1998, April One of 24 invited participants (4 from Canada) in a concept conference called “Mathematical Cognition: From Numerical Thinking to Mathematics Education” sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH); held in Bethesda, MD. The goal of the conference was to “…provide a cohesive framework for a programmatic funding initiative that will support basic research in the cognitive science of mathematical thinking...”

1994 - 1995 Visiting Scientist, Medical Research Council Applied Psychology Unit, Cambridge, England

CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS My research interests include (a) mathematical cognition; specifically, individual and developmental differences in basic arithmetic processes and the role of working memory in mental arithmetic; (b) the development of early literacy and numeracy, with a focus on the role of parental involvement in children's acquisition of reading and mathematics; and (c) cognitive aspects of how situation awareness and workload influence performance in complex real-world tasks such as aviation, driving, and reading in hypertext.
