STATEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES AND EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

My professional career has included various experiences, ranging from private veterinary practice; to clinical residency and graduate training; to service as a faculty member with responsibilities across teaching, clinical care, and research; to administrative appointments as a department chair, hospital director, and dean; research facility director; and to positions focused primarily in research. These experiences have instilled a strong belief in the tripartite mission of public universities and the need to achieve synergy across our missions.

After graduation from the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1973, I spent three years in private veterinary practice in Ohio and Texas, followed by six years in residency (separate neurology and pathology) and graduate (Masters and PhD) training at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Upon completion of my training at Georgia, I moved to the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University where I served on the faculty for 11 years before moving to the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri. At Missouri, I principally served as an administrator, first as a department chair and hospital director and later as dean. I was a faculty member in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Medicine from 2006 to 2012, when I accepted joint appointments in the Departments of Veterinary Integrative Biosciences and Veterinary Pathobiology and the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience program at Texas A&M. Both the UNC and Texas A&M appointments principally involved research on a canine model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. I served as Director of the Texas A&M Institute for Preclinical Studies (TIPS) from 2014-2016. The TIPS facility conducts preclinical studies, principally in large animal (dogs, pigs, sheep, calves) models, for biomedical device and drug development. Many of these studies are done on a contract basis with commercial companies and some are done utilizing good laboratory practices (GLP). I retired from Texas A&M June 1, 2019.

Teaching. As an educator, I have emphasized active learning, frequently incorporating case discussions into both didactic and laboratory sessions. Because of my dual training in clinical neurology/neurosurgery and neuropathology, I have tended to emphasize clinicopathologic correlation. My instructional career began at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine during my residency training. I interacted with veterinary students as they rotated

Page 72: CURRICULUM VITAE Joe N. Kornegay, DVM, PhD · Curriculum Vitae Joe N. Kornegay, DVM, PhD Page 2 Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center Investigator 1994-2006 Doctoral Faculty 2004-2006

through clinical blocks in neurology and pathology. This principally entailed small group (rounds) discussions. Similarly, in my initial faculty appointment at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, I interacted with veterinary students on the neurology clinical rotation. At North Carolina State, I also taught in a range of both professional (DVM curriculum) and graduate didactic neurosciences courses, with emphasis on clinical neurology/neurosurgery and neuropathology. At both UNC-Chapel Hill and Texas A&M, I have been involved primarily in graduate education and courses.

Clinical Service. Through my three years in private clinical practice, I gained an appreciation for the key role that veterinarians play in primary care. Upon entering my residency training and later as a faculty member, I was an academic clinician, working with referring veterinarians and owners of animals with spontaneous neurologic diseases. I have training in both medical neurology and neurosurgery, so my practice entailed medical and surgical management. Most cases in my practice were seen on a referral basis, in general from a private practicing veterinarian but occasionally from other specialists in either private or academic practices. I have also consulted with anatomic pathologists on animals with neuropathologic or muscle lesions. My career as an academic clinician occurred in parallel with the emergence of trans-sectional imaging (computed tomography [CT] and magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]). I was involved in the early utilization of these techniques in spontaneous neurologic diseases and have continued to use imaging as an endpoint in my research on muscular dystrophy.

Research. I have conducted research on both experimental and spontaneous neurologic lesions/diseases. My Masters of Science degree dealt with the role of somatosensory evoked potentials in assessing the functional integrity of the spinal cord in dogs following experimental transection. Subsequently, I completed a PhD degree in which the dissertation focused on the pathogenesis of an avian condition termed transient paralysis. Susceptibility to this disease is linked to the avian major histocompatibility complex and occurs in certain in-bred lines of chickens after either spontaneous or experimental infection with the Marek’s disease herpesvirus. Aspects of disease pathogenesis are analogous to experimental allergic encephalitis and multiple sclerosis. My studies defined the role that brain edema plays in the onset and, with resolution of the edema, reversal of the clinical signs of transient paralysis. For the past 35 years, I have studied a spontaneous canine disease termed golden retriever muscular dystrophy (GRMD), which serves as an animal model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) of humans. Both conditions are X-linked, occurring due to mutations in the DMD gene, which codes for the protein dystrophin. Our research has defined key clinical and pathologic features of GRMD to both better understand disease pathogenesis and to also utilize these parameters in assessing treatment efficacy. In recent years, we have studied various treatments (cell, molecular, and pharmacologic approaches) in affected dogs. Results of these preclinical studies should guide use of similar treatment strategies in DMD patients. This has come to fruition, as GRMD studies on the use of AAV-micro-dystrophin gene constructs have led to human DMD clinical trials. Our studies have been supported principally by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
