RESUMÉ

Claire Deacon is the Managing Member of OCCUMED cc and has practiced as an Occupational Health Practitioner [OHN] since 1982. Claire deacon and associates (cd&a) commenced in 2008, trading under OCCUMED cc. Currently an associate of Coalition Trading 517 cc (t/a Construction Research Education and Training Enterprises (CREATE)) with Professor John Smallwood [Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University [NMMU]] and Professor Theo Haupt, University of Mississippi. Claire obtained a General Nursing Diploma at Groote Schuur Hospital and qualified in Occupational Health at the University of Stellenbosch. She has completed various degrees: a B.Tech in Occupational Health at Peninsula Technikon; BSc Med [Honours] in Ergonomics at the University of Cape Town, and a Masters in Nursing [MCur] [by research] at the University of Port Elizabeth [UPE]. Claire was admitted to the prestigious Research Capacity Initiative [RCI] with the South African Netherlands Partnership for Alternative Development [SANPAD], which was completed February 2006 [cum laude]. She is currently registered for a PhD in Construction Management at NMMU.

Claire has served various societies, including the SA Society of Occupational Health Nurses [SASOHN] for many years. She is registered with the South African Nursing Council; is a member of the local Professional Society, the Chartered Institute of Building [CIOB]; and the Ergonomics Society of South Africa [ESSA]. She is a Director of the Section 21 organization that promotes professionalism in construction health and safety, ACHASM, and chairs the EC Chapter. Currently working on the task team with the Department of Labour to determine the need for Ergonomic Regulations.

Current work focuses on construction, particularly in the civil engineering field, throughout the Eastern Cape, on projects ranging in value from R500 thousand to R750 million.

Her present interests are research and development in Occupational Health and completing an elusive PhD, raising two growing boys and attempting to balance work and life. Many research papers have been presented and published nationally and internationally.

A workshop on the Compensation of Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act [COIDA] was held in Port Elizabeth in October 2000 for general Industry.

A series of workshops were conducted during 2001 for all the Woolworth’s’ Stores around South Africa.

A training programme was developed for Ford SA to assist with managing sick absenteeism as a line function. This programme assisted with the reduction of the Port Elizabeth absenteeism rate to below the national average within three months

Current ResearchErgonomics in Construction – ongoing research on effects of work and workers experience of pain

TrainingVarious training courses and workshops have been developed due to needs identified in industry. These include:
