<Research Grants (Since 2011)>
1) Research and Social Implementation of Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction as
Climate Change Adaptation in Shrinking Societies (FY2016-2021): The occurrence of natural
disasters has been increasing—partly due to contemporary climate change—and adaptation to
disaster risks is important for local communities. At the same time, many communities are
experiencing shrinking populations. The ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR) takes
advantage of the multi-functionality of ecosystems, including their capacity to mitigate disasters
while providing multiple ecosystem services. Population decline provides ample opportunity for
implementing Eco-DRR. Project research will develop practical solutions for implementation of
Eco-DRR in local communities by visualizing natural disaster risks, evaluating multi-functionality of
Eco-DRR, conducting scenario analysis, examining traditional and local knowledge of Eco-DRR,
and collaborating with insurance and other sectors. Lead researcher in charge of ecosystem
scenarios analysis.
2) Predicting and Assessing Natural Capital and Ecosystem Services (PANCES) (FY2016-2020): The
Environment Research and Technology Development Fund, Strategic R&D Category, Ministry of the
Environment, Japan . PANCES predicts and assesses future natural capital and ecosystem services
(nature's benefits to people) and their natural and social-economic values by building an integrated
model of social -ecological systems. Through the presentation of several scenarios, we aim to
demonstrate the ideal form of a society in harmony with nature. PANCES is a large project where 30
research institutes and more than 100 researchers in Japan are working together with their full-scale
efforts. Lead researcher in charge of sub-theme 1-2 which develops population and land use models for
ecosystem scenarios analysis.
3) Building a sustainable society through the integration between food sharing, low-carbon and
resource efficient food supply system (FY2015-2017). This project is funded by Japan Society for the
Promotion of Science (JSPS) as a project of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI). This
project investigates traditional food sharing subsystem in Japan, and explores a new form of sustainable
food supply system with low-carbon and resource efficient technologies. Lead researcher.
4) Food Security Impacts of Industrial Crop Expansion in Sub-Sahara Africa (FICESSA) (FY2015-
2017): Funded by Belmont Forum, FICESSA is a 3-year interdisciplinary project that aims to provide
clear empirical evidence of how industrial crops compete for land with food crops in Sub-Saharan
Africa, and the mechanisms through which this competition can affect food security, whether in a
positive or a negative way. We will undertake studies at multiple spatial scales using various analytical
tools to study past dynamics and explore future scenarios. FICESSA includes case studies in Ghana,
9
Malawi, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Swaziland. Lead researcher of Work Package #6.
5) Biodiversity and Ecosystem Scenarios Network (ScenNET) is funded by Belmont Forum (FY2015-
2016). This collaborative research project aims to strengthen national and international ties between
researchers working on future scenarios of biodiversity and ecosystem services. ScenNet focuses on
networking and capacity building in all eight countries participating in this network through i)
international workshops, ii) development of national networks, iii) a large international conference on
biodiversity and ecosystem service scenarios to be held in 2016, and iv) a web-based networking tool.
Principal Investigator in Japan.
6) Future scenarios and governance of social-ecological systems in Asia-Pacific region through
enhancing synergy between indigenous and local knowledge and scientific knowledge (ES-
Scenario) funded by JST (FY2015). Principal Investigator.
7) Ecosystem Service Synergy and Tradeoffs Analysis (FY2013-2015). This project analyzes the local
governance of ecosystem services, focusing on satoyama landscapes (Japanese landscape models which
emphasize interdependence between humans and nature) and traditional local knowledge in the Noto
peninsula, Japan. The project runs in collaboration with Kyoto University and Kanazawa University
and with funding from the Ministry of the Environment of Japan. Principal Investigator.
8) IPBES Assessments and Capacity Building (FY2011-2016). The Intergovernmental Science-Policy
Platform on Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity (IPBES) was established in 2012 to contribute to
science-policy interface for biodiversity related multinational environmental conventions. IPBES
provides four key functions: (i) scientific assessment, (ii) capacity building, (iii) knowledge generation
and (iv) policy support. Since 2011, UNU-IAS has been leading development of the IPBES assessment
process by organizing informal and formal international scientific expert workshops, in collaboration
with UNESCO, UNEP, and the Ministry of Environment, Japan. Lead researcher.
9) Strategy to Enhance Resilience to Climate and Ecosystem Changes Utilizing Traditional Bio-
production Systems in Rural Asia (CECAR-Asia) (Ministry of Environment, Japan (MoEJ),
FY2011-2013): How to enhance resilience of rural community against climate and ecosystem
changes in Vietnam, Indonesia and Sri Lanka – traditional home garden and irrigation systems.
Research collaborator.
10) Enhancing Resilience to Climate and Ecosystem Changes in Semi-Arid Africa: An Integrated
Approach (CECAR-Africa) (FY2011-2016) is one of the elements of the Science and Technology
Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS), a collaborative programme of the
Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The project explores an integrated strategy to enhance resilience of rural community against
climate and ecosystem changes in northern Ghana. Research leader of Theme 3.
11) Biodiversity and Ecosystem Assessment in Asia-Pacific Region (Asia Pacific Network for Global
Research (APN), 2013-2014): Organizing a workshop in Korea to discuss how to conduct regional
ecosystem assessment under IPBES conceptual framework. Research collaborator.
12) Island Industrial Ecology in Japan (Sumitomo Foundation, 2012-2014): Island model of
sustainable production and consumption - Case studies of two remote islands) in Japan. Research
collaborator.
13) Island Industrial Ecology and Sustainability (Center for Global Partnership, Japan Foundation,
2010-2011): The purpose of this workshop is to bring together the leading experts now conducting
research on island sustainability and industrial ecology. Principal Investigator in Japan.
