties of spinel solid solutions and their relationship to cation distribution and structural characteristics.

6/2008 – 7/2008 Visiting Academic. Nanyang Technological University, School of Materials Science and Engineering (Singapore) One month visit to conduct research collaboration on crystal structure refinement analysis via the powder X-ray diffraction technique and on its application in hazardous metal incorporation studies.

9/2005 – 9/2007 Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Stanford University, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (USA) Carried out research projects on the development of efficient and visible-light sensitive TiO2-based photocatalysts, using nanomaterial techniques, red-shift dopants, and various supporting materials. The purpose was to explore new environmental catalysts with strong photocatalytic properties and easy separation characteristics applicable in water/wastewater treatment. Laboratory work included nanomaterial characterization, catalyst synthesis, and treatment process design and testing.

9/2000 – 8/2005 Research Assistant. Stanford University, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (USA) Developed ceramic materials for hazardous metal stabilization, with studies on ceramic sintering processes, crystal structure characterization and phase quantification, and material leaching behavior in aqueous environments. Utilized instrumental techniques including AA, BET, ICPMS, QXRD, FESEM, HRTEM, XPS, and EXAFS.

9/1997 – 7/1999 Research Assistant. National Cheng Kung University, Department of Earth Sciences (Taiwan) Carried out National Science Council projects (No. 86-2116M-006-010 and No. 88-2116M-006-011) to identify the geological structure and hydrogeological characteristics of Pingtung Alluvial Plain. The project tasks included geological drilling, well-log analysis, sensor system installation, groundwater monitoring, aquifer mapping, groundwater quality analysis, paleofluminologic setting reconstruction, and numerical modeling of groundwater flow.

8/1995 – 1/1997 Research Assistant. National Cheng Kung University, Department of Earth Sciences (Taiwan) Carried out National Science Council project (No. 85-2111M-006-009) to evaluate interstrata seepage in Nanhau water reservoir. The project tasks included drilling in shallow rock layers, testing log samples, installation of monitoring wells, hydrogeological mapping, seepage monitoring, groundwater flow modeling, environmental impact assessment, and recommendations for reservoir operation and water resource management.

8/1994 – 7/1995 Teaching Assistant. National Cheng Kung University, Department of Earth Sciences (Taiwan) For undergraduate courses in Introduction of Geology (1st semester) and Mineralogy (2nd semester).

4/1994 – 7/1995 Research Assistant. National Cheng Kung University, Department of Earth Sciences (Taiwan) Carried out National Science Council project (No. 83-0202M-006-007) to characterize the hydrogeological properties (permeability, anisotropy, porosity, mineral phases, crystallinity, fracture patterns) of geomaterial samples collected from the strata within the proposed flooded area of Nanhua water reservoir.

Coordinator: Interdisciplinary and project-based course “CIVL2001: Engineering Design and Communication” (2008-present). Responsible for course administration and the design and hosting of a series of guest lecture sections.

Staff Tutor for Engineering Design and Communication Projects: Leading a group (~7 students) of Year-2 students to conduct a one-year project study on a specific civil and/or environmental theme as the main training component in “CIVL2001: Engineering Design and Communication” course (2008-2014). 

  Coordinator: Faculty “English in the Major” Pilot Teaching Plan, the University of Hong Kong (2007-2009).

  Instructor: Provided lectures and tutorials for the course of “Environmental Engineering” in the HKU Civil Engineering and Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) 2+2 program (2009 -2011).
