AboutKateSwaffer:Katehasbeentherecipientofmanyawardsforherworkindementiaanddisabilityrights,andwasthe2017SAAustralianOfTheYear.ShereceivedtheUniversityofWollongong’sAlumniSocial ImpactAwardforherglobalwork indementia in2016,andwasamongsttheWestpac/FinancialReview100Womenof Influenceannouncedfor2016.Amongstanumberofotherprestigiousawards,shewasalsotheInauguralwinneroftheStirlingUniversityInternationalDementiaLeaderin2015,andwinner as an Emerging Leader in DisAbility Awareness in theNational Australian DisAbility Awards in2015.ShewasalsoinvitedtogivetheAAGSirKeithWilsonOrationinJune2017.Kate is the only Australian to be a full member of theWorld Dementia Council, a boardmember ofAlzheimer’s Disease International, and she is the Chair, CEO and co-founder of theDementia AllianceInternational,aglobaladvocacyandsupportgroupforpeoplelivingwithdementia.KateisacurrentPhDstudent (currently on a leave of absence), an Honorary Associate Fellowwith the Faculty of Science,Medicine and Health, University ofWollongong, a Fellow of the RSA, and an International Fellow atCanterbury Christ Church University. She completed a Masters of Science in Dementia Care with aDistinctionin2014.Sheisalsoaretiredchefhavingrunherownhospitalitybusinessesfortenyears,andbeforethatworkedasnurseworkedindementiaandagedcareandthenoperatingtheatres.Notably,inherhumanrightswork,sheisthefirstpersonlivingwithadiagnosisofdementiatogivenainvitedkeynotepresentationattheWorldHealthOrganisation(WHO)attheFirstMinisterialConferenceonDementiainMarch2015,whereshedemandedhumanrights,accesstotheConventionontheRightsofPersonswithDisabilities(CRPD)forallpeoplewithdementia,andabalanceinresearchbetweencareandcureontheglobalstage.ThesedemandswereincludedintheWHOFinalCallToAction,andhumanrightswere included in theGlobalActionPlan forDementiaadoptedat theWorldHealthAssembly inMay2017.Kate is an influential humanitarian andactivist for human rights for agedanddementia care. Shehasalways stood up for social justice as an advocate or in volunteering roles, and still volunteers for thehomelessinSouthAustralia,andtheBereavedThroughSuicideSupportGroup(SA)Incorporated.She is also awidelypublishedacademic, author andpoet.Her firstbookondementia,WhatTheHellHappened to My Brain?: Living Beyond Dementia, and her second dementia book Diagnosed withAlzheimer’soranotherdementia,co-authoredwithAssociateProfessorLee-FayLowwerebothreleasedin 2016, the latter currently being updated for an international audience. Her first two volumes ofpoetrywerepublished in2012and2016, andher third volume is currently inpress. She continues towriteandpublishacademicarticles,booksandbookchaptersregularly.Since2010,KateSwafferhasbeenactivelyworkingwithafocusonhumanrightsandaccesstotheCRPDforpeoplewithdementia,andhasgivenmorethan800invitedkeynotepresentationsonanumberoftopics,notonlyinthefieldofdementiaandhumanrights,butondisAbility,discrimination,stigma,thelived experience of dementia, dementia-enabling design principles, language, Dementia FriendlyCommunities, Prescribed Disengagement®, Models of care, Information Technology, Advocacy andActivism, dementia policy (local, national and global) and loss and grief. There has been a distincttransformationinherworkfromadvocacytoactivism,inAustraliaandontheglobalstageforallpeoplewith disAbilities, and specifically disAbilities caused by a diagnosis of a dementia. Kate also activelysupportstheDignityPartyinSouthAustralia,heronlypoliticalaffiliation.
